Mira

The name has so many good meanings, and I love the simplicity of it. I pronounce it as Mee-rah. And yes, I am aware of all the negative and weird associations that some people happen to have with the name (ex. Hindley, the shower company..), but I think as long as the name is not too out there and enough people use it, it'll probably be ok Grin
So do you know any Miras? What do you think of the name itself? I think it's beautiful, but I want to know what other people think of when they hear it ;) Thank you so much!

I agree that people will tend to pronounce Melia with the emphasis on the Me sound (as Amelia is such a well known name).

I would avoid Mia / Maya personally as it's so popular around here!

How about Miriam?

TrippingTheVelvet · 03/11/2018 08:31

I do and she is lovely.

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 08:35

Miriam one of my fave names. Really lovely mix of pretty strong unusualish classic.

DammitOedipus · 03/11/2018 08:36

I like the name. I'd pronounce it Mee-ra like you, so no association to serial killers. I didn't realise Mira are a kind of showers.

If you like it, use it!

Novemberrun · 03/11/2018 08:51

Obviously I did Heron

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 08:54

Yes apols for suggesting it !

Stormwhale · 03/11/2018 08:56

Yes she was a lovely 40 odd year old woman, originally from Romania, working in Cyprus as a make up artist.

Harebellmeadow · 03/11/2018 08:58

I know two - but Mira is quite popular in Germany and pronounced Meerah. I think it stems from Miracle. Very refined and lovely name.

DuckofDoom · 03/11/2018 11:28

I would never have connected Mira to Myra, especially since they’re pronounced so differently. Maybe if you’re near Manchester it may raise eyebrows, but I think they’re different enough names.

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 11:30

But when I see Mira I hear internally Myra - that’s my first pronunciation of Mira. I need to channel my inner Italian accent a bit moora to get meera.

nocluenoidea · 03/11/2018 11:32

Why would it remind people of Myra? It's pronounced completely differently? I think Mira (Meer-ra) is a beautiful name and we had it on the list for DD2

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 11:38

For me it must be because it contains the name Ira. So I see that and fluff the whole thing. I think I am not alone in finding it oddly difficult. Apologies to all miras and those connected here. I will try to improva.

daisypond · 03/11/2018 12:56

Mira is fine. I don't know any. It doesn't sound like Myra, and it has no connections with it to my mind. I don't think of showers either. I do think of the Spanish for "look", but that's about it.

Rimspector · 03/11/2018 13:03

I know a Maira - pronounced My-Ra.

BakedBeans47 · 03/11/2018 13:07

I don’t really like it personally and I can see the Myra connotation but if it was pronounced Mira it’s probably OK.

As an aside I went to school with a girl so born early/mid 70s called Myra. You do have to wonder what the fuck her parents were on as it was only a few years since Myra Hindley was imprisoned and the name’s had negative connotations since.

RavenWings · 03/11/2018 13:09

Melia is pretty but I think it blends into the hordes of Amelias unfortunately.

I like Mira but I can see the Hindley issue. What about Moira?

GoodJanet · 03/11/2018 13:12

I went to school with a Meera (pronounced Meer-ruh). She was either Indian or Sri Lankan though - it’s not a name I’d expect a white child to have.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 03/11/2018 13:23

Yes pronounced meer-rah and I have never made the association with Myra hindley until this thread. Myra is a completely different name with different origins and is pronounced differently.

Glumglowworm · 03/11/2018 18:36

I know a girl called Mira (meera) lovely child, and I never once thought of serial killers

bridgetreilly · 03/11/2018 19:33

I would not associate Mira with Myra Hindley at all. Different spelling, different pronunciation, different name.

rainbowquack · 03/11/2018 23:01

Melia makes me think of a melon?

sadsadsady · 03/11/2018 23:07

I know a Meira. Said the same.

Thank you for the great feedback! I'm sorry to say that I still can't decide whether I would use this name or Melia, as the comments about the name Mira went from "negative" to "quite positive" in the span of two days :D I plan on starting a new thread with the same topic, just to see if the name Melia is more popular Smile If you want to share your thoughts, please show!

Would you consider malia ? That’s a great name.... melia is awful imo

AuntieStella · 04/11/2018 08:16

Mira is a very normal Eastern European name.

If you live in a diverse area, there'll be no problems with pronunciation.

I like it (guessing the root meaning is 'peace')
