I just searched my own name on mumsnet...

So out of curiosity I searched my own name in the mumsnet search function to see what opinions are on my name as a ‘baby name’.

Turns out I have a very very horrible name that everyone hates!!!

Makes me feel a bit sad. I always thought it was quite nice.

Oh well....

Has anyone else done this?

Susan?

Seahawk80 · 09/01/2019 00:24

Just searched my name and it seems a real marmite name, comments range from love it and it's due a massive resurgence to plain and boring! Funnily enough I then searched DS' name and it was the same kind of love or hate it reaction. One poster said "I honestly would burst out laughing if I heard someone in the supermarket say "DS' name" put that back immediately "! I'll look out for someone sniggering in the aisle next time we go shopping!!

NoMoreMarbles · 09/01/2019 00:25

On the nose! I have always disliked it... I used to dream of being called Rachel or Emma or something more 'normal' rather than an old lady name (my sad life I knowHmmSmile) I'm named after my auntie who died at age 23 before I was born so I would never dream of changing it!

secretmetoo · 09/01/2019 00:26

My name is classic and is making a comeback. I’m very smug, I always did like my name Smile

NoMoreMarbles · 09/01/2019 00:26

I had a friend in school called Cheryl who went by NN Cherry which I thought was pretty cool!

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 09/01/2019 00:29

I didn't know about the baby name finder until now (I just read threads about my name) but according to it, the outlook is quite good and strangely familiar!

Love it-about 95%!
Occupation-I am a film directing interior designer who is a high court judge in her spare time (I love interior design and I love film and I can be quite judgy at times! Blush
I wear-Dolce & Gabanna (I do have a dress and a pair of pants!) Burberry (too preppy for me! Monsoon (?) and Lands End (blergh!)
I shop @-Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose! Fancy!
Biscuits- Duchy Originals and Stem Ginger Organic Wheat -Frees (which I've never tried, but now I want to! Grin

Seahawk80 · 09/01/2019 00:33

@cece I think we have the same name!

Sailorjerrycherry · 09/01/2019 00:34

Mine was agreed on as “an old lady name that should never see the light of day again”. Oh.

Ihavealwaysbeeninstorms · 09/01/2019 00:36

Apparently my name is really common popular these days. The thing is that it was very unusual when I was at school and I found it embarrassing. Then I grew older and learned to love my unusualness but now everywhere I turn, some mum is yelling this at their darling LO. Can't win!

spoon19996 · 09/01/2019 01:01

Ahah mines comes up in "baby names you would never use"

payperview · 09/01/2019 01:03

I searched, but apparently my name has never been considered for a Mumsnet baby!

lostinjapan · 09/01/2019 01:44

I've only got one mention, as a suggestion for a Czech girls name. It has an unusual spelling, and it's not a particularly common name to start with. The closest alternative spelling had a couple of 'I like its' and one 'I don't mind it'. The main thing I learned is that a lot of people hate names beginning with K.

BusterGonad · 09/01/2019 03:11

I'm loving the name finder, my name is considered quite posh I think, if the results are anything to go by, in the MN search bar nothing much comes up!
My sons name has had positive responses too and my husbands is quite unusual so nothing mentioned on MN.

BusterGonad · 09/01/2019 03:16

I tell a lie, my husbands is on here and the responses are funny, I love his name and it really suits him. In fact I liked it before I even knew him! Grin

DulciUke · 09/01/2019 03:30

My name gets viewed with a certain amount of contempt/dismissiveness on these boards too. I wouldn’t worry about it. Had a good friend named Cheryl. My name is fine in my country but seemingly disliked in the U.K. Also had a brother named Kevin...

Paranormalbouquet · 09/01/2019 03:46

My Irish name has been mentioned once but the pronunciation given with it was totally wrong! DD1’s name is polarising, DD2 has a name that people might confuse with a boy (according to MN!). Although Mumsnet generally dislikes Irish names I’ve found.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 09/01/2019 03:51

I've just done it. Quite happy with mine. Apparently it's:

Classic
Timeless
A real name

Thank you mum and dad!

caesio · 09/01/2019 05:45

My names top 2 search results are:

"Old Lady" names which should never see the light of day ever again" thread

"'Old-fashioned' names that might NOT make a come-back?"

Sad
strawberrisc · 09/01/2019 05:56

Both mine and my daughter’s names came out pretty favourably!

AwkwardSquad · 09/01/2019 05:59

Mine doesn’t come up at all. Just checked the baby name finder and it’s not there, which means I get to create my own entry! I think I’ll be a high court judge dressed in Primark.

HeronLanyon · 09/01/2019 06:02

I have done this. Mine comes out as
Classic, beautiful, surprisingly underused, often used as middle name, dated, then sharp divide on how to spell it. My spelling is loved and hated.

HeronLanyon · 09/01/2019 06:05

Awkward. Go for it. I know HCJ who do wear primark (not suits but other things). One J (not HC) I know calla it ‘the mother ship’.
I don’t see it - bought one t shirt there once which was a disaster twisted seams etc.

SocksRock · 09/01/2019 06:05

Well mine was is considered to be a terrible nickname for a longer name. The longer version is said to be pretty and classics but "urgh why you you use THAT as a nickname"

It's actually my full legal name as the short version.

AwkwardSquad · 09/01/2019 06:28

HeronLanyon I don’t get on with it either, and I’m not exactly high maintenance so it’s not that I think I’m above it or anything. I think it’s because it’s too jumbled. But then I like TKMaxx. Dunno!

HeronLanyon · 09/01/2019 06:33

awkward me too. Don’t use tkmaxx often but have found some really good stuff there (after rummaging for ages - I always feel I am in a jumble sale - I kind of like that I suppose)
