Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone had any comments on the names Jamie or Luca for a girl and which you prefer? Thanks!

Assumed boy names at first as both are typically male names, then saw you mentioned it's for a girl. I'm not a fan tbh

Fifteenthnamechange · 20/12/2019 07:22

I like both for a girl(I'm a real fa of boys' names for girls) but Luca is my fave

Sugarfreejelly · 20/12/2019 07:23

I agree with others, they are boys’ names. You’re setting them up for a lifetime of confusion, correction and annoyance.

BertrandRussell · 20/12/2019 07:25

“ Jamie (and other forms) are widely used and accepted as a girls name now.”
I suppose it depends what you mean by widely used and accepted. It peaked in 2004 with 75 girls and has been in slow decline since...

plonkie · 20/12/2019 07:25

My name is one of those names, but spelt differently. Its unusual and the way its spelt makes it feminine, I think. I love my name (thanks mum!)! I get a lot of compliments on it.

BlueEyedFloozy · 20/12/2019 07:38

@BertrandRussell fair enough - I guess I wasn't pedantic enough to check the official stats... Apologies, I'll reword.

Where I am - personally, here in my actual experience of life with a sibling who lives with one of these names and from other people I know (Highlands) - it isn't questioned by many (if any?) and it seems to have been accepted as a female name.

I know 3 female Jaimee/Jaime's under 30, can't say it's ever occurred to me that they may be blokes 🙄

FruitcakeOfHate · 20/12/2019 12:33

@FruitcakeOfHate, you don't/can't speak for everyone.

I never said I did Hmm. My opinion is that giving girls traditional boy names is ridiculous.

PlantPotting · 20/12/2019 12:37

I don’t know why people get so het up about this type of thing. It’s just a name. It’s just a gender. Either can be changed. I like that names are more fluid now. I hope one day that equality will mean boys will also be given girls names. Think we are a long way off that yet sadly

Todayissunny · 20/12/2019 12:46

I know a 30 year old woman called Jamie (known her all her life). For me there is nothing boyish or masculine about the name. I love it.
Luca is very popular as a boys name in central Europe and Italy (one of the most popular boys name in Germany and Switzerlandfor years). But Nicola is a boys name in many Latin language countries too. I think Luca would be lovely for a girl but confusing for many people.

BertrandRussell · 20/12/2019 12:46

“ I like that names are more fluid now”

It would be great if they were. But they aren’t.

FizzyGreenWater · 20/12/2019 14:03

Jamie for a girl is very 80s somehow! Jamie Lee Curtis I suppose. Bit naff.

Luca just isn't a girls' name.

SueGeneris · 20/12/2019 14:14

Luca is sometimes a girl’s name. I know a beautiful little girl by that name. However, her parents are Hungarian and it is pronounced with a soft c - so like Lutza. I assumed it was like a Hungarian version of Lucy.

But in general here - it’s used for boys.

TatianaLarina · 20/12/2019 14:21

If names are more fluid why are there not more boys called Lucy?

It’s simply that more girls are given boys names because maleness is cool.

And may I say, having a unisex dim of a long name, I’m often presumed male and it’s tiresome.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 20/12/2019 14:46

If I hear of a little girl who's been given a foreign-language name that is for boys, I tend to assume that her parents are ignorant of the culture from which it comes and chose what they essentially thought was a pretty noise, rather than giving any real thought to what the name means or signifies. I would think the same about a girl called Nikita. It's just rather arrogant to think that you know better than the Italians (or the Russians) whether common names in their language are for boys or for girls.

I did actually come across a girl called Etienne once, which is the French equivalent of Stephen. It was hard not to judge the parents who lumbered her with that one.

MikeUniformMike · 20/12/2019 14:49

I agree with Tatiana.

Boys names that become unisex tend to stop being boys names.

NannyR · 20/12/2019 14:52

I would think the same about a girl called Nikita.
Nikita is an Indian girls name as well as a Russian boys name.

JKScot4 · 20/12/2019 14:55

Out of all the girls names available you get it down to 2 boys names; neither of which are nice and also pretty common now too.

AlexanderHalexander · 20/12/2019 14:58

They are boys names.

Giving girls traditionally male names is a dreadful American celebrity trend, and thus (dare I say it?) very, very chavvy.

I love Lucia though....

DelphiniumBlue · 20/12/2019 15:05

Yes, Jane/Janie and Lucy/Lucia. Why do you want to give your DD a boy's name? If you wanted to go gender neutral, there are names which would fit that category, but Jamie and Luca are not gender neutral.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 20/12/2019 23:55

Lucia or Lucinda instead of Lucca
Jemma or Jemima as alternatives to Jamie

AlpacaGoodnight · 22/12/2019 20:06

I've met numerous female Jamie's/Jaime's but never a Luca. I am not a fan though and always wonder why their parents chose a boys name!
