Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone had any comments on the names Jamie or Luca for a girl and which you prefer? Thanks!

I know a female Lucca which I think is nice.

I always think its a bit unfair that its almost seen as cool and edgy to give a girl a boys name, but hardly anyone would give a boy a girls name.

I’ve known Jamie and Jaime for girls. I did once know a Luca which was short for Lucretia. If you love them I think both are fine to do.

Wasail · 18/12/2019 16:04

Sorry, I know I’m derailing but the songdoes not say it’s a boy or girl but certainly it’s a domestic violence scenario so much more likely a girl/ woman

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 18/12/2019 16:10

Luka by Suzanne Vega is about child abuse, and the child in the song is definitely a boy. She based it on a real-life situation that she'd encountered herself.

Anyway, I think Jamie for a girl can be OK but would spell it Jaime. Luca is a boy's name. As is Luka.

Jamie or Jaime both are nice

Or

Lucia?

Luca for me is a boys name only

BlueEyedFloozy · 18/12/2019 16:16

My teen sister is a Jaime.

She loves it, no one has ever pointed out that it's a boys name to her or if they have already she didn't care enough to mention it.

viques · 18/12/2019 16:20

THe song does not say if Luka is a girl or a boy, but Suzanne Vega says Luka was a child who lived in her building , she does not think he was being abused at all , she just took his name to use in the song. She is coming to London in May next year, am very tempted to go but I
think it is a venue which is not allocated seating, so not for me.

Jaime or Lucia. you might get away with the spelling Jamye but the poor child would have to constantly telling people it was pronounced rhyme with gamey not game.

Wasail · 18/12/2019 16:20

I stand corrected.
I still like Luka for a girl.

PlantPotting · 18/12/2019 16:20

I like both of your names for girls or boys

AloneLonelyLoner · 18/12/2019 16:21

They're boys' names! Especially Luca.

viques · 18/12/2019 16:22

Custard bear Jaime is the accepted girls spelling, the op was asking about Jamie.

pigdogridesagain · 18/12/2019 16:24

Jamie can be used for either gender, Luca is a boys name.

Thornhill58 · 18/12/2019 16:26

@TatianaLarina exactly my thoughts.

lifeisgoodagain · 18/12/2019 16:28

They are both boys names

3timeslucky · 18/12/2019 16:37

I'd consider them both to be boys names.

And Jaime is the Spanish for James so I'd also consider that to be a boys name.

CanICelebrate · 18/12/2019 16:37
Hmm
rubyismyworld · 18/12/2019 16:48

Have you ever seen Ja’mie private school girl/summer heights high?

Tonz · 18/12/2019 16:48

I have a “boys name” I’m a Toni and I always loved it. My sister is a Charlie and loves it. I’d go Jaime over Luca

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 18/12/2019 16:49

How about Derek?

Marcipex · 18/12/2019 16:56

Jayme for a girl, if you must, but never Luca.

Epanoui · 18/12/2019 16:59

Derek gets my vote! Grin

bookworm14 · 18/12/2019 17:04

Luca is the Italian equivalent of Luke. What about Lucy/Lucia?

user1471449295 · 18/12/2019 17:09

They’re boys names. I have heard of one girl Jaime but don’t like at all. Definitely not Luca. That is only a boys name. What about Lucia?

Episcomama · 18/12/2019 17:10

Luca is a boy's name!

Cookit · 18/12/2019 17:10

I don’t mind girls nicknames which are boys names so like Charlie for a girl when her name is likely Charlotte. I don’t think that is controversial.

But a full name being unequivocally a boys name makes no sense to me.

I do agree that Luca sounds kind of feminine (I guess it’s the fact that it ends in -a which is common for girls names) but the fact is that it’s not a girls name at all. Please don’t call your daughter Luca.

Jamie I have less strong views on because it’s not really even a boys name, it’s a nickname isn’t it? - usually Jamie would be James on the birth certificate. So I guess on that basis Jamie isn’t as obviously a boys name but I would still think it’s a pretty bad idea.
