Can I have a Magnus and a Fergus?

NC for this as it's very outing!

I have two sons, Magnus and Hamish, I love both of their names. I am now pregnant again and totally stuck for names.

We love Fergus (we are in Scotland btw, in case anyone is sensing a theme!) but can I have a Magnus and a Fergus? They are so similar sounding.

If not - any ideas for boys or girls names that would 'go' with my other two? I know some people hate matching set names but we've sort of gone down that road already!

I love you taste in names! Imo yes, you can have a Magnus and a Fergus, just as you can have an Ollie and a Joey - it's the start of the name that matters.

But if not, how about Ruaridh? Alisdair? Aidan?

growlingbear · 19/07/2019 18:49

Callum?

Ginger1982 · 19/07/2019 18:56

@Goforitgirl well they are Scottish so...

PCohle · 19/07/2019 19:04

Ross, Iain, Callum, Euan, Murray?

Ruaridh and Alisdair are both lovely suggestions from a PP.

youllhavehadyourtea · 19/07/2019 19:35

Murdo, Sorley, Torquil

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/07/2019 19:49

I love Flora for a girl too!!

Not so keen on a Magnus and Fergus combo TBH

just too rhyme-y for me.

Lots of lovely suggestions-love Lachlan NN Lockie

Well unfortunately the two children I already have do have scottish names (sort of, Magnus isn't technically a scottish name) so there's no getting away from them sounding 'Scotland the brave' really!

Flora is brilliant and definitely going on the list. We do know one but her parents aren't close friends really.

Ruaridh is one of my favourites for other people, but I'm not scottish myself and I just can't pronounce it properly!

Keep them coming please!

Just use Rory then. I like it too!

growlingbear · 19/07/2019 21:01

Yes, you could just use the similar English name Rory, which is a lovely name.

Barbarafromblackpool · 19/07/2019 21:06

Roderick. Roddy is great.
Alastair.

Elspeth
Mhari

Awrite · 19/07/2019 21:09

Roderick always reminds me of Billy Connolly doing an impression of posh folk yachting at Helensburgh.

Love Roddy though. Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera.

Awrite · 19/07/2019 21:10

Not Scottish but Patrick is a great name.

CrackOn · 19/07/2019 21:12

Fergus is a very ugly name imo.

KondoKonvert · 19/07/2019 21:27

Say what you really think @CrackOn . Don't hold back or sugar coat it Confused

Kaykay06 · 19/07/2019 21:36

Seamus?
Cameron
Fraser
Ross
Alistair

I don’t like fergus sorry but Hamish and magnus are lovely.
Love Persephone and Penelope just now also Eilish not sure that’s the right spelling
Iona
Isobel

Congratulations on your little one and am sure whatever you name them it’ll be lovely CakeFlowers

CrackOn · 19/07/2019 21:39

Well, what would be the point in that @kondokonvert? Presumably op wants people's genuine opinions- if she only wanted to be told it was lovely she'd ask people irl.

FWIW, I see no issue with Fergus and Magnus in terms of similarity, I'd just think that poor Fergus had got the raw end of the deal!

Courtney555 · 19/07/2019 21:43

I know a Scottish family who had Hamish, Angus, (almost identical to your Magnus) and to keep the Scottish theme, third son was William. I think those three go beautifully.

Girls...not too sure what is typically Scottish? Laura? Fiona?

CallMeRachel · 19/07/2019 21:52

But the op didn't even ask for opinions on the name, you've missed the point of this thread and insulted the ops choice of name.Confused

IVflytrap · 19/07/2019 22:10

I think Felix goes well.

Brodie
Robert
Keir
Kester
Leith
Finlay
Arran

Lorna
Rowan
Mirren
Morven
Sorcha
Marsaili
Isobel or Ishbel
Skye
Alba (I know a couple of English ones - might be too on the nose in Scotland?)

17caterpillars1mouse · 19/07/2019 22:19

I think it's fine but I will suggest Malcolm and Struan

For a girl Elspeth?

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/07/2019 22:24

I think it’s doable; if my next baby is a boy then we will be in a similar but not identical dilemma; I’m in Scotland but don’t want to “overdo the tartan” IYSWIM.

I love Magnus, I love Fergus, together...yessssss BUT Feargal rolls better with Magnus and Hamish.

MWestie · 19/07/2019 22:27

Lennox, Oran, Frederick, Jamie, Malcolm, Murray?

Ledehe · 19/07/2019 22:27

Scottish here. Love your boys names. Can I suggest Gregor? Flows nicely with your other boys names and Gs and Rs just sound brilliant in a Scottish accent.

The main problem I find with Scottish girls names is that they are all very popular, especially Island names. Flora was my grannies name and I'd love it if it had a resurgence. I've got a scottish name myself but I very much doubt that will become popular again (it's not senga)

loveandlaughs · 19/07/2019 22:31

I like Duncan and Robbie suggested by pp. Also for a boy like Campbell better than Cameron.

For girls I like

Mhairi
Morven
Catriona
Caireann
