Thea.

I've recently heard the name Thea, and it sounds so lovely and mystical. However, I've heard that it's been rapidly gaining popularity over the last few years, which worries me because I don't want a name that will be eventually be common. I'm not searching for a name that's ultra rare, but I think it's nicer to have a slightly unique name. What do you guys think?

I prefer Theadora, then she can be called Thea or Dora.

stressedtiredbuthappy · 23/11/2018 21:46

A Thea and a Theodore in my dds room at nursery. 2-3 year olds.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 23/11/2018 21:48

I know one. She's 5. It's lovely.

Moominfan · 23/11/2018 21:57

I love Thea always thought of it as a nn for Athena

So many nice comments! You guys are too kindGrin Apparently it really is becoming more popular for unknown reasons. I do agree with the opinion that you never know when a random name will become popular, so just stick with one that you love

There's also a character in Haunting of Hill House called Theodora - Theo, for short.

Ca55andraMortmain · 24/11/2018 07:24

I have a three year old Thea. When she was born I had never met another one (we heard the name on the show Arrow and loved it). Three years later and I've met quite a few baby Theas. In fact in a baby massage class recently with Dd2, of 5 baby girls, two were called Thea. It's lovely but it is getting popular (which I am gutted about!)

hoping2018 · 24/11/2018 08:05

I thought it was fairly popular at the moment! And would predict it to become super popular - it's a lovely name though!

bridgetreilly · 24/11/2018 09:19

Dorothea is one of my very favourite names ever. I have heard Thea a bit in the last few years, but I doubt it will ever be super-common.

MikeUniformMike · 24/11/2018 13:23

It's very popular. Mentioned on here a lot. Will get pronounced as Fear.

LaDaronne · 24/11/2018 16:39

I know three under the age of five.

Inertia · 24/11/2018 16:55

It’s a lovely name, I know of a couple. There are several very popular names that rhyme with Thea , however- think Mia/ Nia/ Sophia/ Maria/ Lia/ Tia/ Leah / Pia .

Astronica · 25/11/2018 08:01

In 2017 Thea was number 53 in the UK top 100 girls names. It's also in the top 100 in Australia where I live. I assume it's increasing in popularity.

BikeRunSki · 25/11/2018 08:07

I know one, is is 9.

Tentomidnight · 25/11/2018 08:14

I know 2 under 4s called Thea.
Lovely name though.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/11/2018 08:16

I think old ladies - Theodora.

Booboostwo · 25/11/2018 08:33

It also means Goddess in Greek, pronounced Thay—a.

Dorabean · 25/11/2018 08:36

I love it. It's my sisters name and she is 29 now!

ForAMinuteThere · 25/11/2018 12:33

I know of three born recently in our very small local area. It's lovely but does seem to be on the up.

I don't think it will ever be common though.

deptfordgirl · 25/11/2018 13:16

I know a few. Some pronounce it The-a and one Tay-a. It's lovely though and hardly common.

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2018 13:24

I've never come across anyone with the name in real life, but there's loads of love for it on MN so it might well be increasing in popularity.

I know you didn't ask for opinions & everyone else on here seems to love it, but I find it a very weak sounding name, there's something lispy & insubstantial about it which I don't like. And in some parts of the country it'll get pronounced 'fear', which really isn't good.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 01/12/2018 07:17

I like it. I don’t know any

Obamallama · 01/12/2018 07:21

I know a five year old and a three year old both called Thea, both pronounced “Fear” by all their peers because kids that age can’t say “Th”.

BlueUggs · 01/12/2018 07:42

I know two - a 7-8 year old (Theodora) and an older girl - early twenties. It's a lovely name.

Wigeon · 01/12/2018 07:50

I know a baby Thea. It has massively spiked in popularity - you can see on names.darkgreener.com/#thea - gone up from 470th most popular in 1996 to 53rd in 2017. Nice name though.
