Shay for a boy - could it sound ‘chavvy’? Do you know any?
Siblings Rafe and Milo, still struggling for a third boy’s name that I like.

I have a list of a few names, not really sure on any! Otis is probably my fave atm from that list.

I much prefer Otis, to be honest. Shay (Shea?) does feel like a completely different style of name to Rafe and Milo (which I love!)

Susannach · 21/02/2019 08:55

I don’t know any Shays or Otises btw

Sexnotgender · 21/02/2019 08:56

I used to work with a Shay, he’d be early 40s I think?

Lovely guy.

seeingdots · 21/02/2019 09:10

I would spell it Shea tbh

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/02/2019 09:12

I love Shay, only known one and he was nice. Ooh and there's Shay Given, he seems once too.

BlueMerchant · 21/02/2019 09:12

I think it matches Rafe and Milo.

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/02/2019 09:17

To me a shay is a cart pulled by a donkey.
Otis is lovely though. How about Rufus ?

Sophronia · 21/02/2019 12:45

I prefer it spelled Shea, although I think Otis goes better with Rafe and Milo.

flowery · 21/02/2019 12:47

I don’t think it goes at all with Rafe and Milo tbh

iklboo · 21/02/2019 13:26

I know a Shay. He's a nice young man. Bit scatty but funny with it.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 21/02/2019 13:28

I have a Shay, always says he wishes it was Seamus though!!
He is the only one I have ever met.
Truly one of a kind imo!!

Slowknitter · 21/02/2019 13:29

The only one I've heard of is Shae (pronounced Shay), a pretty well-known (female prostitute) character in Game of Thrones. I might avoid it because of that tbh.

Wedgiecar58 · 21/02/2019 14:19

I like it, I know a Shay, his mum and dad are irish. He's a bit naughty/cheeky but he is gorgeous looking.

I also think it goes with his siblings names.

Don't spell it Shea as PP have suggested. That connotes shea butter.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 21/02/2019 14:22

Irish so know a few. Short for Seamus, as in Shay Given the footballer. Like it.

flowersaremyfave · 21/02/2019 14:24

I like shay it's different and It goes nicely with your other sons names. Don't look Otis one bit though.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2019 14:26

I always think of it as short for Seamus.

sheldonstwin · 21/02/2019 14:29

Must be me then, it reminds me of Che Guevara, who was actually pretty cool.

KingLooieCatz · 21/02/2019 14:35

I was thinking Che as well, that spelling would go better with the other names but feels more than a little trying hard to be a hipster. Seeing as you ask, my gut reaction to Shay is that it is pretty chavvy and spelt like so is really out of step with the other two names, like Ludovic, Tartufo and Kevin.

Parthenope · 21/02/2019 14:37

It is short for Seamus. It always reminds me of Shay Healy, best known for writing one of Johnny Logan's winning Eurovision songs, which means it codes as an 'old man who writes schmaltz' name for me.

Quintella · 21/02/2019 14:46

Haven't thought of Shay Healy in years. Just googled him and cannot believe he's in his mid 70s! Doesn't look to be in the best of health either. And look at this photo he posted of he and his late wife on their wedding day. What a cool photo, they were quite the hip young Irish couple. I'd say people were scandalised by their outfits! Grin

A shay is a cart to me as well. I like Seamus, though.

Quintella · 21/02/2019 14:48

As for the name itself it's a solid dependable kind of name. Shay would be able to plough a field by hand, have a quick sandwich and then build a table from an old oak tree. They're capable sorts. Rafe and Milo would be the kinds of names your average Shay would think of as being very fancy indeed.

theSnuffster · 21/02/2019 14:49

I know a Chey. Pronounced Shay. His dad is Welsh. I like the name, a bit 'different' without being odd.

Springwalk · 21/02/2019 14:50

Just no.
Not in a million years. Sounds like a gangster rapper, thats fine if that rocks your boat. I am thinking about job prospects.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 21/02/2019 14:51

I know an adult Shaye.
One of the kindest people I think I've ever met. I only associate good things with the name.
