I've been told name choices are unkind to DD on the way

We are expecting a sister for our DD Annie Coco.
We've had a little opposition to our favourite names for this one, but then none of my close relatives liked DD's name either but it gets a lot of compliments now and suits her down to the ground.

Would love thoughts on our current shortlist...

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?)
Clementine
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this)
Clover
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie)
Indigo (we love the nn Indie)
Mollie
Maggie

Have the confidence to Choose the name you like and stop telling people before the birth fgs

Close family ask and it seems a bit petty to refuse to discuss it. Plus, this is a forum designed to discuss ideas before the birth fgs

What you need to do it sit and think about your names and think how they will sound when your child is an adult.

CodenameVillanelle · 24/01/2020 22:54

Ottilie (Would love to name her Ottilie Tiger and her pet name would be Tilly Tiger but I've been told this is cruel?) - so, so bad. Ottilie is a bit trendy but with flippin Tiger as a mn? No
Clementine - lovely
Sunny (would want to use Clementine as middle name for this) - boys name
Clover - nice
Juniper (we just love the nn Junie) - nice
Indigo (we love the nn Indie) - too masculine
Mollie - spell Molly
Maggie - harsh and old fashioned

MousematsRule · 24/01/2020 22:57

OK so Ottilie Tiger can be safely ruled out! I would call her Tilly Tiger myself at home though! It was oy ever meant as a pet name anyway.

Had no idea Sunny Clementine was a cocktail so we can cross that one off.

I think our shortlisted shortlist probably looks like
Ottilie, Clementine, Clover, Maggie, Mollie, Indigo, Juniper

Middle names being thought

Thanks for the feedback whether it was kind, constructive or brutal! Grin

I have a weird name and like it but would have hated my parents for lumbering me with Sunny/Clementine/Tiger. The rest are great.

Pepperama · 24/01/2020 22:59

I honestly wouldn't want to introduce myself to new colleagues with most of these names. Just imagine.... Hello, I'm the new accounts manager, Clover Miller or hi, I'm the new junior doctor, Juniper Smith.

BellaVida · 24/01/2020 23:00

Ottilie is a lovely name but Tilly Tiger is about too out there- just a bit twee and cartoon like.

What about something more similar to Coco for a middle name?

  • Ottilie Carmen
  • Ottilie Lola
  • Ottilie Fleur
  • Ottilie Amber
TigerOnATrain · 24/01/2020 23:00

@MousematsRule Listen to your family. Mollie is the only decent name for a baby girl out of all those names.

Sorry, but to an extent, other peoples opinions ARE relevant when naming your baby. And they always WILL be.

AND... Your child will never forgive you if you give her a daft/ludicrous name.

I know 3 or 4 young people (under 27) who were given daft names by their parents, and they ALL use a different name. One young woman (aged 28,) is called 'Fragrance Glitter.' I shit U not.

She started calling herself Lizzie, (after her grandmother,) when she started secondary school. Hasn't been known by her Godawful given name since she was 11.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 24/01/2020 23:01

Lovely names.

Someone will always find a reason to disparage your names, I wouldn't pay too much attention.

Serin · 24/01/2020 23:02

Ottilie is lovely.
All the Sunny's I have met are Muslim boys.
Clementine, sorry, I think it's awful.
Maggie great
India fine
Juniper and Clover are cat names.

lilgreen · 24/01/2020 23:02

No cruelty that I can see. Nice names.

MitziK · 24/01/2020 23:03

Sunny? Sounds just like Sonny Boy.

Indigo. Possibly suitable if you live in a yurt and sage smudge your babies to prevent Diptheria and Measles. She'll just as likely change her name to something like Elizabeth or Sheila just to piss you off, though.

If you like Tilly, you could go for Matilda and only have 2 of them in each class, rather than be one of the 5 - 8 Ottilies.

Tiger is likely to be changed into Tigger or Tiggy. Not bad if you're planning on her becoming a Nanny to the Royal Family, I suppose. Or a hedgehog.

Clover is a brand of margarine. so she could be called Marge.

Margaret/Marguerite/a gets you that as well, along with Mags, Maggie, Moggie, Meg, Peg and Madge.

Clementine. Calling the register in a couple of years is going to sound like a shopping list.

Juniper. Yeah, more shopping - it's the essential ingredient in gin. If she's due in five months, you might just slip into being able to call her Junie without people saying 'but she was born in April/May'. But she'll be constantly saying 'No, not Julie. Ju-nee'.

Mollie. Fine. I always liked Millie Molly Mandy books when I was little. Even though even that kid had the full name Millicent Margaret Amanda.

lilgreen · 24/01/2020 23:03

Love Clem.

somm · 24/01/2020 23:03

As someone who's never gone by their first name (which is a very plain, simple one, going back hundreds of years in UK) I'd say it doesn't really matter what you call your child, if it's a name you like. The child can go on to call themselves whatever they like. But 'Sunny Clementine' makes me think of the juice I get in Tesco. 'Ottilie' is a name I've never heard of (not that that's a bad thing) and 'Tilly Tiger' - if that's your choice just go with it. When I'm addressed by my 'official' name I have to take a moment to think 'Oh yes, that's me'. I'm sure Sunny Clementine, Ottilie and Tilly Tiger would know straightaway that they were the ones being called into the GP's or dentist's surgery.

lilgreen · 24/01/2020 23:04

Ottilie is very very posh. Lots at Oxford uni I hear.

lilgreen · 24/01/2020 23:05

Tiger is not really a child’s name IMO.

SoupDragon · 24/01/2020 23:07

I think our shortlisted shortlist probably looks like
Ottilie, Clementine, Clover, Maggie, Mollie, Indigo, Juniper

To me Clover is a cow's name and I can't get past the orange for Clementine.

SoupDragon · 24/01/2020 23:07

Or the song for Clementine.

Ginfordinner · 24/01/2020 23:08

As a gin drinker I'm a bit Hmm about the name Juniper.

FlashesOfRage · 24/01/2020 23:09

All the “Sunny’s” I’ve taught were Muslim boys.

You have to imagine your child as an adult. Maybe as a politician, a lawyer, a teacher, a policewoman, a grown up professional... then decide if the name you are giving them will make other people judge them unfairly or take them less seriously before they even meet.

Luzina · 24/01/2020 23:09

I've only met boys called Indigo.
I have however met 3 girls called Indie (all under 10)
I like Clementine and Maggie
Clover reminds me of the margarine
Molly is ok, not particularly interesting imo

How about Violet?

steppemum · 24/01/2020 23:12

OK, Tiger is awful as a 'real' name, perfectly lovely to use as a nickname at any point. (veyr cute for a little girl to be Tillie Tiger as a pet name, and 100% better than 'Princess')

Not keen on Sunny on girls or boys, very non name to me.

The rest are all lovely on their own. They all have a certain ring to them, without being daft.

But your link of middle names turns them a bit clownish.

On the other hand, middle names are pretty contained with close family/friends, your dd is known (I assume) as Annie, which is lovely and as an adult she can choose to be just Annie, which is classic and could be any sort of person, or to let people know she is Annie Coco which is much more off beat and requires a personality type to live up to.

So I wouldn't be that bothered by an unusual middle name, as long as the first is one that will carry her through.

edgewater · 24/01/2020 23:13

I had a dog called clover.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 24/01/2020 23:13

Only adding this as no one else has mentioned it but when I was at school the boys always took the mick out of the girls named Flora (there were 3) because ‘they spread easy’🤦🏼‍♀️...Clover would prob have the same connotations! I know a Tiger and an Inigo...both boys...but in this age of gender fluidity you can obvs go with what floats your boat...

smellingofroses · 24/01/2020 23:13

Both my daughters have unusual names i chose them carefully to make them unique but not stupid/ silly, for obvious reasons I won't say what they are but I will say all love all those names you've picked.
I loved Soliel ( sun), Fleur and Otillie (Tillie ) for short they all made my list.
Do name them whatever you like people will comment but thats because they didn't have the guts to call their child something unique and beautifull 😉
