People making me question names

I had chosen a name for my baby girl....Ellci which is a different spelling to Elsie... but everyone keeps pronouncing it as elki? And saying that if I chose that name she would always have people getting it wrong and spelling it wrong. Making me now question wether I've chosen the right name.

Izzyw1983 · 31/08/2018 20:49

Haha in cognito? Not that I need to explain myself especially as you have said there are no filters on this site I also have the right to say what I think. Name calling and put downs is not a discussion. People have a right to dislike a name but the terrible things that have been said....not about the name but her personally is out of order I'm sure you will agree.

LemonysSnicket · 31/08/2018 20:55

I would pronounce that El-chi

Lunde · 31/08/2018 20:56

FenellaMaxwellsPony: hmm Where did you get this mythical baby name book?

Here you go

The comments on this thread (and worse) are going to be what lots (most?) people will think in real life. They will judge you and your daughter.

Elsie is lovely and looks nice written down. People will know how to pronounce it and won’t judge you and your DD (rightly or wrongly) in a negative way.

You need to decide whether you want to put your DD through this for the rest of her life when it can be so easily avoided by spelling it Elsie.

MeandMoo · 31/08/2018 20:57

Elsie is a lovely name, I wouldn't spell it differently than traditional but it is your Baby, so entirely your choice. If you don't like People's comments then don't tell them her Name until she's here - they won't make comments then Wink

Westworldmaeve · 31/08/2018 20:59

I have a name that can be spelled differently. It's really annoying if everyone gets it wrong and you have to correct them your whole damn life. Please don't do this to your child. Just choose the spelling that is most used for the country that they live in. Otherwise you just make sure that you create negativity in their life.

LC
Phonetic at least...

Biscuitsneeded · 31/08/2018 21:18

OP what about a compromise. You could call her Elsi instead of Elsie. You still get to have a different spelling, but people would still know how to pronounce it, and when she tells people her name she's only got to say "Elsie without the final e" as opposed to "Ellci - Eee ell ell cee aye, yes really, that's really how it's spelt, no it's not pronounced ell-chee or El Key" etc which you must see is going to be a real pain for her as she grows up. Elsie is a really pretty name - don't question that - but spell it how you want it pronounced or you condemn her to a life of correcting people.

Lucy1103 · 31/08/2018 22:10

I don’t see the need for a different spelling as Elsie is a beautiful name in itself and although I’m just parroting others it’ll just be a life filled with correcting people and awkward moments in situations like job interviews and the dreaded supply teacher register

NonaGrey · 31/08/2018 22:18

I hope the thread isn’t upsetting you Lzzy.

Almost every poster has agreed that Elsie is a gorgeous name though (which doesn’t happen that often on a baby names thread) Smile

Cbeebiesrehab · 31/08/2018 22:51

I agree that maybe the spelling isn’t the best and the traditional spelling will make for a far easier life for little Elsie.

However the name calling really is unnecessary-calling someone a ‘moron’ and ‘dim’ whilst collectively mocking the OP. Really unkind from a bunch of adult mothers. You can state you don’t like something or even that you think it’s daft without resorting to name calling. If your kids did that I’m sure you would be appalled.

PrincessWire · 31/08/2018 23:23

Please don't do it OP! I have a friend with a bizarre unusual spelling of a perfectly normal name and she has spent her entire life getting her name either spelled wrong or pronounced wrong, depending on if people heard it or saw it first. She spent her time at primary school confused how to spell her own name! She stopped bothering correcting people about 5 years ago and now goes by the more usual spelling on facebook, much to her mother's chagrin.

Greeneyedgeek83 · 31/08/2018 23:38

Sharon pronounced Elsie wins best comment pmsl

Imknackeredzzz · 31/08/2018 23:44

Sharon pronounced Elsie! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

SpectacularAardvark · 01/09/2018 00:04

I quite like Elkie, as a PP said, it does sound like a sea creature!

Airaforce · 01/09/2018 05:56

This is an elk, please change the spelling back to Elsie so people don't call her elkie which sounds very similar to Elk.

elk

SD1978 · 01/09/2018 06:02

Why do you feel you need a 'yoonique' spelling of a perfectly reasonable and recognised name? If you are expecting people to call her Elsie. If you believe it should be pronounced Elsie.......maybe juts call her Elsie? This desire to have letter vomit spellings of names to be different, whilst expecting everyone to record rise how it's said is a ridiculous trend. You have some good friends who are trying to save your child from embarrassment and eye rolling. Maybe listen to them.

hoping2018 · 01/09/2018 08:10

I wouldn't have pronounced it as Elsie.

If you want a unique spelling - go for it! But I would go for something that is phonetically obvious written down - why not add an e to the end as others have suggested ellcie?

Unfortunately it will be committing them to a lifetime of spelling it out. I'm currently considering the same though as think I'll give my baby a Welsh spelling in England to represent their heritage!
