‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

OP posts:

Wet isn't the same as femine (in regards to boy's names) imo...
Casey, Daniel, Lucas. I've never actually met a Casey, but the name is abuut as strong as old lettuce in my personal opinion.

Mindy, Adeline, Callie.

Very interesting read, and I was thinking it was more by association to people with certain qualities that we know with those wet names in life, but then the 'wettest' name for me is Martin, and I don't know any in real life! I couldn't for the life of me put my finger on what it is about that name. Some other names I would class as wet though are definitely due to association.

villainousbroodmare · 19/08/2018 08:32

Joseph imo is wet.
Lucy is quite the opposite to me. It reminds me of a ruby or something vivacious that glows.

Trampire · 19/08/2018 08:37

Well I have a Lucy so am obviously biased but she is furthest from being 'wet' than I can possibly imagine.

Lucy means 'light' - I don't understand how that is a name that just 'there' as opposed to any of the weird and unpronounceable names I often see on here.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 19/08/2018 08:39

Tubetop - but does he identify as Timothy or Tim?

I know several Tims who are no doubt Timothy on their birth certificate (who aren't wet in the slightest) but can't imagine a grown man choosing to be known as Timothy with the requisite vim or vigour to give anyone a good rogering Grin

Bunnybigears · 19/08/2018 08:39

Im surprised people think Daniel is a 'wet' name.

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/08/2018 08:41

glintandglide · 19/08/2018 08:52

I was surprised by the prevalence of Timothy until I saw the reference go Tim above. Yes all the very non wet Timothy’s I know are Tim Grin

Skyejuly · 19/08/2018 08:57

Ah yes Rupert, Adrian, Gavin, Milo,

Mirabelle

MeyMary · 19/08/2018 08:58

I agree with the pps. Joseph, Walter and Susan really are wet...

KERALA1 · 19/08/2018 09:02

Sophie - as a child I misheard it as soppy so is the ultimate wet name.

I include "cutesy twee" as wet too - Daisy, Poppy, Honey I cringe when these names are used they sound ridiculous on adults fine for toddlers but they only toddlers for a few years.

dementedma · 19/08/2018 09:05

The names that came to my mind were Toby, Eugene and Piers - I know all 3 and all 3 are senior military officers and hard as nails!! So that didn't work....

Walter, Miles and adult Jamies sound wet to me.

AmyRhodes · 19/08/2018 09:08

Toby, Timothy and Julian are the ultimate wet lettuce names, as many posters have said.

Can't say I agree with Hector @FoofFighter considering he was the greatest warrior of the Trojan war!

TubeTop · 19/08/2018 09:11

@shaggedthruahedgebackwards

Good point, he's a vigorous Tim

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 19/08/2018 09:16

I knew it tubetop!! Wink

CherryPavlova · 19/08/2018 09:18

What a silly concept. It’s often upper middle class names that are perceived as foppish - some are hung over from the Beano, undoubtedly. For all the names quoted I can think of people who are incredibly strong and anything but wet.
Timothy West, the actor seems pretty unset caring for his wife with dementia.
Joseph Stalin had many, hideous failings but I’m not sure he was wet. Joseph Merrill was incredibly brave in the face of very nasty public challenges and unpleasant treatment.
Susan Sarandon as a Goodwill Ambassador and activist doesn’t strike me as wet.
Thinking of Rosemary’s and only Rosemary Shrager comes to mind. Again, not someone I’d think of as wet.
Plenty of very robust Mary’s starting with the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, of course and moving forwards to Mary Seacole and Mary Phillips the suffragette.

Just names.

actualpuffins · 19/08/2018 09:21

Ellie? Fuck off. It's short for Eleanor, as in Eleanor of Aquitaine, who may as well have been queen of the fucking world at the time. Plus the number of current female
sportswomen who use the short form of the name.

And Lucy? Lucy in The Chronicles of Narnia is anything but wet.

Fucking read a book, you're embarrassing yourself.

veeboo · 19/08/2018 09:41

Malcolm!

dinosaurkisses · 19/08/2018 10:06

“Fucking read a book, you're embarrassing yourself.”

Bit of an overreaction.

craftymum01 · 19/08/2018 10:12

Agreed. Not sure what reading has to do with it?

People need to lighten up.

pipilangstrumpf · 19/08/2018 10:19

Weak sounding names like Ellie, Evie, Alfie, Noah? Names with few consonants? Names that don't sound strong?

Hangingaroundtheportal · 19/08/2018 10:26

My sons name has been mentioned on here. In my opinion it's not "wet" at all. It takes a strong man to carry a feminine name and vice versa.

Are you are Johnny Cash fan by any chance?!

Hangingaroundtheportal · 19/08/2018 10:28

I think Julian, Rupert, Robin and Crispin are the ultimate 'wet' boys names.

BonnieLass5 · 19/08/2018 10:37

Personally I think Julian is more posh than wet.

MeyMary · 19/08/2018 10:44

I think Julian, Rupert, Robin and Crispin are the ultimate 'wet' boys names.

That's so interesting. It's such a subjective topic...

Julian is a rather strong name in my personal opinion.

Crispin and Corbin (...)are the names of two adorable but cheaky boys I've recently met (one of them is our neighbour's son), these names don't seem wet to me.

Joseph however is just "urgh"(so so wet, imo).

So is Ellie as a given name. But Eleanora is lovely :)

Mary/Maria is a very strong name imo. :)
(probably based on personal associations / enocunters. Maria is a rather popular name amongst my female relatives. I'd actually love to use it for a daughter but there are already too many of them Wink)
