There are some names like Connie and Matilda.... Popular ones that I hate and just don't get.
Any names that are popular you just don't get?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oliver and Olivia. I just find them really ugly!

I think its the O combined with the 'l' and 'v' that does it as I quite like Oscar, which to me is a lot softer. I know they're really popular, and have a number of friends with adorable little ones with these names, I think its just how my brain's wired!

Hamsternauts · 13/03/2019 13:20

Matthew. Ending rhymes with "Phew!'

EssentialHummus · 13/03/2019 13:24

Anything overtly posh - Spencer, Hugo, Joleon, Tarquin, Clarissa, Xanthe.... I find them so OTT and the associations so unpleasant that I assume they must have been meant ironically, which is not a naming practice I endorse!

TreesoftheField · 13/03/2019 13:28

Made it to page 6 before one of my kid's was mentioned!!

NorthernRunner · 13/03/2019 13:28

There are lots of inoffensive names that I dislike, but I think it’s because I work in childcare (and have done for 12yrs) so I’ve heard them a lot;

Maisie
Millie
Ellie/Elle/Ella
Mia/Mya
Lily
Lyla/Lila
Cara/Clara/Carla
Emily
Georgina
Kayleigh/kayley
Lyndsay
Kirsty
Jodie

I love the old fashioned names Edith, Pearl, Florence, Iris, Olive.

I’m not a fan of Countries as Names or Surnames as first names. I also don’t like the use of typically male names for girls, James, Noah, and so on...

Only in some voices! Grin

Do you honestly think that parents would name their kids as a joke or ironically?!Shock

Could it not be that they simply like the name Clarissa or Xanthe?!

@FiddleFaddleDingDong
How do you pronounce the "hew" in Matthew and Phew? I'm in the South East and would pronounce them both the same as "Yew" or "Ewe"

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 13/03/2019 14:40

It's not the hew bit, it's the ph bit! I don't say ma-phew.

123Flopsy · 13/03/2019 14:56

When I say Matthew it definitely rhymes with phew or ewe.

Hamsternauts · 13/03/2019 14:58

Nor do I Confused I said they rhyme, not that they are the same sound!

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 13/03/2019 15:02

Ah okay sorry, I must have speed read!

But what is so awful about Matthew rhyming with phew? Names ending in 'unt' I'd understand.

Hamsternauts · 13/03/2019 15:04

I don't like the sound. That's what this thread is about.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 13/03/2019 15:08

Thanks, chum! Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile

Hamsternauts · 13/03/2019 15:09

Don't mention it. Is your name Matthew?

woodcutbirds · 13/03/2019 15:12

Siobhan and Bernadette. And lots of other Catholic Irish names. they just annoy me for no reason. I know some lovely Siobhans and I love the song Bernadette by Paul Simon but the names themseves are irritating.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 13/03/2019 15:12

No, Matthew is a name I dislike actually. But my name has been mentioned on the thread. I'm fine with that though. Grin

Phew.

Ghostwriter90 · 13/03/2019 15:18

Matthew is a bit of a wet name.

BonBonVoyage · 13/03/2019 15:21

"spiky" names - Stella, Erica, Harriet, Agatha, Ethel

Hayden, Jayden, Cayden, Caelan (sp ?)

The boring Irish girls names of my generation - Aoife, Orla, Caoimhe, Ciara, Sinéad, Siobhán, Niamh so uninspired and yet seriously overused

And of my mother's generation - Mary, Patricia, Angela, Margaret. Why???

GinUnicorn · 13/03/2019 15:23

Nigella.

Utterly hate it.

KateTTC123 · 13/03/2019 15:25

Hester

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 13/03/2019 15:25

Nigella is just awful. Nigella Lawson's sisters got equally awful 'wish you'd been a boy' names.

GinUnicorn · 13/03/2019 15:26

I equally hate Nigel. Yuk

DidYeeAye · 13/03/2019 15:27

I hatr try hard hipster/pretentious names like Arlo , Bodhi and Emmeline
