Well damn, it's a girl. HELP

I have just found out I'm having a girl at my 20 (ish) wk scan. For some reason I had it very firmly in my head that it would be a boy, and had my very favourite name ready, which DP and I both love - handily. (I am being ridiculously over prepared I realise. But I just like names...)
Anyway, girl - lovely news, but I can't do girls names v well :/

This is the shortlist made with DP, we have quite different tastes:

Juliana (poss shortened to Nia. NOT JULIE)
Evangeline (I like long version)
Lilias
Laurel
Iris

Have at me...

Oh I'm so stuck. I wish there was a name I loved.

(Cleo and Kitty have been vetoed)

Margaret /Maggie
Clementine/ Clemmie
Roxanne/Roxanna
Pearl
Delilah
Ottilie (Ottie)
Cora
Eliza
River
Winter
Jemima
Holly

Laurel and Iris are lovely. How about Laura? Beautiful, classic and currently underused.

Juliana is really nice but please not Nia. If anything it would shorten naturally to Ana, or perhaps Jules.

I like Lilian a lot but for some reason can't get with Lilias.

Evangeline is nice but a mouthful and she will end up Evie.

How about Felicitas (Latin/German version of Felicity)?

MikeUniformMike · 09/12/2019 13:55

Juliana (poss shortened to Nia. NOT JULIE) - I don't know where you get Nia from, but she'll be Jools
Evangeline (I like long version) - Too long. Too many Ev- names around.
Lilias - looks like a sanpro
Laurel - Laurel Ann Hardy?
Iris - the only one that seems ok

marmitecheesetoast · 09/12/2019 14:57

I think Iris is best from your list

burritofan · 09/12/2019 15:06

Iris is the best of the lot, and actually good in its own right and not just compared to the others.

Your names made me think:

Beatrix
Nora
Penelope
Sorrel
Ivy
Helena

TatianaLarina · 09/12/2019 15:29

I like Iris and Juliana the most. (Prefer the Giuliana spelling - which also means she could be Gigi, Gia or Lia).

Evangeline always sounds vagina to me.

I have a friend called Laurel and she’s constantly called Laura and Lauren.

Sssneks · 09/12/2019 15:39

Iris is lovely. So is Juliana, but I think you'll have a hard time enforcing Nia as a nickname.

From your list, you seem to like very classical, pretty/dainty, names so based on that here are some suggestions.

Eloise
Elodie
Marianna
Alexandrina (nickname Drina)
Colette
Iridia
Lily/Liliana/Lila
Isolde

notnowmaybelater · 09/12/2019 15:47

Just to say that nice as Juliana is, you won't be able to enforce a nickname after the preschool years.

If you have strong feelings about nicknames it's best to choose a name that doesn't shorten, or one where you like all the shortenings.

Katerina
Lilith
Diana
Helena
Thea
Judith
Margot

...

bridgetreilly · 09/12/2019 16:42

Lois
Linnet
Hebe
Livia

ShannonShouts · 09/12/2019 16:44

India?

Cookit · 09/12/2019 16:53

Juliana is cute but Nia is a completely different name and I can’t imagine being used as a nickname for a Juliana.

Evangeline is nice. Do you like Evie? - because it is likely that that will be the nn.

I have never heard of Lilias. Is it Lily-ass? I’ll be honest, I thought of Elias which is a boys name when I read that.

Laurel and Iris are nice.

Si1ver · 09/12/2019 16:57

Iris is lovely, it was on my girls list. So were

Robin
Orla
Iona

Eliza
Beatrice

Caramel78 · 09/12/2019 17:04

Iris is really nice.

Iris is the best of your list. Very nice.

Edith
Bryony
Nina
Tamsin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/12/2019 18:47

I don’t know how you’re connected Nia to Juliana. Confused.
I love Iris.
Not fussed on Laurel or Lilias.

If you like Nia but want a longer name on BC. How about
Antonia.
Apollonia

NemophilistRebel · 09/12/2019 18:49

Laurel is perfect

Ellmau · 09/12/2019 20:09

Juliana and Iris are both lovely.

Might you like Amaryllis?

Elbeagle · 09/12/2019 20:13

I can’t see how Nia comes from Juliana? I know a couple of Juliana’s (Iovely name) and they’re both ‘jules’.
Lilias sounds like an old mans name to be for some reason.
I like laurel and Iris.
Really dislike Evangeline.

CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 09:55

Lilias is a Scottish name, a form of Lilian.

And it was DP who got Nia from Juliana...

CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 09:59

Also I looove Linnet but DP would say no. He has also vetoed Sorrel. I get this 'you can't control nicknames' thing I really do - DP is very strong on giving a child a name which has options for them to choose a shortening.

And yes I know Evangeline will probably end up Evie, although I have heard of little Evangelines being called the whole thing.

I'd probably go for Lilias tbh, but there are just so many 'sounds like a boy' 'why would you call your child something-ASS', and potential confusions with Lilian or whatever. I don't know if I'm brave enough :(
