Sister for Astrid

Hello all,

I’d be really grateful for opinions on the following as names for Astrid Iona’s wee sister !

We love old names. I’m Scottish and DH has Norwegian heritage (distant), we have a Norwegian surname starting with an “Oar” sound.... first names ending in consonants are much easier to say when running into our surname...

Here are our ideas!

Brianna
Arwen
Ramona (DH not fully sold on this...)
Corinne/Coryn
Yvaine
Merryn
Marnie

I think Arwen goes nicely with your daughter’s name

Shazafied · 10/12/2018 20:53

“Ee” sounds as in Marnie are also easy to say with the surname. Can’t bring self to remove Brianna just cos it’s a bit harder work to say the full name though !

Arwen Yvaine ?

The first thing that came into my head as Astrid's sister was Imelda, but that may not work with your surname. I do love Iris too

Alwaysdrama · 10/12/2018 20:56

I vote Marnie from that list.

Shazafied · 10/12/2018 20:57

Oooh yes I LOVE Imelda too ... it’s just you have to actively pause a bit between first name and surname... almost do a little glottal stop, to prevent it running into one long blurry word.
Sadly this probably means Brianna won’t really work.

I do love Arwen... I’m a bit worried that it might smack of Tolkien .... I’m not even a Tolkien fan really . But do love how old and magical it sounds.

Petra in spite of the vowel sound at the end!

wildewillow · 10/12/2018 21:01

Merryn is my favorite from your list. Though I have a very soft spot for Yvaine as well!

Alaaya · 10/12/2018 21:07

Marnie and Brianna are my favourites. Also, I LOVE Astrid. It was one of my favourite names and I'm still sad DH vetoed for DD.

I like Coryn best but I'd spell it Corin Smile

Phebes · 10/12/2018 21:41

Love Arwen and Merryn. Agree the a endings especially are a bit tricky with your surname.

How about Bryher instead of Brianna? Another lovely Cornish name. Or Briony?

Phebes · 10/12/2018 21:42

Or Isolde/Iseult/Yseult!

Grobagsforever · 10/12/2018 21:44

I have an Astrid and her baby sister is called Esmerelda. Astrid is the BEST name ever. Also Nordic DH...

SoMuchToBits · 10/12/2018 21:45

Astrid's sister should be Ingrid.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/12/2018 21:54

What about Muireann?
Or Mhairie?
Elin is pretty too as is Saga but thanks Scandi rather than Norwegian
