Girls name 'Beige'

So I met someone earlier and her daughter is called Beige. She's a preteen.
Is this a name anyone has ever heard of? I've only ever known it to be a colour.
She only wrote it down so I don't know how she pronounced it.

OP posts:

ThePawtriarchy · 30/01/2020 06:18

I love it and wear Chanel’s Beige perfume. I wish I had been called it!

ThePawtriarchy · 30/01/2020 06:19

(and I can’t even say it in the lovely french accent!)

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 06:35

Thank you, it's actually a very soft name when said properly more so in French he he x

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 06:56

but you live in England OP. if you lived in France it would be a perfectly normal name and people would know how to pronounce it.

if someone lived in France and decided to call a child Ennuyeuse - maybe that is a name in some other culture for all I know - you can bet a few eyebrows would be raised there.

insulting the random strangers on the internet who tell you what almost everyone who lives in the culture that you live in will think of the name is not going to stop every teacher at school and every parent of classmates as well as the classmates themselves from having the same opinion. obviously they will be too polite to say anything to your face - this is a genuine benefit of an anonymous forum.

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 06:58

sorry OP was used incorrectly above obviously.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 07:07

That's your opinion and a few strangers on the internet, to be honest I don't really care I choose it and if you have a child you will have chosen there name that's kind of how this naming a child thing works ,you don't have to like it and I may not like your child's name such is life. I wanted a name that meant something to me ,not just because it's in the UK's top 100 names. You obviously have a strong opinion on my daughter's name ,get over it love it's not changing and she loves it

StCharlotte · 30/01/2020 07:07

if someone lived in France and decided to call a child Ennuyeuse - maybe that is a name in some other culture for all I know - you can bet a few eyebrows would be raised there.

But doesn't France - among other countries - have a list of "approved" names that can't be veered from? I assume Beige is on it but Ennuyeuse (which also sounds lovely BTW Grin) wouldn't get past M. le Registrar.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 07:21

The fact that a haute couture global brand renowned for its style and class and that's been dressing starlets, popstars, royalty for decades decided to call one of there leading perfumes Beige tells me that Beige as a name is anything but boring or is Chanel deluded too?? We can go round and round this debate ,yes it's not a name everyone will like but I don't think people should be rude about it , different strokes for different folks and all that jazz Smile

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 07:26

you are quite right @StCharlotte - and yes Ennuyeuse sounds like a lovely name to anglophone ears.

@Welllookwhoitis is perfectly at liberty to pretend to herself that the opinion of every single person who commented on this thread before she showed up is unrepresentative of the population. no skin off my nose.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 07:31

Ah such as when Katy Hopkins has an opinion on children's names and decided to voice it to the UK 🙄 irrelevant really isn't it? You don't have to like it ,and for the record we no longer live in England.

copperoliver · 30/01/2020 07:32

Horrible. Z

SemperIdem · 30/01/2020 07:37

@Welllookwhoitis

Ah yes, I see it now. As Chanel has named a perfume Beige, it’s really classy to call your daughter it. Confused

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 07:44

My daughter was named beige before the perfume, if you re scroll you will see why, just so happens that one of the world's most distinguished stylish brands decided to name one of there scents Beige the following year🙄

Mulledwineinajug · 30/01/2020 07:48

welllookwhoitis I actually thought that this thread was potentially a disciplinary offence before you even posted.

In your shoes, I’d screenshot and send to the OP’s boss. I’m taking a screenshot for you now so that if it gets deleted before you can, you can pm me for it if you want it.

StegosaurusRex · 30/01/2020 08:16

From AdachiOljulo's link:

The name Fanny is more or less regarded as old-fashioned in most countries these days (although it's still inexplicably popular in France). It's not hard to see why this name fell out of favor when you know what the word really means. In the United States, the word is used to refer to the buttocks which is pretty bad but nowhere near as bad as what it means in British English. Across the pond, the term is a pretty offensive slang term that refers to a woman's private parts.

So offensive! -and definitely not completely normal and one of the better terms (although I do actually hate it)-

CircleofWillis · 30/01/2020 08:20

I always think this might happen when teachers post the actual very unusual name of a child in their class rather than skirt around it. In this case the OP has been very indiscreet and caused a data breech which could have serious repercussions.

If I were the OP I would apologize profusely for posting the information online, take down the thread and hope Welllook doesn't takes it further.

Imagine if it wasn't Welllook and she complained to the council offices. How on earth do you prove that an anonymous online identity isn't you?

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 08:44

what data breach? no information has been released about this child.

Blearyeyes20 · 30/01/2020 12:53

Well isn’t @Mulledwineinajug an absolute meddling delight?

Interesting name imo but I don’t think any data breach has happened here, much to the chagrin of people like Mulled.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3049054-to-ask-the-worst-names-you-have-heard

It was done already. How many Beiges are pottering around the country? I call the PP bullshit, unless she trawls the internet googling :"Girl called beige MN" to double check how many time her daughter's name comes up.

PeggySuehadababy · 30/01/2020 13:43

OP post is not offensive either. She's just asking if anyone met a girl called Beige. Not saying the name is terrible or whatsoever.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 15:01

Aren't you an absolute delight Peggy🙄 you have no idea the context or situation or council I was at, I could take this further as I think the mother being normal is quite insulting as is wondering about my culture considering the lady's position. But alas I'm not a bitch ,and this post was brought to my attention by several people

Mulledwineinajug · 30/01/2020 16:54

Actually, blearyeyes, the legal precedent is that it amounts to gross misconduct. Depending on the OP’s role.

CircleofWillis · 30/01/2020 17:14

If it really was Welllook I believe it is a data breech. The child's name was revealed while the OP was acting in a professional capacity for a government body. This information was then used for personal entertainment purposes on a well known popular website. Enough information was given for the person concerned to identify herself and to be identified by friends.
If the OP has simply said "I know someone who has named her daughter Beige" it would have been fine.

similarminimer · 30/01/2020 17:29

Data breach? Bollocks. We know that someone with a daughter called beige filled in a form. Could have been any one of the other beige's at any cat shelter, swimming pool or hospital. The only person hwho has mentioned the council is the mother of a beige who may or may not be the beige in question.

PeggySuehadababy · 30/01/2020 18:49

@Welllookwhoitis ah yes, of course it was random stranger on the internet
