Well damn, it's a girl. HELP

I have just found out I'm having a girl at my 20 (ish) wk scan. For some reason I had it very firmly in my head that it would be a boy, and had my very favourite name ready, which DP and I both love - handily. (I am being ridiculously over prepared I realise. But I just like names...)
Anyway, girl - lovely news, but I can't do girls names v well :/

This is the shortlist made with DP, we have quite different tastes:

Juliana (poss shortened to Nia. NOT JULIE)
Evangeline (I like long version)
Lilias
Laurel
Iris

Have at me...

Congratulations on new baby
As an aside no idea how you get nia from Juliana it’s nonsensical.really Lilias I really like

Muddlingalongalone · 14/12/2019 20:56

Either Lilias or Laurel will be lovely. I think Laurel is less popular than Lily/Lillian etc.

Have you considered Lois? In my head it combines Laurel, Iris & Lilias really nicely. I went to school with a Lois. Easy to spell & pronounce and rare without being yoooonique.

Blackopal · 14/12/2019 20:56

How about Lorelei?
Nickames can be Lori/ Lolly

coconutty101 · 14/12/2019 20:58

I like laurel actually...

Also love isobel, violet, lottie, Florence.

grasukdesim · 14/12/2019 21:05

Lilias sounds male to me but that might be because I know an Ilias.

TrixchangeK · 14/12/2019 21:07

Laurel definitely! Smile

CassandrasCastle · 14/12/2019 21:23

@Hillaria Oo, interesting that you know a little Lilias!

I'm not an Ottilie fan...

I did wander about Lara, but, wait for it, DP wasn't keen :p Lorna is pretty great, but I also know a couple of horrid ones 😨

Cecily?

Cece or lily for shortening

moodolph · 14/12/2019 21:41

I know a lilias, we are in Scotland and she is lovely. She does however on occasion get called lily arse.

I had two very firm names for a Dd. Scarlett or jemima. Then I saw her. She was tiny and so not either of those names. So we spent a couple of days getting to know her and she became something completely different. The nicknames she has now are nothing at all what I thought when We picked the name either, so I suppose I, saying what will be will be!

pinkpillowcases · 14/12/2019 22:00

Cassandrascastle what about Ilse - actually will write it in upper case to avoid confusion - ILSE (pronounced ilsa). You mentioned your DP liking Germanic names, it's a Germanic diminutive of Elizabeth but a name in its own right.

ladycarlotta · 14/12/2019 22:07

I agree with moodolph! You don't need to be 100% fixed on 'the' name right now. I think it's quite healthy to have a couple of options in your back pocket.

Like you, OP, I was certain we were having a boy and there was one boy's name that we both agreed on and really liked from very early on. I was shocked to discover at the 20 week scan that DD was a girl, and spent the next 19 weeks honing the shortlist, which was really tricky as DP and I kept vetoing one another's suggestions. When she was born, DP was so excited and loved-up he just insisted that she be named IMMEDIATELY so that he could announce her properly. It just wasn't that much of a debate all of a sudden, there was a name on the shortlist that felt really certain, so we went for it. We didn't register her for another 4 weeks so we could have changed our minds. I myself was nameless for 6 weeks while my parents figured it out.

Laurel and Lilias are both lovely. Don't worry about name FOMO, your little one will be perfect whatever she's called. Also don't worry about anyone else's opinion. Congratulations on your daughter, you are going to have the MOST fun!

ironickname · 14/12/2019 22:09

I met a Liliana today, she was a lovely little badass - everything you'd want a daughter to be. Bright, bold and beautiful.

CassandrasCastle · 14/12/2019 23:02

@ladycarlotta Och thanks! SmileCake What you say makes perfect sense.

Also big thanks @pinkpillowcases for Ilse! I genuinely really like it, and will run it by DP..!

Armandine?
Juno?
Diana?

ImaLauren · 15/12/2019 20:59

I like Iris and Laurel. As my username says, I’m a Lauren and I do get a lot of emails to Laura (even though my email address is [email protected]), but it doesn’t really bother me. I think it happens a lot with Anne/Anna Katie/Kate etc and might happen with Lilias/Lillian/Lily so if they’re your top two I wouldn’t worry about it!
Good luck deciding!

youllhavehadyourtea · 16/12/2019 09:12

Lilias is just fab. Go for it.

PlantPotting · 16/12/2019 09:34

I love Iris

ladycarlotta · 16/12/2019 11:53

Ooh, Ilse was on our shortlist!

denicewatts1977 · 17/12/2019 08:29

Maybe something like Jesus, I don't know
