Which do you prefer out of these two? Thanks!

Are either of these names? Have you made them up or am I out of touch?

I'm not really a fan of either, what about Eleanor, Ellie or Elin if you like E names?

Divgirl2 · 15/09/2019 17:08

Eleri is one of my favourite names (no longer live in Wales so on the vetoed forever list unfortunately). Never heard of Eleni.

Scruffalicious · 15/09/2019 17:10

Eleri is Welsh (E-LEH-ree) and I know a Greek Eleni (E-LEN-ee) but I don't know if that's the origin. I've met lots of Eleris, too, due to location.

Both beautiful.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 15/09/2019 17:11

Eleni is a Greek name

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 15/09/2019 17:12

Ie Not made up - I’ve have lots of cousins with the name. Anglicised version is Helen.

cuddlyquarry · 15/09/2019 17:14

@FatAndFurious7 yes they are real names. Not a fan of Eleanor / Ellie / Elin I’m afraid.

@Scruffalicious yes I believe that’s right - glad you like them too! I dont have any Greek / Welsh heritage though... but I love the names. Do you think I can still use them?

We know an Eleri, and she does get a lot of pronunciation issues. But it’s a lovely name.

FatAndFurious7 · 15/09/2019 17:15

Apologies for my naivety, truly hadn't heard them before Flowers

Raionsbyaeaarct · 15/09/2019 17:15

Eleri is beautiful!

Spam88 · 15/09/2019 17:16

I love Eleri, my favourite welsh girls name I think. Would be considering it for my baby due in December if my DD1s name wasn't very similar.

MotherOfDragons27 · 15/09/2019 17:18

Both lovely names. There was lots of Eleris when I was growing up in Anglesey (I'm 31) but not so many now. I didn't know Eleni was a Greek name, it actually is a welsh word as well, meaning 'this year'

MikeUniformMike · 15/09/2019 17:18

Eleri is welsh for Hilary, and is pronounced
El-ERRy.
I know many, all in their 50s.
It isn't pronounced El-AIRy.
I think that Eleni is pronounce Elainy.

Eleni is the welsh word for This Year. It is not a welsh name. You get Elena in welsh, and it is pronounced El-ENNa

Scruffalicious · 15/09/2019 17:23

I think if you love the names, love the meanings, and love the places then go for it! Just pass the love on to your DD so the reason for her name becomes the reason she travels part of the world.

Marvinmarvinson · 15/09/2019 17:23

Both lovely names and sound very similar. Eleni is perhaps easier to pronounce?

Perhaps a lesson to you fatandfurious, the world is a lot bigger than just England. Names that aren't obviously English can't be assumed to be 'made up' and its pretty offensive to suggest that.

peachgreen · 15/09/2019 17:25

I've not heard of Eleri until this thread so I might be a bit biased but I don't think it sounds as nice as Eleni (though I bet it's lovely in a Welsh accent!).

123chocolate · 15/09/2019 17:26

Neither. Though Eleri sounds like celery without the "c".

FatAndFurious7 · 15/09/2019 17:27

Marvin, I appreciate that and apologised already, and genuinely feel silly now. But tbf she asked for an opinion and I gave mine - not everyone OP or the new baby will ever encounter will have heard of the names before either so I think it's a fair and honest response.

cuddlyquarry · 15/09/2019 17:32

@FatAndFurious7 trust me no hard feelings, just wanted to let you know that I haven’t been making up names haha!

Christ now I can’t unhear celery without the c... keep replies coming?

Spam88 · 15/09/2019 17:33

If Eleri sounds like celery then you're pronouncing it wrong.

FatAndFurious7 · 15/09/2019 17:33

Cuddlyquarry, thank you I really didn't mean anything by it. For what it's worth now I've reread Eleni a few more times in my head reading this thread its growing on me!

RaininSummer · 15/09/2019 17:37

They are both beautiful. Never heard Eleri before.

Frith2013 · 15/09/2019 17:41

I only know two Elenis and no Eleris, which is surprising living here!

Both names are fine.

NuffingChora · 15/09/2019 17:43

Love Eleri

cuddlyquarry · 15/09/2019 17:50
