Girls name 'Beige'

isthisaname · 17/01/2020 14:02

So I met someone earlier and her daughter is called Beige. She's a preteen.
Is this a name anyone has ever heard of? I've only ever known it to be a colour.
She only wrote it down so I don't know how she pronounced it.

OP posts:

FenellaVelour · 29/01/2020 21:57

😬

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 29/01/2020 22:20

I was hoping it was like a nickname for Bridget or something! That's absolutely awful.

Welllookwhoitis · 29/01/2020 23:48

Well I suppose opinions are like rectums, everyone has one !

pallisers · 29/01/2020 23:53

I express no opinion on the name but I am kind of wondering why Welllookwhoitis's father rejected it for her 40 years ago.

Welllookwhoitis · 29/01/2020 23:58

As it didn't bode well with my surname ,but my daughter obviously has a different surname to what I did as a infant , I've actually met another girl called beige and she too is anything but dull 😃

StCharlotte · 30/01/2020 00:36

I know an Australian bloke called Gray.

But Beige? That's just shit.

StCharlotte · 30/01/2020 00:40

Ooh sorry Welllookwhoitis I missed your post.

Still not keen but I apologise for my rudeness.

Bowerbird5 · 30/01/2020 00:53

StC so do I. Wonder if it is the same one!

Had a *- blue in class. Onto about number five of Nevaeh. Have liked all of them so the name has grown on me.

Not keen on Beige at all, sorry. Met an Ocean not long ago in the supermarket. Dad was shouting it and little girl was ignoring him. Perhaps she doesn’t like it either.

rededucator · 30/01/2020 01:04

Welllookehoitis It's unfortunate that you came across this thread. But, out of interest, does the response towards the name of all posters affect how you feel about the name or worry you on your daughters behalf?

NorthEndGal · 30/01/2020 01:23

Oh, I love an awkward pause!

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/01/2020 01:28

Surely calling someone Beige is actually an insult.

pallisers · 30/01/2020 01:54

trying to imagine a surname that Beige absolutely won't work with ....

Any ideas anyone? I suppose Beige Grey would be a bit off or Beige Brown or White or any other colour surname. Still, if you loved the name would that matter that much?

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/01/2020 02:23

florababy34 · 30/01/2020 02:41

Hi it was me you met that Friday and my daughter's name is indeed beige, as she was called after my French father whom always liked the name for me almost 40 years ago and as my father died and I found out I was having a girl she was called Beige rather than bump the g is silent in French so sounds like bayshh . Small world me coming across this and not very professional to discuss my details or my daughter's really seeing as tho you work for the Council

Oops. @Welllookwhoitis sorry that your name choice was insulted like this! I always wonder how often this must happen that people recognise their own story on Mumsnet.

florababy34 · 30/01/2020 02:46

Sorry, I didn't bold the quoted post..

OvenGlovesWillTearUsApart · 30/01/2020 03:05

It could also mean understatedly stylish. Imagine something simple and chic, perhaps in linen, worn by a wealthy woman.

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 30/01/2020 03:56

Small world!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 30/01/2020 04:34

Welllookehoitis I didnt see your post until now. Learning the pronunciation makes me like it more. Every name has a story so this is a good reminder to be kind. It would be a boring place if we were all called Emily. There's apparently an actress called Beige Dawn Adams.

do think its important to remember that everyone was named their name for a reason and if we all had the same taste the world would be a dull place. I like learning about new names

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/01/2020 04:50

😂

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 30/01/2020 05:14

I know some "interesting" names Id love to share on these kind of threads but similarly terrified of being outed if they're the only ones...

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 05:27

that's a really terrible name and I do hope the poor child has a nice middle name that she can choose to be known as once she understands what an awful name she has been given.

I don't think its 'unprofessional' for someone to start a conversation on this subject. its not like any of us have any info about the nature of the appointment or even the city it happened in so nothing confidential has been disclosed.

the opinions about the name expressed here are only what everyone the child/her mother have ever met are already thinking.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 05:31

It is indeed a small worldWink ,and the name has great meaning to me aside the creamy colour I don't ever see it that way as it's pronounced differently and softer. In honesty most people love it when they hear it said aloud ,but if they don't that's there choice , there's lots of names I'm not keen on but a name
doesn't define a person and I'm sure that name that was chosen probably has a story or love behind it unless said name is apple lol. We all can't be called Anna or Dave as it would be confusing and boring world.
My daughter thankfully has never came across rudeness nor narrow-mindednes yet,and loves the fact it was as if, her grandfather had choosen it for her ,tho she sadly never got to meet him.

AdachiOljulo · 30/01/2020 05:55

Here's an article about unfortunate name meanings that makes for interesting reading. these are from the "other direction" - most of the names are perfectly normal names in anglophone countries.

The equivalent situation would be if someone Finnish, living in Finland but with a British father chose the name Tylsa knowing that it means "boring" in the language that the child would grow up speaking.

Welllookwhoitis · 30/01/2020 06:13

Beige doesn't mean boring or bland in French culture ,it's obviously a new trendy millennial term penned in the UK. My daughter loves her name and I just hope ignorant ,judgemental "grown ups" don't pass or project there negativity on to her or give her a complex about something which is of no relevence to them really , it's merely just there opinion. At the end of the day it's just a name Confused
