Can I have a Magnus and a Fergus?

NC for this as it's very outing!

I have two sons, Magnus and Hamish, I love both of their names. I am now pregnant again and totally stuck for names.

We love Fergus (we are in Scotland btw, in case anyone is sensing a theme!) but can I have a Magnus and a Fergus? They are so similar sounding.

If not - any ideas for boys or girls names that would 'go' with my other two? I know some people hate matching set names but we've sort of gone down that road already!

Of course, you CAN, but why would you? It sounds terrible together.

I always thought that the popularity of Xander arose because Alexander Armstrong revealed that his mother calls him that. Are there any 15 - 20 year old Xanders out there? Happy to be corrected

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2019 10:23

I teach a couple of Xanders. Am not in Scotland. It is a name I associate with people as posh as Alexander Armstrong. If you are, that's fine! But it definitely isn't a Scots abbreviation. That is not the same as saying there are none in Scotland. There will be. Hopefully, said with a short a sound.

Campbell? Keir?

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2019 10:26

btw , Xander's popularity has been on the rise for a while. January Jones called her son Xander, there's a few film and TV characters called it and a US golfer. I think it's become popular with a certain American set and people who like a name to begin with an X because they perceive it as strong. I think it is a common abbreviation in Germany.

Yes. He is a Xander not a Xaaaaaaander

MrsDimmond · 21/07/2019 10:41

Glad you have managed to get Duncan on the list! And Flora is lovely!

Re Xander I must admit I'd never heard it before Alexander Armstrong and one of the tv Dr twins.

Before them all I knew were Alex, Alec and Sandy as shortenings. I don't think it doesn't have same tone as your other names

MrsDimmond · 21/07/2019 10:42

Oops I managed a double negative there! I don't think it has the same tone as your other names

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/07/2019 10:50

I know a Zander (real name, not a non) which I love. I would maybe not have another -s sound.

Zander or Xander
Robby
Roddy
Jamie
Torin
Oran
William nn Will
Rory

For girls, if you like Heather how about Hazel? I think it's due a comeback. Mhairi, Flora, Katie, Isla, Fiona?

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2019 10:51

Well I'll let you off then banana !!

Middledistancerunner · 21/07/2019 11:03

Fiona has been mentioned a few times - but I can’t think of a Fiona under 35 years old. So it’s definitely due a come back, or to die off completely.
I have a Mhairi, which i think is a lovely name, very very few English people can pronounce it. She gets called Mary a lot.

I love Flora.

Xander sounds very southern England to me. Alec is a lovely name though.

I've posted this before but DD1 and DS have names that have same vowel sound in 1st syllable and end -er. Calling them I'd invariably get the wrong one or both would come. Now they're older they both ignore me & claim they thought I called the other. So for that reason I wouldn't have Magnus and Fergus.
What about Gregor, Blair, Innes, Murdo or Christy (would also work for a girl). Most of DS's friends are called Robbie, Callum, Cameron or Campbell so I'd avoid them.
For girls I love Flora. Also Ailsa, Isobel, Innis,

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2019 11:39

Charlie is a solid name. As in Bonnie Prince.

youllhavehadyourtea · 21/07/2019 12:28

A proper abbreviation in Scotland would be Sandy or Alec.

or Eck. ;)
