Ellis. I know it is unisex but would you think more of a boy or girl if you heard this name?

I know of 2 girls with the name Ellis. Think it’s quite nice

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 05/12/2018 12:10

Ellis = Welsh boy’s name to me.

LipstickTraces · 05/12/2018 13:45

Boys name

iforgotwhatiwasgoingtosay · 05/12/2018 15:27

I think girl as my Best friend growing up was Ellys

RuthW · 05/12/2018 15:48

I know a male and female Ellis. I think of it being female though.

cherrysfortea · 05/12/2018 15:49

I know a girl and a boy called Ellis

Also Ellis Grey is called Ellis from Greys anatomy

Both!

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2018 15:54

But it's not female. There are 10 times more male than female Ellises!

HopeGarden · 05/12/2018 16:01

Boy.

I’ve met several male Ellis’s but not a single female one.

bluebellation · 05/12/2018 16:59

I know an Elice ( pronounced Ellis)

Twelve8Ts · 05/12/2018 17:03

Has quite a feminine sound to it anyway. It’s not exactly a classic boys name.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 05/12/2018 17:45

twelve, it is a traditional Welsh boy’s name

Twelve8Ts · 05/12/2018 19:15

OK so it’s a traditional Welsh (amongst others) name that has a feminine sound to it. It’s not like calling your daughter Dave is my point.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2018 19:18

It is exactly like calling your daughter Dave!

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 05/12/2018 19:51

Girls name

ernjas · 05/12/2018 19:54

@Twelve8Ts @BertrandRussell I don't think it is like calling your daughter Dave Confused given that Ellis is a unisex name!

SylvanianFrenemies · 05/12/2018 19:56

I think girl first, but could be either. Also thought of Ellis Peters (female author).

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2018 20:07

It is objectively a boy's name. A tiny minority of Ellises are girls.

Raintreeap · 05/12/2018 20:16

Boy but I think its nicer on a girl

Twelve8Ts · 05/12/2018 20:39

@ernjas Exactly.

liquidrevolution · 05/12/2018 20:40

Both. I know an American Ellis who is female.

MikeUniformMike · 05/12/2018 20:43

Boy.

3out · 05/12/2018 20:47

I only know one Ellis and she’s a woman

foxtiger · 06/12/2018 09:15

I've heard it used for both but I see it as more of a boys' name for some reason.

marshallzumarubble · 06/12/2018 10:21

It really isn't a proper unisex name given that, looking at the statistics, in 2017 96% of Ellises born were male and 4% were female. This is generally the pattern on all the records since 2000 where the split was 87% boys to 13% girls. Ellis for boys has been in the top 100 (barring a couple of years in the early 2000s when it dropped to 103) since 2000 whereas Ellis for a girl has been outside the top 1000 names for nearly ten years now.

PinkAvocado · 06/12/2018 10:24

Giving a girl a boys’ name does not make it unisex. It’s exactly the same as calling a girl Dave only even fewer people have done that. Yet.
