Thea.

I've recently heard the name Thea, and it sounds so lovely and mystical. However, I've heard that it's been rapidly gaining popularity over the last few years, which worries me because I don't want a name that will be eventually be common. I'm not searching for a name that's ultra rare, but I think it's nicer to have a slightly unique name. What do you guys think?

I know two. One adult, one child. Adults full name is Alethea

Zoflorabore · 01/12/2018 07:59

I know one Thea and she is 18, it's a gorgeous name.

I have an almost 16yr old Oliver and thought it was very unusual in 2003! Now there are bloody thousands of them.
Ds went right through primary being the only Oliver and is now in Year 11 and doesn't know another in his school which is big.

If you love the name then go with your gut instinct. My poor ds was named after my mum's friend's cat Grin

Yes heard of a few people and a dog called Thea.
Personally I'd lengthen it with Thea as the shortened version, theophania would be my preferred longer name but as pp have pointed out there are others

ZenNudist · 01/12/2018 08:13

I know an 8yo said Thee-ah

No way to tell if it will become popular

CountFosco · 01/12/2018 08:18

, both pronounced “Fear” by all their peers because kids that age can’t say “Th”.

Or 'r'. Move to Scotland, it sounds nothing like fear there!

Check out the stats? Dark Greener names website is based on ONS data and will give you the trends too, a very useful tool. For the record I've no idea how popular it is. I know one toddler with the name. I always thought it was pronounced Taya, and was disappointed to realise it is thee-ya. There is a character called Thea in the series Arrow, which could have triggered a trend.

slappinthebass · 01/12/2018 08:42

According to Dark Greener, yes it is becoming very popular. It's shot up from 225-53 in 4 years.

Bananacentral · 01/12/2018 08:53

Love it. It may be more popular now than before (and more popular in America) because of The Arrow tv show where there is a Thea.

slappinthebass · 01/12/2018 09:20

@Zoflorabore Oliver was number 6 in the U.K. Name charts in 2003.

Zoflorabore · 01/12/2018 10:21

Wow i didn't know that :) thanks.
Wonders where they all are though....

MrsStrowman · 02/12/2018 10:09

I know two, one is the daughter of a friend (4YO) the other is the daughter of a colleague (almost 3YO). Both pronounced Thee-ah , or Feeya (we live in Essex)

MeganJ93 · 02/12/2018 14:46

It's not really popular at the moment but I'm definitely coming across it more and more online so it's definitely on the rise. It's a pretty name.

Scissor · 02/12/2018 15:00

There were 2 in my daughter's class and she's now 21. She loves it though.

flissfloss65 · 02/12/2018 15:36

I love the name and fave never met a Thea. I would definitely think how the Th section is said in your area. Th ea is great but F ea not so good.

ratherbeshowjumping · 04/12/2018 09:23

I went to school with a Dorothea nn Thea - she would now be 25/26.

She was the only one I knew until 3/4 years ago - I now know 5 under the age of 6.

slappinthebass · 04/12/2018 23:06

@Zoflorabore I think these days the variation of names is far greater than when we were kids, so there are less of the number 1 name. There was always several in each class of the most popular name when I was in school. Whereas now with top 10 names you are more likely to get one in each year group.

tryinganewname · 05/12/2018 20:05

Ours was also inspired from the Arrow character too Grin

MummyBearRose · 05/12/2018 21:59

Thea is amazing! it's on my baby list😍
