Baby names

I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

Love indigo and like juniper although would get shortened to June which reminds me of the 60s for some reason. Clementine is a small orange and i liked luna!

You may not want to read the book OP as it's about child abuse. The child in the story is called Ottilie and the tiger is to do with the abuse.

OP, Indigo is what people who haven't realised it's Inigo without the 'd' accidentally call their DC.

IndiGo is India's largest passenger airline with a market share of 47% as of August, 2019. Prepared to be accused of cultural appropriation.

Juniper is favourite, also like Mollie/Molly although prefer Peggy for Margaret not keen on Maggie... not keen on Otilie never sure pronunciation...
Like Cleo less keen on clementine.

I know of two Indigos (Indies), both young female teens. I thought it was unusual at first, but no different to Violet really?

Lots of people with no imagination on this thread. I am guessing that's why there's 15 girls called Emily, dozens called Isabelle and easily a million called Imogen in our school Grin

I really love Ottilie. I am a teacher and have taught an Ottilie and several girls called Clementine, Maggie and Molly/ie.

The only one I am really not keen on is Sunny.

Everything else is lovely, especially Juniper.

Another favourite on my list was Laurel.

@KindnessCrusader just because people have picked more traditional names for their children doesn't mean that they are unimaginative people.

I think they are all fine tbh

Ottilie, Clementine, Clover, Maggie, Mollie, Indigo, Juniper

Maggie and Mollie are more nn than actual names in my world view, both fine as that but I would give them a more formal name to use if they wanted.

I think all the others are nice particularly Clover and Juniper.

Or of being the sort of person that names a child after a brand name

What about
Joanie/Joni
Sadie
Tess
Nell

the only one I like is clementine.
that is a proper name, and can be shortened/ adapted as/ if she wishes.
the others, I can see why people would say cruel. I think they may hamper her chances in any serious job. not everyone will be or move in arty circles. I think parents should try to avoid causing their children the burden of embarrassment, explanation, apology re their name,
this could set them on a path of being apologetic, unconfident.
why did you name the other one after a clown ?

The Tilly Tiger idea is dreadful. Sorry.

Clementine is nice. Sort of orangey.
The others are ok.

My DD’s name is on your list Grin

I know an Indy and it really suits her, hers is short for Indiana, I also like Ottilie and Clementine

Sunny and Annie are too matchy matchy.

Clementine is lovely (as long as there is no chance whatsoever of her having red hair; one of my DDs who is not called Clementine dodged that bullet very narrowly).

Mollie is lovely, and sounds nice with Annie.
Ditto Maggie.

I honestly don't get the name Ottilie at all.
If you want to use Tilly or Tillie as a NN, would you consider Matilda?

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)

Clover - bovine.
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie) - so call her June? Juniper sounds like a comic book hillbilly name of yore, 'Jumpin' Juniper'..
Indigo (we love the nn Indie) - I would use India rather than Indigo. Indigo makes me think of the word Indigestion.

Sorry - erased my thoughts on Tiger - I think it's gorgeous. Maybe not with Tilly, but Clementine Tiger would be very nice indeed.

I'm no help. But after reading Sunny Clementine, i can't get "my funny valentine" out of my head.

Annie and Ottilie/Tilly go well together as sisters' names.

Middle names don't matter - how often do you say/use yours?

Report
Pulpfiction1 · 25/01/2020 05:47

They sound like cat names

bluemoon2468 · 25/01/2020 05:58

You don't need to give your daughter the middle name Tiger in order to use it as a nickname 😕 you could have a daughter called Tilly and still call her that... I know a little girl whose nickname is Shadow, but that's not her actual name. Middle names don't really matter in the greater scheme of things, but bear in mind that it might be a bit of an embarrassment as a teenager, if/when it's read out in her wedding vows etc. etc.

Just call your dd what you want.Kids will always find something to tease over.

As do adults. You only have to look at the threads called "funny names you've come across" to know that.

It's shit growing up with a "funny name"

Clementine (Clemmie) is a lovely name. It was Winston Churchill's wife's name I think.

With Ottillie is the stress on the O as in O-tillie or is it like Otter-ly?

I also like Molly and Maggie (Thatcher? - showing my age!)

I ADORE Ottilie and Clementine - please pick one of those @MousematsRule - it would make me happy 😆
