Scared that they'll use "my" baby name!

I moved to a new area about a year ago and one of my DDs is in Year 1 at the local school.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and there are currently FIVE mums in the class who are also pregnant! They're all due before me, and our babies will all be in the same class for years. At least three of them are having a girl, like me.

DH and I have had our baby name picked out for a loooong time. I'm so worried one of these mums will use it! I'm not really friends with any of them except to say hello.

Aaagghh what would everyone else do if this happened?!

Aww I love "fellow Effie mother"! That's made me smile :) have to say I didn't know that about Amelia - but that's quite funny!

I'm really starting to not care what people think. She's our girl and our first baby together and is very special after miscarrying one on honeymoon of all places.

And no, definitely not Effing...

It’s quite an unusual name, so I wouldn’t worry about it. But anyone else with a slightest more common name sharing the same concern, it’s worth bearing in mind that there are regional variations

My name was not common when I grew up, and became very popular in the late nineties. Although it wasn’t a top ten name when my kids were born, there were 4 in my dd’s nursery class. When I looked at the ONS spreadsheet, it gives you regional breakdowns, (I think just top 10 ) and lo and behold, my name was there for my region.

The information is out there!

Boulardii · 27/02/2019 19:08

Dark greener is an amazing website.

LoopyLoonyLuna · 27/02/2019 19:15

I love the name Effie, super cute but personally I would have it as a shortened version of a longer name. The only Effie I’ve known was short for Elizabeth but it can also be short for Euphemia (ghastly!), Persephone, Seraphina, Josephine,..

stabbybitch · 27/02/2019 19:17

Effie is a nice name.
That darkgreener site is not quite accurate, my DDs name shows 0 baby girls born for the year she was born also the same for my DS.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 27/02/2019 19:21

I know a lovely Effie. She's Greek

RayaJambalaya · 27/02/2019 19:26

@stabbybitch "The ONS does not include baby names with a count of two or less in England and Wales to protect the confidentiality of individuals."

My daughters name was only recorded for the first time in 2017 as there were 5 babies born with her name that year. However, I know there are more with her name before 2017. It's just that they would have been 1 of 2 or the only one born that year.

RayaJambalaya · 27/02/2019 19:27

@stabbybitch I'd love to know their names now! Haha 😂

Crunchymum · 27/02/2019 19:30

@stabbybitch remember the names are always for the previous year. So if you had baby in 2016, the name wouldn't be included until the 2017 stats were released and yes they only include names which were used more than twice.

MeakTiger · 27/02/2019 19:31

I had the same so told everyone the name if we had a boy or girl (we didn’t know the gender). That way we’d made it knoe. to lots of people so could never be accused of copying!

Rainytowngirl · 27/02/2019 19:38

I chose a name for my daughter that I had heard of once ever. Was in London at the time and no close friends had babies. Realised when we moved back to Ireland that the unique name I had picked had been in the top three names in Ireland for the three years around her birth as there had been a revival in Gaelic name popularity!
Use the name you love and if anyone else picks it so be it .
Enjoy every minute of parenthood, it's an incredible rollercoaster !

stabbybitch · 27/02/2019 19:39

Ahh I get it now, thank you.
Not that unusual names but unusual spellings.
Ds name spelled the traditional way has 134 babies named in 2009
Dds name spelled the traditional way has 1066 named in 2008.

I don't actually know anyone with my ds name but do know 2 with dds name one 15years older and 4 years younger.

Dyingforchocolate · 27/02/2019 19:41

When I was pregnant I picked 2 names for dd, her name & a back up plan. Another mum I know was pregnant with twins ( didn't know the sex) and had 2 girls the week before me, and used both my name and backup plan name 😂 I ridiculously cried a bit then used the name any way ( wouldn't have if she were a friend/family but just another mum at playgroup/school I can cope with) and it isn't a big issue. I'm sure you'll be fine with Effie though Smile

Soubriquet · 27/02/2019 19:49

I’ve used quite a common baby name for my dd, yet I’ve not met another one. I know there will be plenty in other areas but so far she’s the only one in her ballet class, school and group of friends.

She’s Molly btw

Effie is a lovely name

choli · 27/02/2019 19:52

Lots of kids in my class had both first and surnames that matched (small village). It caused no confusion and nobody was psychologically scarred or seemed to mind. The Mumsnet obsession with "owning" a name baffles me.

SilverLlama · 27/02/2019 19:58

I like it, but it’s hard to get used to it for a girl. I’m Turkish and Efe (pronounced like Eh-fee) is a very popular Turkish name for boys

Skyejuly · 27/02/2019 19:59

That's my cats name. I love it.

My daughter is Ruby and only one in class yet there are 2 clementines and 2 aurelias?!

Constantlurker · 27/02/2019 20:04

Effie is a flipping gorgeous name and i am hereby stealing it for any future DD i may have!! Congratulations to you, totally get the anxiety but the name is beautiful and it's for her whole life, not just a few years at school!

PartyHatOnADog · 27/02/2019 20:09

I put my DD's name into Darkgreener and it comes up as 0. What does that mean??

Drogonssmile · 27/02/2019 20:14

Kate and Wills nicked DS1s name AND second name in the same order Angry had to completely rethink! Although we did end up using George as his second name.

Drogonssmile · 27/02/2019 20:17

PS I like Effie and totally get the anxiety. It matters to you and therefore it is important to you. Fair enough! I hope you'll get the only Effie in the class. There are three Lucas', three Joshuas and three Jacobs in DS1's class.

RayaJambalaya · 27/02/2019 20:27

@PartyHatOnADog I already said this above but..

"The ONS does not include baby names with a count of two or less in England and Wales to protect the confidentiality of individuals."

My daughters name was only recorded for the first time in 2017 as there were 5 babies born with her name that year. However, I know there are more with her name before 2017. It's just that they would have been 1 of 2 or the only one born that year.

Also it could maybe be that you used a different spelling?

cravingmilkshake · 27/02/2019 20:31

My name for my daughter is Matilda and I am 20 weeks and hope Meghan and Harry don't have her- although- I'm thinking they will have an Alice if they have a girl!
