I really like both these names for girls-
Opinions on both? Which one sounds better?

Opal is quite nice, Onyx is strange!

Sungura · 25/09/2018 21:43

Opal. It's an old-fashioned, feminine name that'll grow with your child. Onyx sounds like a cat's or dog's name to me.

Shadow1234 · 25/09/2018 21:43

Agree with above.

DaniC18 · 25/09/2018 22:32

I prefer Opal. It's a lot prettier and looks better written down x

DramaAlpaca · 25/09/2018 22:36

Opal sounds better.

Lamdalipa · 25/09/2018 22:37

Opel, if you are over 35, is a slightly shit car.

Hernamewasl0la · 25/09/2018 22:38

Neither

Elephantinacravat · 25/09/2018 22:40

Neither, but if you must, Opal.

LeeMiller · 25/09/2018 23:22

Opal. When I see Onyx written down I think 'oinks'.

Runningishard · 25/09/2018 23:25

Both stripper names. Opal is my birthstone but even so

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 25/09/2018 23:25

Opal - because I had a friend by that name when I was a child!

Growingboys · 25/09/2018 23:27

Neither

CherryMaraschino · 25/09/2018 23:29

I rather like Opal. Know a fair few black cats named Onyx.

foofooyeah · 25/09/2018 23:38

Onyx is a dog's name .... opal? Sorry not keen. Emerald?

AlliKaneErikson · 25/09/2018 23:53

I think I said on another thread I know a lovely girl called Onyx so I have positive associations with the name.

UnconsideredTrifles · 26/09/2018 00:15

It may not matter much in your child's generation, but the immediate association for me is the Pokemon onyx, which is a giant snake made of boulders...

LydiaLunch7 · 26/09/2018 00:23

Onyx is definitely a pokemon Grin

ColinsVeryJolly · 26/09/2018 00:46

Onyx sounds like a dodgy market stall aftershave

Opal feels like it should be nice but there’s something weird about it that just makes it wrong for a name.

newroundhere · 26/09/2018 00:49

I prefer Opal BUT it's traditionally thought of as being an unlucky stone so that might put me off.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 00:52

Neither. But if you absolutely must (and I can't think why given there a gazillion alternatives) Opal. Onyx is terrible.

Blameanamechange · 26/09/2018 00:57

Isnt an onyx a type of antelope? And Opal sounds like someones granny or those sweets that used to be called opal fruits! (now called starburst)

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 00:58

It's an old-fashioned, feminine name that'll grow with your child

Is it a name? I've come across all of Pearl, Ruby, Beryl, Coral, Crystal, Amber, Jade, Jasper but not an Opal.

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 01:01

Isnt an onyx a type of antelope?

It's an oryx - but the fact you thought of it is another reason to avoid it. I wonder if one could buy an oryx made of onyx?

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/09/2018 01:06

Here is a painting of an oryx with onyx.

Oryx and Onyx - good twin names??
