Does the name Maris (meaning of the sea) just make you think of a potato? I’m putting together a list and I really like this name, and the meaning, but wondering if it’s too much of a root vegetable name!

Makes me think of Frasier!

Stinkytoe · 27/01/2019 09:23

Very much makes me think of Frasier

funmummy48 · 27/01/2019 09:23

The first thing that came into my head was "piper". Sorry!

LEMtheoriginal · 27/01/2019 09:23

Not directly but i dont like the sound. Thats just my personal opinion though

Tattybear16 · 27/01/2019 09:24

Your surname isn’t piper is it. If you choose this name be prepared for your child to have the nickname spud. Kids can be evil.

AuntieStella · 27/01/2019 09:24

Yes, I wouid think potato (sorry)

But I think I'd get used to it as a persons name too

SPR1107 · 27/01/2019 09:24

I thought potato before I opened the thread, sorry

Fredathetortoise · 27/01/2019 09:24

Potato, definitely

FruminousBandersnatch · 27/01/2019 09:25

Great for roasting or mashing.

TheRedFox · 27/01/2019 09:29

I'm sorry but I immediately thought "Piper"

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/01/2019 09:30

No not potato. Frasier.

CountessVonBoobs · 27/01/2019 09:31

Potato. Sorry

Notreallyhere2 · 27/01/2019 09:32

Frasier here too

CrazyCrunk · 27/01/2019 09:32

Shame as it's a lovely name. How about Mari or Marisa/Marissa? Carys? Paris...

GooodMythicalMorning · 27/01/2019 09:32

I thought Piper too.

MemoriesOfAnotherFuture · 27/01/2019 09:32

I thought of Frasier. What about Carys?

Topofthehills · 27/01/2019 09:32

I quite like it as a sound.

I live near Maris Lane which the Maris Piper is named after, so I don't think of it as only potatoey iyswim. (It is the location of Waitrose! Grin)

PurpleDaisies · 27/01/2019 09:32

Frasier killed it for me

Figuringitout · 27/01/2019 09:37

I didn’t watch Frasier, so hadn’t known a connection there. DH is firmly in the potato camp!! Oh well, I quite like Meris, (but maybe it sounds too ‘made up’) and Marnie - although with a northern family being called ‘Our Marnie / Armani might be an issue!
Still, it could be a boy!!

Yep! Sorry me too first thing that entered my head was Maris piper!

MrsChollySawcutt · 27/01/2019 09:45

How about Meriel? Think it means shining sea?

AliCanTea · 27/01/2019 10:09

Or Merryn?
Meri is lovely - Latin name meaning sea

EnoughSnowAlready · 27/01/2019 10:38

I immediately thought 'Piper'.

Avocado0nToast · 27/01/2019 10:42

I know someone named this, same meaning, but they spell it Meris - no potato connotations Wink. Lovely name.
