Ear!

BusterGonad · 31/05/2019 11:05

I've e only ever heard it pronounced V-ear-ra.

Mammyofasuperbaby · 31/05/2019 11:10

I'd pronounce it as Vee-ra. I'm in the north east and I've never heard of any of the above ways.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2019 11:12

With an ear.

irnbruforlife · 31/05/2019 11:12

im with mammy, im scottish and only ever heard vee-ra. It only has two syllables too right?

lucymegan · 31/05/2019 11:15

Yes two syllables

flowery · 31/05/2019 11:17

Ear. Never heard air.

lucymegan · 31/05/2019 11:19

The v-air-a pronunciation might be how Americans say it. But I've seen a baby at nursery with this too.

V ear ah. The ear bit with almost two very short syllables ee ur.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2019 11:37

I've only ever heard 2 syllables with "ear" in the middle (Londonj

I suspect that this is actually the same as "vee-ra" when you allow for accents. Like the word "veer" also has "ear" in the middle in my accent.

Littlebird88 · 31/05/2019 11:38

vai ra pronounciation i think is eastern european.

lazymare · 31/05/2019 11:42

Veera

It's definitely not one of the old lady names I expected to come back.

flowery · 31/05/2019 11:48

Veer-a/Vear-a both the same.

glitterbiscuits · 31/05/2019 11:52

I've only ever heard Vee rah.

lucymegan · 31/05/2019 11:52

@Littlebird88 oh it could be. V-air-a should sound like Sarah but with a v (obviously Confused)

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2019 11:54

Vee-ruh
It's not a pretty name and will cause 'Allo Vera jokes

littlemeitslyn · 31/05/2019 11:58

Really?

Cookit · 31/05/2019 12:20

South East and only ever heard to rhyme with ear not air.

ThatCurlyGirl · 31/05/2019 12:25

To rhyme with dearer, clearer, nearer etc.

Never heard it another way!

SpeckofStardust · 31/05/2019 12:29

No one says, V-air-a, no one, nope not even here in the USA. If you choose it you either like the name or you don’t, changing it to your own ‘unique’ pronunciation will simply mean your child is in for a life time of correcting everyone.

SundayMorningSun · 31/05/2019 12:32

Vee-ra in English.

Ve-ra (rhymes with Sarah, ish) in other languages - German, Swedish, Russian, etc.

I like it.

DontCallMeShitley · 31/05/2019 12:46

With an 'ear' in England although have heard it pronounced with an 'air' elsewhere.

TV series is with an 'ear' too.

It is one of those old names, the ones I knew were born around 1915 ish so probably due for a comeback, like Iris.

PinaColadaPlease · 31/05/2019 12:47

Ear!

steppemum · 31/05/2019 12:49

with an ear.
But I suspect that the 'ear' sounds different in some accents. I am just trying to imagine it in a NI accent, as I think the vowels would sound different?
So, in principle the same, but will allowance for accent?

MindyStClaire · 31/05/2019 12:49

Vee-ra (like Vera Duckworth!).

I think it's pronounced something like Verra in other languages, but I'd go with Vee-ra in the UK until corrected otherwise.
