I have just found out I'm having a girl at my 20 (ish) wk scan. For some reason I had it very firmly in my head that it would be a boy, and had my very favourite name ready, which DP and I both love - handily. (I am being ridiculously over prepared I realise. But I just like names...)
Anyway, girl - lovely news, but I can't do girls names v well :/

This is the shortlist made with DP, we have quite different tastes:

Juliana (poss shortened to Nia. NOT JULIE)
Evangeline (I like long version)
Lilias
Laurel
Iris

Have at me...

Yes, Laurel is pretty great, and Lori. I can definitely understand the annoyance it might cause her if she keeps getting called Laura/Lauren though.

In real life, the few friends I've mentioned Iris to hate it Wine

For some reason I want to suggest Dahlia

CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 10:15

I like that, you can read me Grin

Stupid question though, but how would you pronounce Dahlia? Is it Day-lia?

OP posts:
stophuggingme · 10/12/2019 10:19

I would say Dah- Lee-A
But I think Day- lia is actually the English pronounciation ?

Runforwine · 10/12/2019 10:20

Lilies is my mother's name, we are Scottish and she has never had any problems with people getting her name mixed up with other lil names. There is no emphasis on the last two letters of her name (as) so no problem with that. They only comments she's ever had about her name are nice ones.

NannySusan · 10/12/2019 10:21

I like Dahlia too, I would pronounce it Da - Leeaa. But I think that will depend on where you are.
I also like Honoria. Possible nicknames are Nora, Honey, Ria.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 10/12/2019 10:25

I’m Scottish and don’t pronounce lilias as Lilly-Ass it’s more like Lilly-Us

Difficultcustomer · 10/12/2019 10:28

Day lia. I like all the names, except Evangeline just because it’s a pain having a long name. If you don’t live in Scotland Lilias might get changed to Lilian

WhispersOfWickedness · 10/12/2019 10:37

Ooo, I love evangeline Smile How about Celeste?

seagullsaremynemisis · 10/12/2019 10:58

Delphine?

AJPTaylor · 10/12/2019 11:01

Evangaline may be a cute Evie as a small child.
Will be known as Vange as a teen. I would have a think on.

CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 12:01

@Runforwine Good to know! I am Scottish living in England, and like the idea of having a Scottish connection with the name. Also, it is Lily-us. Not LilyASSS... heh.

I prefer Dah-li-a, but have a feeling DP would dislike.

He is a fan of Germanic names...

OP posts:
CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 12:03

For me, I think it is between Laurel and Lilias.

I've been going off Evangeline ever so slightly. Iris is really pretty though. And poor DP's lone name on the list, Juliana, feels a bit rejected.#

Maybe as a middle name?? (Imagine Evangeline Juliana...)

Flymetothestars · 10/12/2019 12:31

Darhlia sounds like Darlik
How about

Delilah

CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 12:52

I do like Delilah, but my v religious family would have a fit 🙈

OP posts:
CassandrasCastle · 10/12/2019 12:54

I wouldn't say Darlia because...is that an English pronunciation thing?

OP posts:
steppemum · 10/12/2019 12:58

Darhlia sounds like Darlik

except that Dahlia is the name of the flower and the original pronunciation is/was Day-lia.
The pronunciations DARH-lia ia actually pretty new. You never heard it pronounced that way 30 years ago

I thik Day-lia is really pretty, but can't stand Darh-lia!

steppemum · 10/12/2019 12:59

I really don't like Iris, maybe I am old enough to have known a lot of old ladies called Iris, but it just doens't do it for me.

From your original list, I love Laurel.

If I had another daughter my number one choice would be Ayla, it's Scottish without be full on. Great meaning to, strong and resilient.

steppemum · 10/12/2019 13:11

Yup! Putting in r where there is a lengthened vowel

except in this case the English pronunciation is Day-lia?
So no extra r and no lengthened vowel!

I think that the Darhlia pronunciation came from a character in a film/TV show called Dahlia. In which case the Darhlia version is the American one.

Pemba · 10/12/2019 13:14

English pronunciation of both the flower and the name is Day-lia. Dah-lia is American I think.

Pemba · 10/12/2019 13:17

OP how about Liliana? Pretty and you presumably like the 'ana' ending, as in Juliana.
