Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone had any comments on the names Jamie or Luca for a girl and which you prefer? Thanks!

I've heard Jamie as a girls name mainly in US I think thought . But not Luca which as far as I know is only used for a boy. Do you mens Lucia which is a girl's name?

Ellmau · 18/12/2019 20:07

They definitely both sound like boys' names to me.

What about Lucasta? Or Jemma?

MikeUniformMike · 18/12/2019 21:06

Why do you want to give your daughter a boy's name?
Jamie and Luca are popular boy's names and it will be a PITA for her.

FizzyGreenWater · 19/12/2019 13:11

Um, neither?

SugarThreat · 19/12/2019 14:01

I love them for a girl!

PureAlchemy · 19/12/2019 14:22

They’re great names for a boy.

TigerBilly · 19/12/2019 19:52

For everyone saying they are boys names, I think they mean unisex, same as Jessie/Jesse, Charlie, Kelly, Jo/Joe, Leslie/Lesley, Billy and so on.

Jamie and Luca are lovely. There is a female character in a TV show called The Good Fight and her name is Lucca and it’s lovely.

Please don’t doubt yourself over the comments on here

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/12/2019 19:54

Neither.

They’re boys names.

No. They are boys names.

TatianaLarina · 19/12/2019 20:16

Lucca is a town in Tuscany near Florence and Siena - so that’s ok.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/12/2019 20:24

No, I don't mean unisex, I mean they're boys' names. All the examples you listed are either shortened versions of full names (like Charlie for Charles or Charlotte) or they have different spellings for the male and female versions of the name (like Lesley and Leslie). The only one I would agree is genuinely unisex is Kelly but I doubt anyone would use that for a boy these days.

Jamie and Luca are not unisex names.

MikeUniformMike · 19/12/2019 20:43

They are boys' names. They are not unisex names.

To the names that have a male spelling and a female spelling you could add Peter/Peta, Lee/Leigh

People's comment on here are what people IRL will be thinking but probably will be too polite to tell you. IRL, they will probably say " Oh it's a boy".

citcatgirl45 · 19/12/2019 20:50

I work in a school and we have 4 girl Jamie's in yr 1. Jaymee, Jaimie x2 and Jamie. No other female Jamie's have ever attended the school.

I really like it and now think of it as a female name . Reception has 2 Ian's!!!!!

coconutty101 · 19/12/2019 20:51

Neither!

TigerBilly · 19/12/2019 21:33

The names are unisex, it might not be your opinion that they aren’t but its still a fact that they are widely used for males and females. You have pulled my list apart due to male female spellings but said aloud, how do you differentiate? Charlie is a name in its own right and not a shortened version of Charles or Charlotte. Jamie and Luca are lovely girls names as are:
Alex (Jones)
Drew (Barrymore)
Cameron (Diaz)
Hayden (Panettiere)
Harley (Quinn and yes I know it’s fictional)
Aubrey is an up and coming girls name which until recently was predominantly male.

saturnnc · 19/12/2019 21:36

I know a 2yr old Luca and she's fab!
She's one of those kids with a really big personality, kinda sassy and strong willed but also very sweet and polite.

I like it

Honeyroar · 19/12/2019 21:38

I’m not keen on either for a girl. How about changing it to Lucca, after the Italian town, so it’s like Sienna? Becomes a bit different from the regular boys name.

FruitcakeOfHate · 19/12/2019 21:38

FFS! Neither. Why not name your son Rose or Caitlin? Why's it always some boys name for a girl. Silly.

FriedasCarLoad · 19/12/2019 21:39

If you love those names for a girl, maybe use Jemima or Lucinda, as so she has the option of a more standard girls name.

FriedasCarLoad · 19/12/2019 21:43

*Jemima or Lucinda on the birth certificate, I meant to writ

sanityisamyth · 19/12/2019 21:45

I thought it was Jaime for a girl?

StealthMama · 19/12/2019 21:48

Recently met a baby girl called Lucca..lovely

hazeljo · 19/12/2019 21:51

Luca is not a unisex name, it is an Italian boy's name, a very masculine one at that. Just because a few non-Italians have called their daughters Luca does not change it to a unisex name.

happycamper11 · 19/12/2019 22:01

Mumsnet always hates Luca for a girl but I love it. I think I'd spell it Lucca though, seems a bit more feminine. Not so keen on Jamie but my hairdresser is Jamie and I've never thought of it as odd. She's very girly

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 19/12/2019 22:02

Alex (Jones)

Do you mean Charlotte Alexandra Jones?

The rest are American who have different naming styles to the U.K.
