Name you loved but it was just too quirky?

Is there a name you didn’t use because it was just too quirky or “out there” but still love?

I loved Starr, Juniper and Skye, DH vetoed! (Don’t even think those are that quirky, tbh.)

DH really loved Dexter.
But I either kept singing the theme to Dexter’s lab (cartoon) or worried he’d turn into Dexter the OCD serial killer

I am a big fan of both those programmes. (Dexter's lab was my all time favourite as a child).

I called my son Dexter in 2016. Better watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't turn into a serial killer just by name association 🧐

Artemis and Persephone were my two favourites but sound awful with our surname. Persephone worked better out of the two but too many people struggle to pronounce it and I didnt want her to be teased.

Scout or Ruan for DD, from two of my favourite books - not particularly out there, but DH wasn't keen.

There is a Ptolemy locally and it does sound a bit wrong, when shouted across a swimming pool.

DS1 is at school with a Cosmo - we did joke that he might have siblings called Hello and Chat.

A friend has a Gertrude, which suits her perfectly.

Dd1 could’ve been Arietty which I still love

Dd2 would’ve been a Stanley if she’d been a boy, it felt ever so ‘out there’ 5 years ago but 10 a penny round here now!

DC3 has had many names vetoed so far including Atticus and Cassius. I adore both but DP having none of it! I’ve also had Astrid and Margot poo-pooed, we have very different tastes in names!

I absolutely adore Iorwerth and Geraint as boys' names but neither DH nor I are Welsh and we live in SE England. I can't condemn our lad to a lifetime of "Sorry, how do you spell/say that?"

Hercules! I absolutely love it but there is no way on earth I could call a boy such a grand name. We went for Conor instead.

I work with children between newborn age to 9 years. So many names listed here that I recognise.

And Dexter is so popular now, not an out there choice at all! Steve would be an out there choice these days

Kizzy- was too much like a cat name, plus not many people know the book 'Roots'.

only on page 4, but just had to say - we used to have a cat called Kizzy!
It came from a tv kids programme in 1970 called Kizzy the didakoi.

We lived in Saudi at the time, she was our cta their, and mum used to stand on back steo and call - Kizz, Kizz kizz kizzy!
Until someone told her that Kizz in arabic is pretty rude

Dylan, Gabriel, Xanthe, Reuben, Aurora, Stella, Poppy, India... All completely normal...

I really like Welsh names and have taught children with some really lovely ones (we are nowhere near Wales). I think my favourite is Iestyn. A name I love but wouldn't have used is Arrietty.
