I've shortlisted my names list (I think). The only way I managed to do it was by actually writing them down on paper to see if I liked the way I physically wrote her name 🤔

So here we go! Rose will come into it somewhere as it was DP mums name who sadly passed a few years ago. I'm not a huge fan of double barrelled first names though, so will be a middle name at least.

  1. Rosalie
  2. Mabel Rose
  3. Aubrey Rose
  4. Minnie Rose
  5. Autumn Rose
  6. Winter Rose
  7. Dottie Rose (is hanging onto my shortlist by a thread)

Which of these didnt make you grimace?

Aubrey is the prettiest I think.

I don’t like Minnie.

The others sound like types of roses in a garden centre.

I would not want to be called Dottie.

tripletmum8 · 18/08/2019 22:04

Rosalie - beautiful
Mabel Rose - cute but not my favourite
Aubrey Rose - no
Minnie Rose - top cutesy and I’m afraid it won’t age with her
Autumn Rose - gorgeous, might just be adding this to my list
Winter Rose - not really
Dottie Rose - perhaps Dorothy nn Dottie

Balladenny · 18/08/2019 22:06

I love Rosalie and Aubrey Rose.

Mabel Rose is ok. Mabel still seems like an old lady name to me but I know that it is coming back into fashion.

Minnie I don't like unless it's short for something. It just sounds like 'mini'.

Autumn Rose is a bit much for me. I don't mind Autumn by itself, but I think it's a little too nature-y paired with Rose.

Winter I really don't like. Unlike Autumn and Summer, I just can't see Winter as a name. To me, it would be the same as calling your child 'Spring' - it's a word, not a name, if that makes sense.

Dottie Rose I think is lovely, though I would give her the full name of Dorothy Rose and just call her Dottie Rose as a nickname.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 22:11

I loved Aubrey, it was top of my list since we started trying for a baby, but some of my family dont like it as much :(

Now I've had some opinions.
My top 3 are Aubrey Rose, Autumn Rose and Rosalie. The other names can hang around. You never know, she may arrive and I look at her and think 'you're not an Aubrey, you're a Mabel!"

Call me boring but I like names that people can spell snd pronounce so the child wouldnt be saddled with having to continually tell people how to spell or pronounce her name.
Not knowing whether it’s a double barrelled first name or a first and middle name could be annoying for her also if people continually get it wrong although you do have some really lovely names.
Rosalie- I’m singing the song now!
Minnie to me says Minnie Mouse
Dottie Rose to me says spotty rose.
Mabel and Aubrey - lovely
Autumn and Winter are great but not followed by Rose unless it’s a middle name, which is fine.
Depends how much you want to use your mums name day to day. Rose itself is a great name. You also might want to check what spellchecker autocorrects to in all of them as that could be s pain too Smile

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 22:23

I didn't think about spell check! What a fab idea..

Rose will only be a middle name. I dont like double barrelled names, but I also wouldnt continually use her middle name day to day.

So if I decided for Aubrey Rose. When announcing to family/friends of her birth, they will be welcoming Aubrey Rose surname home.. but after that I'd prefer to stick to Aubrey when said aloud. It's more in memory of DP mum, so written down and every so often said out loud is absolutely perfect for us.

Rosalie

SteeperThanHell · 18/08/2019 22:34

The only Aubrey’s I know are male. Out of your names Rosalie is by far the nicest.

user1493494961 · 18/08/2019 22:36

Don't get the hype on here for Aubrey. My Dad had a friend called Aubrey, he'd be about eighty now. Rosalie is quite nice.

POP7777777 · 18/08/2019 22:37

Aubrey Rose xx

Colourfulest · 18/08/2019 22:37

Aubrey100%!!!

Colourfulest · 18/08/2019 22:38

Your family will like it eventually. My mum hated the name Isla but then when my sisters best friend named her daughter Isla she suddenly LOVED it 😂

Butterymuffin · 18/08/2019 22:39

Autumn - sounds nice, everyone will know how to spell it

SylvanianFrenemies · 18/08/2019 22:47

How about Rose or Rosa? The simplicity is nice.

Aubrey is a man's name, evokes thoughts of bushy-pubed figures drawn by Aubrey Beardsley. So no. It's also quite fussy sounding.sou

Mabel is ok.

I am sure you will come up with something lovely.

Heh1991 · 18/08/2019 23:06

I dislike Minnie Rose (mainly because I know a few people who refer to their private lady parts as a “mini” so I can’t shake off that connotation!!)

I’m also not a fan of Winter Rose and Autumn Rose because they are too hard to remove from what they described. Doesn’t feel like two names with their own character but rather just a description of a plant!!

I think Mabel and Aubrey are super cute names with Aubrey Rose probably being my favourite!!!

LittleDoritt · 18/08/2019 23:11

Aubrey is a boy's name, is it not?

I love Audrey though!

I'm not really keen on your names. Sorry, different tastes! I would go with Rosa.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:17

I've got to stop being polite about being told it's a boys name.

Same as Tyler.. but many girls are called tyler, or Charlie.

Aubrey is now unisex, when typed into googled there are barely any men that come up with the name Aubrey.

I like it for a girl. I actually wouldnt even dream of calling a boy Aubrey. Confused

Lily2811 · 18/08/2019 23:20

Aubrey Rose is lovely. I don't like any of the others, sorry. Especially autumn rose and winter rose, they sound like candle scents or something.

AverageMummy · 18/08/2019 23:20
  1. Rosalie - quite nice
  2. Mabel Rose - not a fan
  3. Aubrey Rose - so many still hear this as a boys name which put me off but I like it
  4. Minnie Rose terrible - means vagina
  5. Autumn Rose - ok
  6. Winter Rose - ok
  7. Dottie Rose - awful

Others I do love that might appeal:
Audrey Rose
Rosa - beautiful & strong
Dorothy Rose (nn Dottie)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/08/2019 23:20

I love Mabel Rose.

AverageMummy · 18/08/2019 23:22

The name Aubrey has only been used for girls since the 2000s & for boys for generations and generations. So if it would be hard for you when people react it’s probably not the right name.

AHintOfStyle · 18/08/2019 23:24

Aubrey is 100% a male name
Audrey is a female name

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:28

But has been used for girls since the 2000's nonetheless.. therefore is not '100%' a boys name Grin

OP posts:
WinterHare · 18/08/2019 23:29

If you like Aubrey for a girl then go for it. It's your kid after all.

Doesn't mean the rest of us can't let you know it's a boys name no matter what a crappy google search returns Hmm

Rosalie was the least worst from your list. The rest sound contrived.

Crunchymum · 18/08/2019 23:30

What about Rose as a first name?
