People making me question names

I had chosen a name for my baby girl....Ellci which is a different spelling to Elsie... but everyone keeps pronouncing it as elki? And saying that if I chose that name she would always have people getting it wrong and spelling it wrong. Making me now question wether I've chosen the right name.

They're right. Honestly, do not do this to your daughter. She will have a lifetime of explaining, spelling out, and correcting people, and most probably resenting you more each time. Why not just call her Elsie? Why muck around with the spelling?

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 31/08/2018 19:25

Bosswitch, I too think the OP has made an unwise decision, but that's a bit unpleasant Shock

Please don’t spell it like that unless it’s a non-English spelling from your actual country.
If you’ve made it up it’s an abomination and people will judge. And your child will spend its entire life going, ‘No, with a C’.

NonaGrey · 31/08/2018 19:27

Personally I’d pronounce that el-chi given the spelling.

ELLCI is an Italian language school.

I’m not a fan of made up spellings I’m afraid.

Papyrus · 31/08/2018 19:27

I would definitely pronounce that name El-key if I saw it written down. Elsie is a lovely name though.

Scareyclairey0 · 31/08/2018 19:28

Uuuuh such an ugly spelling of a nice name. And the way it’s being pronounced, Elki, sounds like a sea creature.
Were you hoping to be yoonique with that?
Either call her Elsie or choose something else but go with the original spelling. Don’t make up a one.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 31/08/2018 19:29

Good of you to point out that Ellci is spelled differently to Elsie. We’d never have worked that out...
You’re having a laugh, aren’t you? Nobody is this dim.

You can change the spelling of the name on the birth certificate for no extra cost before she is one. Change the spelling asap. You're not doing her any favours at all for when she grows up.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 31/08/2018 19:31

I’d pronounce that spelling as ‘Ell-ki’ (and assume it was a boys name). If I knew it was a girls name, then I’d guess the pronunciation as ‘Ell-chi’ (and wonder why you’d chosen a name that sounded so much like Squelchy).

If you want your daughter to be called Elsie, then spell it Elsie.

Livinglavidal0ca · 31/08/2018 19:31

I read it as elky

HeronLanyon · 31/08/2018 19:31

I think I would pronounce it EllChee and assume she was perhaps Italian/Croatian oh thinking of Elche in Spain. I don’t think she will thank you for a life of having to spell it and pronounce it every time she (and indeed you !) uses it. Once explained I would then think her parent/s had been desperate to be ‘different’ and had lost their good sense momentarily.

BigBairyHollocks · 31/08/2018 19:32

More-on😂unnecessary but also hilarious.Sorry OP.I also pronounced that Ell-key

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/08/2018 19:33

I recognised it as El-see
However I can understand people
mis prouncing it. I'm afraid being realistic she probably will go through life having to correct people. There is nothing wrong with unique sellings providing it causes no confusion. How about Ellsee

BlueUggs · 31/08/2018 19:34

Why would you do that?! Elsie is such a pretty name. It looks ridiculous how you have spelt it and your poor child is going to spend the rest of her life until she changes it by deedpoll anyway correcting the pronunciation and spelling.
YABVVVVU

BlueSky198080 · 31/08/2018 19:34

Ell-key. Only way to pronounce it. Don’t be silly

Knittedfairies · 31/08/2018 19:35

People are not questioning the name, just your spelling.

Dillydallyer · 31/08/2018 19:35

I agree with everyone else, unfortunately. I would pronounce that Ell-chi not Elsie. DD has a name that originates from where DH was born/grew up but people where we live seem to struggle with the pronunciation. We've not changed the spelling (I can't stand it when people try to be 'unique'), it's just not a local name. I love her name but have sometimes thought it might have been easier to call her Mary!!

Elsie is a lovely name on its own. I'd leave it like that.

Not only will people spell it wrong, op, but they’ll think she’s thick when she gives them the “right” version.
Because that’s not only wrong, it’s ridiculous.
Like trying to make the name Elsie on a scrabble board but not having quite the right tiles.

There are many people called Ellci ...so no not something I made up...it's in the baby name book...but to be honest no need for the nasty comments...I won't ask for anything again

ReginaPhalange89 · 31/08/2018 19:39

Please don't use that spelling . Did you make that up? Elsie is a lovely name, don't ruin it !

I don't understand why people make up their own spellings. It doesn't make it 'unique' or cool. In fact the opposite. It's quite cringey , in my opinion of course. A
