Zelda - how 'out there'?

DH and I apparently do not agree on any girl names. I mean ANY. Apart from maybe this one. My only doubts are that it's a bit too off-the-wall. I want to avoid anything top ten/massively popular - but not to the extent of everyone who hears it thinking "you're called what now?!"

I guess I'm less interested in people's opinions (it's always a question of taste, and I definitely LIKE it) than how weird you think it is ( if it's at all possible to distinguish those two things).

So where would you place it on a scale of 1 (Emily/Olivia/simple/classic/boring) to 10 (Hepzibah/Andromeda/unusual/mad)?

I don’t think it’s mad but it’s very much warrior princess to me.

Helspopje · 06/05/2019 19:14

Are you hard core gamers?

ZenNudist · 06/05/2019 19:15

Its a legendary name.

Be perared for the fun to commence

riotlady · 06/05/2019 19:15

I’d place it about a 7, I like it though!

WhoopItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 06/05/2019 19:15

I'd say not unusual at all as it's my. Others name. She loves it and was named after my grandmothers close friend.

WhoopItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 06/05/2019 19:16

*my mothers name!

abcriskringle · 06/05/2019 19:16

DH loves this name so it's on our shortlist if we ever have a girl. It does make me think of the game and also it's one of the aunts on Sabrina the Teenage Witch but it is a cool name and I don't think it's too crazy.

GooodMythicalMorning · 06/05/2019 19:16

Zelda is pretty recognisable as a gamer name and so will probably be asked about quite a lot, but I think its pretty and not too wild. Robin Williams daughter is called Zelda.

Dermymc · 06/05/2019 19:16

Hard-core gamer.... Fine

Anyone else... Bit much

ThisIsTheEndgame · 06/05/2019 19:17

@Faster are you mixed up with Xena?

It's about a 5 on the weirdness scale for me. Very 90s, the Nintendo game and Sabrina the teenage witch's aunt.

Mintypea5 · 06/05/2019 19:18

Makes me think of Sabrina the teenage witch!

I have a friend ages mum is Zelda o always thought it was pretty

Divgirl2 · 06/05/2019 19:18

It's Robin Williams' daughter's name. I'm usually one for traditional names (and absolutely hate the letter Z - irrational I know) but I actually really like it.

I think before it became a gamer thing it was a Jewish name, I could be wrong though.

On your scale i'd rate it an 8 - it's pretty out there but it's a proper name going back at least about 100 years.

TheFaerieQueene · 06/05/2019 19:20

It reminds me of Terrahawks!!

Haworthia · 06/05/2019 19:20

I knew one who would have been born in the late 70s. She was quite prim and dowdy. I was amazed that someone like her had such an out there name!

Biscuitsneeded · 06/05/2019 19:21

IT's fine OP. It's a real name, not one you've made up, therefore it is perfectly OK and hopefully not too frequently used. I'm not a gamer so wouldn't know about those connotations and I guess most people wouldn't either!

Mog6840 · 06/05/2019 19:27

It instantly makes me think of the video game.
It's about a 7 on the weird scale to me.

It sounds as if it should belong in the fantasy genre but those names are becoming more popular now with the likes of game of thrones etc.

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 19:28

Hmmm. Was hoping for more of a Fitzgerald vibe than gaming connotations, so good to know that's where most people's minds go! Sounds like it's not completely crazy at least though!

Mog6840 · 06/05/2019 19:28

I'd add that I've never played video
Games in my life but I still relate it to the video game.

waltersdog · 06/05/2019 19:38

Terra hawks or the bully from Grange Hill

PlatypusLeague · 06/05/2019 19:45

It came about as a nickname for Griselda and reminds me of it. Grizzly, gristle etc. Second connotation would be witches. Oddness rating 8/10.

MumUnderTheMoon · 06/05/2019 19:45

I love it.

PlatypusLeague · 06/05/2019 19:48

@Divgirl2 on the baby name site I was looking at, it says Zelde with an e is Yiddish and means happiness, whereas Zelda is German and from Griselda meaning grey battle or dark battle. To me it's a battleaxe's name.

WhoopItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 06/05/2019 19:50

Ill add for the 'gamer' continuum that my grandmother has never been accused of being a gamer 😂.

Mother born in the 50's, well before the game but was quite pleased when the game came out that there was a princess 'named after her'. Her 'Aunt Zelda' would have been born in the ?30's.

I would have honoured my mother and given it to my daughter as a mn but it felt far too fabulous to be given as a middle name! If you love it go with it!

WhoopItsTheSoundOfThePolice · 06/05/2019 19:50

Also... We're not Jewish

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 06/05/2019 19:52

I don't think it's too out there no. It's 'unusual' rather than 'WTF'

I actually really like and it's easy to spell and pronounce which is a bonus!
