So out of curiosity I searched my own name in the mumsnet search function to see what opinions are on my name as a ‘baby name’.

Turns out I have a very very horrible name that everyone hates!!!

Makes me feel a bit sad. I always thought it was quite nice.

Oh well....

Has anyone else done this?

Just looked up mine.
Apparently it's a ridiculous spelling, and people don't know how to pronounce it, and it's too try-hard.

Come to think of it.. I never did get a mug or keyring with my name on it.. jeez thanks mum!

InAPreviousLife · 09/01/2019 20:02

I like this game...I've never really thought much of my name before but according to MN folk it's a 'good looking' name or could be 'someone important' or indeed a classic.

Apparently it's also open to abuse and abbreviated versions are low brow but all in all it's not slated.

There's something inoffensive about me...now to live up to my name not to let the side down Grin

DD1 is common (we know, but didn't at the time of naming)
DD2 is confusing (traditional Welsh name that no one can pronounce...we did run it past people but didn't think to run it past people who can't speak Welsh!)

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 09/01/2019 20:05

Mine is dated and horrible and apparently from the 70's (I was born in the 90's)

NoParticularPattern · 09/01/2019 20:07

I always thought my name was a bit plain. But apparently MN thinks it’s lovely! Suits any age and not overly popular that it’s common. Who knew!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/01/2019 20:11

Yep, everyone hates my name and it was one of those ones featuring high in the "who did you go to school with in the 70s?" threads , along with Sharon, Tracy etc.

BertieDrapper · 09/01/2019 20:16

I have just done a search and in November someone started a thread about my name and some lovely things have been said!!made me So happy! As always disliked my name and usually go by a shortened version..... now thinking I should start using the full version!!!

WhyDidIEatThat · 09/01/2019 20:32

I’ve got a double first name, nobody on MN has anything nice to say about either half of it 😕 it’s more commonly used as a surname in Brazil and Italy, a place name in Sicily, a Portuguese band name and it cropped up recently in a comedy as a sort of stereotypical Consuela-the-maid type character name.

auberbene · 09/01/2019 20:33

I hate my name. It genuinely makes me cringe.

...but it seems like it's a hit on MN GrinGrin

ABitOTT · 09/01/2019 20:40

Hardly any posts with my name mentioned. Generally good but don't care as I like my name.

MissWilmottsGhost · 09/01/2019 20:43

My name is generally considered a bit chavvy.

I couldn't care less really, but I am highly amused as it would upset my hyacinth bucket type DM so much to know this.

If I told her she would probably insist I change it to save her the embarrassment Grin

Ooh good game. Mine is classy, timeless and elegant apparently.
I searched my DD's names and found my own old thread asking for suggestions for a sister for Amelia. One of the suggestions was "Louisa and call her LuLu". Which is weird - we went for Charlotte (Lottie) but we all call her LuLu at home - derived from Lottie LuLu.

FlagFish · 09/01/2019 20:49

My name is thought well of on MN (and I like it too!). My DD’s name is too common though.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 09/01/2019 20:52

My name is almost always described as ‘weak’ and ‘wet’ on baby threads.

Oogle · 09/01/2019 21:03

Ooh mine is Classic, Elegant, mildly posh, classy, beautiful and timeless. Some say a bit dated, very 80s but the general consensus is that it’s a lovely name.

However, the most common shortening, and what everyone calls me, is mostly hated by MNers Grin

Nothisispatrick · 09/01/2019 21:17

I searched DD’s Irish name and it was mostly discussions about pronounciation or too many vowels

Onehellofaride · 10/01/2019 14:46

Really thought my name would be slated but the majority of posters seem to think it’s elegant, classy and pretty!! I am shocked

Onehellofaride · 10/01/2019 14:48

Oogle mine is also very 80s Grin wonder if we have the same name!

WhyDidIEatThat · 10/01/2019 14:48

I searched my name as a hashtag on Instagram last night, can recommend for hours of entertainment

GummyGoddess · 10/01/2019 14:52

Nobody has a child with my name, even the correct spelling of it, let alone my 'special' one! It's a bit 80's.

Nobody likes either of my children's names either, but I don't really care as I dislike a lot of the loved names.

Aquilla · 10/01/2019 14:53

Just don't search for your own kids' names!

2cats2many · 10/01/2019 14:58

Mine produced no search results, which speaks volumes about it's popularity.

SilverySurfer · 10/01/2019 23:22

My name is considered to be old fashioned but not old fashioned enough to be back in fashion, if you see what I mean. It's usually described as horrible and no-one can see it ever being used in the future. Meh, I'll live Grin

ThanosSavedMe · 11/01/2019 09:00

I’ve just had a look and my name is suggested when people are asking for names but no one ever says ‘oooh that’s really lovely’. Admittedly no one has said ‘omg that’s a terrible name’ so I guess it’s ok!

CountFosco · 11/01/2019 09:32

Mine is a MN approved classic name. Mum looked distinctly unimpressed when I told her Grin.

I have 3 DC, all have names from the part of the world I'm from. I got a lot of 'is that a family name?' from people at work. But on MN DSs name ALWAYS appears on the 'cool names for boys' threads which worries me slightly. DD2 has a very unusual name in England which rarely gets suggested and DD1 is considered try hard and pretentious unless you come from the part of the world I come from.
