Mira

The name has so many good meanings, and I love the simplicity of it. I pronounce it as Mee-rah. And yes, I am aware of all the negative and weird associations that some people happen to have with the name (ex. Hindley, the shower company..), but I think as long as the name is not too out there and enough people use it, it'll probably be ok Grin
So do you know any Miras? What do you think of the name itself? I think it's beautiful, but I want to know what other people think of when they hear it ;) Thank you so much!

I know a baby Amira. Do you like that? Otherwise, Mira is fine, I'd say.

rainbowquack · 03/11/2018 05:23

One of my best friends is called Amira

Alfie190 · 03/11/2018 05:26

I think most people would pronounce Mira as, well, Mira. Not Mee-rah. So you would be constantly correcting people. Don’t think I would pick it.

Wow lots of contradicting comments here. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the honesty. I do agree that when pronounced like Meera the name will be ok, but I will be correcting people a lot if someone calls her Mir-ra. The spelling of Mira itself is a bit confusing I guess :(

On a side note, I'm curious of your opinions on Melia. It's on my list right now and I think it's quite pretty (it also starts with an M, which is my favorite alphabet letter). The emphasis will be on the "lia" part, so like "Me-Lee-A". Any thoughts?

Coldhandscoldheart · 03/11/2018 06:13

Oh. It’s pretty, but I think in the uk people will pronounce it with the emphasis on the Me. Like the end of Amelia.

Alfie190 · 03/11/2018 06:13

I would pronounce Melia as you have indicated. I see it as a surname though, because that is how I have only seen it used previously. Not that there is anything wrong with that though.

whiteroseredrose · 03/11/2018 06:16

DD has a lovely friend Mira pronounced Meera. Never occurred to me to think of showers or Myra Hindley.

Melia may have to keep correcting pronunciation though. My first assumption would be Melly-ah.

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2018 06:16

I knew a very grumpy old lady with this name

olderthanyouthink · 03/11/2018 06:37

I would think of showers.

For what it's worth, I know the name Myra hindley but wouldn't think of it (I don't know the details of the case oh the top of my head, I think MN is why I know at all tbh), I'm young (23) and her peers will probably be less aware than me. It's just the older adults I think that would make the connection.

surroundedbyblondes · 03/11/2018 06:52

My DD has a friend called Mira (pronounced Meera). She is ten years old, feisty, brave, funny and kind. Her mum is scandinavian and her dad is (I think) southern-european. She is utterly gorgeous with dark eyes and olive skin.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 03/11/2018 06:55

Yes i know one

I like Amira better

Boglin · 03/11/2018 06:57

I know 2 Miras - one is Slovakian and one is English. Both pronounced like Meera and a totally different name in my mind to Myra.

EthelHallowsBroomstick · 03/11/2018 06:57

It's a shower to me, sorry. Not so much Hindley if you're planning it to be pronounced Meera, that makes me think of Meera Syal, who I like!

BlancheM · 03/11/2018 07:00

I didn't know it was a shower brand and it's a different name to Myra. If anything, I'd think it's short for Amira or Samira and same with Melia, for Amelia.

LeeMiller · 03/11/2018 07:00

Mira pronounced Meera is nice, pronounced Myra I just think Hindley.

Melia I'd guess Melly+ a, it reminds me of Melania Trump.

Mia, Mina, Maya, Marta, Mirella, Mila ?

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 07:22

I know an elderly Myra named before the Hindley connection. When I met her I stupidly couldn’t help (or wasn’t quick enough to stop it) saying ‘oh like Myra Hindley’. It was such a surprise to hear the name (she spelled it it for me Unasked) that I couldn’t help but say that. She laughed and said yes but it must be tiring for her. Not sure different spelling/pronounciation will completely avoid this.

I find Mira spelling really difficult as I have no idea how to pronounce it - I know one (slightly young child) and alsways have internal quandary before I say her name frequently wrongly but this may just be my own problem ?

Novemberrun · 03/11/2018 07:26

Foreigner here. Had never heard of Myra. I like the name.

TatianaLarina · 03/11/2018 07:31

I know a Meera - it’s an Indian name - very pretty.

Ilovedotcotton · 03/11/2018 07:32

I know two Miras.

One is pronounced like Myra and the other Meera.

TatianaLarina · 03/11/2018 07:32

Also Amira and Mirabai.

In French there’s Mirabeau.

junebirthdaygirl · 03/11/2018 07:34

In lreland its often spelt Moyra or Moira ..first bit rhymes with boy/ toy..then ra. Its a beautiful name.

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 07:41

I like moira (which iOS seems not to recognise as a name !?) a LOT. But I know a lovely Moira which always helps

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 07:46

Novemberrun - a quick google will explain why those of us in the uk have strong and negative connections with Myra. I often think this unwitting naming without realising other countries collective experience is interesting.
Slightly connected I apparently look almost identical to some french actress/tv personality has made being in France very interesting at times. Have no idea who this is (speak very little french) and tend not to go there much at all partly because of this. Have had people take my photo, approach me excitedly etc. Happens every now and then in Spain. Elsewhere I seem to be ok being me. My dp hates it when it happens too. Confused

HeronLanyon · 03/11/2018 08:02

I will add that the said actress/presenter is clearly not in the category of ‘ravishing beautiful french woman’ Grin felt there may have been perceived boast there.
