Ellis. I know it is unisex but would you think more of a boy or girl if you heard this name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ellis is a boy's name.

ohhelpohnoitsa · 04/12/2018 21:20

I know 2 boys and a girl, both pronounced L iss. Not Elise, who I also know! I dont think it sways to masculine or feminine. It suits all the ones I know.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/12/2018 21:30

I have taught many Ellis' and they are all boys

Pompom42 · 04/12/2018 21:35

I think it's both. My DD has it as her middle name.

Joanne721 · 04/12/2018 21:36

boys name

Enidblyton1 · 04/12/2018 21:41

When I read your question, I immediately thought of Ellis being a boys name.

Then I remembered the only person I’ve ever known called Ellis was actually a girl! She would be in her 20s now. Whenever she introduced herself, people always assumed she was called ALICE. A minor irritation, but something to consider if you call a girl Ellis.

PinkAvocado · 04/12/2018 21:43

Boys’. The origin of it certainly seems to be and I’ve never heard of a female Ellis.

SnowyPaws5 · 04/12/2018 21:58

Both equally.

I know of both boy and girl Ellises.

If you're wanting opinions...I love it. Simple, unisex and lovely.

ShadyLady53 · 04/12/2018 22:00

I’ve only ever know girls called Ellis. And brilliant no nonsense little girls they were too!

Triskaidekaphilia · 04/12/2018 22:01

I'd assume boy (because of a video game character tbh) but on reflection it's quite pretty for a girl.

C0untDucku1a · 04/12/2018 22:03

Boy

BertrandRussell · 04/12/2018 22:07

It’s not unisex, it’s a Welsh boy’s name that is sometimes used for girls.

Belindabauer · 04/12/2018 22:11

Boy mainly although it could be either.

E20mom · 04/12/2018 22:11

Boy

Faster · 04/12/2018 22:15

Boys name to me. The two I know were named after a rugby player.

sazzle27 · 04/12/2018 22:32

One of my mates - in her twenties - is called Ellis.
She gets it assumed that she is a boy when answering emails at work etc, but loves her name 👍🏻

imonlyherefortheAIBU · 04/12/2018 23:50

I know boys and girls with this name: I prefer it for a girl actually

imonlyherefortheAIBU · 04/12/2018 23:51

And they're both spelt and said Ellis

mortifiedmama · 05/12/2018 09:20

I know an adult female (20s) Ellis and a toddler male Ellis. So I don't assume! However I think it sounds quite masculine.

firstbrightday · 05/12/2018 09:24

It's funny, I only know girls with that name but I pictured a boy when I read this.

Shadow1234 · 05/12/2018 10:48

I know a young girl of 17 called Ellis - but I like it for a girl or boy.

Astronica · 05/12/2018 11:16

Also makes me think of Emily Bronte. I assume it's usually a boy, but I would want to check as it could be either.

BertrandRussell · 05/12/2018 11:39

It's overwhelmingly a boy's name. Only 100 or so girls a year.

Why do people think it's OK to give girl's boy's names when they would' dream of doing the other way round?

Icklepup · 05/12/2018 11:47

Boy but in Germany Alice sounds even more like Ellis and vice versa.

Cosmoa · 05/12/2018 11:51

Completely a girls name to me! I don't know any boys names Ellis but it's my sisters name and I know a baby girl called Ellis also ❤️
