Kathryn?

We're having a girl in December, and for as long as I can remember I've wanted the name Kathryn if I had a daughter. It's only since we found out the gender and I mentioned the name that I've had a few bad reactions to it - from a colleague saying it's boring, to my mum who said it's too big a name for a little baby!

I'm kicking myself for saying anything to anyone, I should have just kept quiet until she was here.

My DH really likes it too, but maybe that's because I've gone on about it so much to him that he's conditioned 😉

Is it really that bad a name in peoples opinion? And do you think it will go with the name Nathan (our DS1)?

Thanks x

I love the name and the spelling - but it's how my sister's name is spelled so I'm probably biased.

madeoficecream · 09/10/2018 18:38

I think its a lovely name.
There will always be someone who dislikes any name you choose.
If you tell people the name you have chosen before the baby is born they will think its open for discussion!!

SemperIdem · 09/10/2018 19:33

Lovely name, but not spelt that way.

Katharine or Catherine are both nicer spellings.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/10/2018 19:36

I think it's lovely, my favourite spelling of the name too.

cptartapp · 09/10/2018 19:54

Lovely name but prefer it spelt Catherine.

ZebraKid71 · 09/10/2018 20:01

My best friend is a a Kathryn. She was known as Katy as a child now generally goes by Kat

I prefer this spelling but she always says Kathryn with a K and a Y when anyone is writing her name.

GunpowderGelatine · 09/10/2018 20:13

I love it but I prefer Catherine spelling

daisypond · 09/10/2018 20:16

It's a lovely name. I prefer one of the other spellings too, but Kathryn is fine and a normal variant.

Sakura7 · 09/10/2018 20:19

My middle name is Catherine and I always wished it was my first name. I like your spelling too. It's a name that works at any age.

Giving a cutesy childish name doesn't do the kid any favours once they become an adult and want to be taken seriously!

Sunflower321 · 09/10/2018 20:41

There are way too many spellings for this name Katharine, Catherine, Kathryn, Katherine etc

It might become annoying to have to spell out the name throughout her life!?

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2018 20:58

I love it. The one I know went by Katy as a child.

kikidoyouloveme · 09/10/2018 21:11

Too outdated for my liking

3in4years · 09/10/2018 23:56

I love it.

Sophronia · 09/10/2018 23:57

It’s a lovely name. Classic but underused nowadays.

Kokeshi123 · 10/10/2018 03:46

It's a great name. Ignore the naysayers! I prefer the "-ine" spellings, but I don't think the "yn" spelling is wrong either.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 10/10/2018 03:50

We have a Katherine. She’s mostly Katie but also Kate and obviously will have lots of choices for shortening when she’s older. I love it. Don’t worry about what other people think though!

IdaBWells · 10/10/2018 04:45

Catherine is a beautiful name and totally classic which never goes out of style.

Hellywelly10 · 10/10/2018 05:03

Love the name, hate the spelling.

ingenvillvetavardukoptdintroja · 10/10/2018 05:09

It's my mum's name and my niece is named after her but called Katie. Lots of options for shortening s.

mathanxiety · 10/10/2018 06:19

It's a fabulous name, and I don't know why but I personally prefer that spelling over all the other versions.

People who tell you it's too big a name for a baby forget that the baby will spend perhaps 7-9 decades of her life as an adult.

Not boring at all, and goes nicely with Nathan. I would just caution you to avoid 'Nate and Kate' as NNs..

Sunflower321 · 10/10/2018 06:54

Nate and Kate Grin

keiratwiceknightly · 10/10/2018 06:58

I've got a Catherine known as Cassie. Great name.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/10/2018 12:09

I love Kathryn, and this is my favoured spelling.
It's also one of my names.😄

ceecee32 · 10/10/2018 13:25

That's my name and spelling. Love it

MrsFionaCharming · 11/10/2018 15:54

I love it, and think the y makes it look more elegant when written than other versions. I prefer words which have something below the line.
