Kathryn?

We're having a girl in December, and for as long as I can remember I've wanted the name Kathryn if I had a daughter. It's only since we found out the gender and I mentioned the name that I've had a few bad reactions to it - from a colleague saying it's boring, to my mum who said it's too big a name for a little baby!

I'm kicking myself for saying anything to anyone, I should have just kept quiet until she was here.

My DH really likes it too, but maybe that's because I've gone on about it so much to him that he's conditioned 😉

Is it really that bad a name in peoples opinion? And do you think it will go with the name Nathan (our DS1)?

I think its a lovely name! I personally prefer Catherine but thats just personal choice.
It was one of my name choices too but I ended up with 3 boys.

I love it (slightlyrefer the Katherine spelling though). You're naming an adult woman, not just a little baby. There are lots of possible nicknames - Kate, Katie, kitty, Kat, Katia, Kathy etc if you want something shorter.

It's a classic name which was boring in the sense of popular for my generation (1980s) but will stand out in the sea of Evies, Avas and Islas being born now.

I love Kathryn. I know 3 of different ages although one goes by Katy. Gorgeous name!

Honestly ... iv made the mistake of telling people our name choices and the truth is unless its something that person has on a list that suits them people generally always have something to say about names.

The most important thing is that you and DH love it!! ... dont mention it anymore to anybody else and when they ask just respond "we haven't got it set and to be honest talking to people just confused the situation so keeping options to ourselves"

When baby is here nobody will say a bad word about her name and she wont be boring or too little for it because she will be her!! and if her name is Kathryn then she will be Baby Kathryn who grandparents adore and co workers wont even see!!

Lovely name and spelling. Very versatile for nicknames too. Also, it's classic rather than of a certain time - the 2000s-10s have been full of Evie, Ava, Ellie, Lily etc.

I like it! Have a 14 year old Catherine and I think she's the only one in the school. We originally liked the spelling your way, but changed our minds for reasons I can't remember now....possibly having to explain the spelling more..."with K and a Y"

Kathryn is a lovely name, go for it.

Cute name but I prefer the spelling Katharine but I think that's cos of Katharine Hepburn who I adore. Kate and Katy are great nicknames as well, my youngest sister is called Katy and I've always favoured that spelling.

It’s my name and my spelling 😁 used to dislike not being able to find a personalised pencil as a child 😂😂😂 but don’t think that’s as much of an issue these days!

I love the name in all its forms and spellings. I have an 11yo Catherine, although she goes by Kat or Katie most of the time (she always says that Catherine is her alter-ego for when she needs to be brave or confident! ). I also got mixed reactions to the full name, but not to Katie or Kat.

It's a lovely classic name that isnt too popular though your spelling is my least favourite. I like that it has lots of nn options too especially Kitty or Kit though I also like Katie

That's my name but I'm a catherine, seems strange to me to see it spelt your way.

Honestly as a teen I hated the name my friends were all Ellie's, Nicole's, Kelly's etc and to be it sounded old fashioned but now I really like it

You aren't naming a baby, you're naming a person! So Kathryn is a perfectly good choice.

My favourite. So versatile and the spelling is so pretty. My PGCE student spelt her name like that last year and she was lovely.

Love it. I wanted Kathryn as a middle name for our DD but went with Catherine as that's MILs name and apparently it would've caused issues not to use her spelling 🙄

From the (changed) user name, you can see I’m a Kathryn.

As a child, I was called Katy, then as I grew older, I became Kate.

I quite like the flexibility of my name and the K and Y spelling was to fit in with my family name.

Anyone with the name Kathryn, irrespective of spelling will always need to spell it out - but I’ve never really minded.

One plus is although the name is rarely in fashion, it is also never dated and is too “big” a name to be co-opted by a dodgy character on TV.

I love Catherine. Its pretty, classic and not too common. There are also lots of nickname potential. It's my mum's name so on my shortlist if I have a girl. Not too keen on the spelling you chose. Katherine or Catherine is nicer imo. X
