Rhea is pronounced Ree-a as far as I know so I’d take that off your list.

BiologyMatters · 26/10/2018 07:05

Id say rhae as ray. If you want raya you're safest going with raya.

LovelyBranches · 26/10/2018 07:06

I would go with Raya. It’s not a name i’ve heard before but that’s how i’d spell it if someone said it to me

Escolar · 26/10/2018 07:08

I haven't heard of this name, but from your list I'd say Raya. It's an unusual name anyway so I think the silent h would only add confusion!

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:09

@Sexnotgender Iv heard it pronounced both ways but understand it'll be more commonly said as Ree-a.... which led me to my post.

Thanks

I’d pronounce Rhae as Ray. Rhea is Ree-a. If you want it pronounced Ray-a I would spell it Raya.

Veterinari · 26/10/2018 07:10

You can’t just put letters together in any order and assume they’ll be pronounced how you wish.

There’s no system where Rhae is pronounced Raya - the letter combination just does not produce those sounds, Rhae would be pronounced Ray.

If you want the sound Raya, use that spelling

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:10

Thanks ladies...

Iv a boy called Rafe ( Ray-f) so I'm used to explaining the name lol- I'm not for the traditional

Veterinari · 26/10/2018 07:12

Agree Rhea is Ree-a
The spelling Rhe does not produce the sound Ray, so Rhea cannot be Raya

olympicsrock · 26/10/2018 07:14

What nationality/language is this name? That will dictate the spelling

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:15

@olympicsrock - comes from Greek mythology xx

BertrandRussell · 26/10/2018 07:16

But Rafe is a very obvious spelling of the sound Ray-f. Most people will probably get it right.

Rhae just isn’t a spelling of the sound Raya. Nobody will get it right- ever. Which will be very boring for her as she goes through life.

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:17

What about Rayah?

OP posts:
Avegemitesandwich · 26/10/2018 07:19

If I saw Rhae write down, I would assume it was 'Ray' and that the parents were big Game of Thrones fans.

WinkysTeatowel · 26/10/2018 07:19

Rafe & Raya are very similar...

@WinkysTeatowel - I know... kinda the point for us.

OP posts:
kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:20

@Avegemitesandwich ooo never seen game of thrones.. is there a Raya in it?

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 26/10/2018 07:22

There is a Rhea in Greek mythology.

There is a Rhae in Game of Thrones.

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:23

Think the spelling Rayah is probably the safe bet.. yes?

OP posts:
BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 26/10/2018 07:26

Raya is easily the better option I think

Happyandshiney · 26/10/2018 07:27

I don’t mean to be rude OP, but why would you want you children’s names to be similar?

They will be individuals with their own traits and personality.

Easily confused names aren’t really a great idea eg shouting “stop” to a child who is doing something dangerous. Better for it to be clear which child.

Plus as Rafe gets older his friends might call him Ray as a nickname. As might Raya’s.

It seems needlessly confusing.

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:27

Yes hubbie agreed Raya too... don't know why I feel the need to put a random H in there somewhere hahaha

OP posts:
Happyandshiney · 26/10/2018 07:28

Rayah might get pronounced
Ray-yah.

Raya is clearest.

kmreeve · 26/10/2018 07:29

@Happyandshiney I understand it's not a method for everyone- our boy is much older so not an issue in our opinion- but thank you for another perspective xx
