Do all Rebecca's become Bex/Becs as adults?

DH suggested it for DC4, but the idea of Bex seriously puts me off! Yet it's a beautiful name!

I've always thought it's a lovely name. I know an adult Rebecca who goes by her full name.

ItsMutinyOnTheBunty · 10/08/2018 10:42

I get called Rachael a lot too!

Beccabean26 · 10/08/2018 13:24

I'm a Rebecca. I've always been called Becky at school, by friends and family etc. When I'm at work I've always introduced myself as Rebecca, so that name sticks. I like having a name I can chose to shorten or not ☺️

foxtiger · 10/08/2018 14:06

I don't think I've ever met someone who used the full 'Rebecca'.

I know an adult Rebecca who prefers to be Rebecca, is definitely not a Becky, but the one short form she will accept from certain friends is Rebs. I guess there is also Rebbie (a la Rebbie Jackson, whose real name is actually Maureen!)

AmabelleOnabike · 10/08/2018 14:10

I know 4 "Rebecca"'s. They are aged 40, 22, 13 and 5. None of them use a diminutive.

bigassmom · 10/08/2018 14:12

I've never heard anyone use Bec or Bex, but I know a couple of Beccas and Beckys and one girl at ds school who has always been Rebecca.

MiMr · 10/08/2018 14:14

I'm Rebecca and my sisters shorten it to 'Becka' .. my mum called me Bex which I hated but everybody else who has ever said my name calls me Rebecca :)

qumquat · 10/08/2018 14:15

Becky sounds old fashioned to me. All the Rebeccas I have taught have stayed as Rebeccas. (Teenagers) so I think the shortening is less inevitable now than it used to be.

elephantoverthehill · 10/08/2018 14:16

My reply at work sometimes is 'Definitely Daphne du Maurier, and absolutely not Sunny Brook Farm'. Close friends and family call me Becka or Becks and some other things too

nervyuyt · 10/08/2018 14:17

I’m a Rebecca. I cannot stand being called Becky, it’s twee and childlike IMO.

Hehe im going to show this to my auntie Becky who is 87 Grin she will be delighted to have her name considered child like!

She is a Rebekah

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 10/08/2018 14:21

My niece Rebecca is sixteen, and known as Reba.

tootiredtospeak · 10/08/2018 14:22

My sister is becky boo my freind bex but its never a rebecca ever for any I have ever know.

RedPandaMama · 10/08/2018 14:24

I'm a Rebecca, and have 2 other Rebecca's as friends. Rebecca was strictly our school name/name our mum's called us.

I'm Becky or Bex, my friend is Becca or Bec and the other is Reb.

Mousefunky · 10/08/2018 14:25

Went to school with lots of them (90s baby) and they were all Becky or Bex. I think one was Becca. None of them were ever known as Rebecca.

LemonysSnicket · 10/08/2018 14:26

I know 3 Beckys, 1 Rebecca, 1 Becca and a Becks

GrouchyKiwi · 10/08/2018 14:27

I am a Rebekah and generally known by my full name. My siblings will sometimes call me Bekah, as will close friends, but that's much less common since I had children. Dad occasionally calls me Rebek, sometimes there's a Bex or Reb, and only two people in the world ever have called me Becky and got away with it. One was my Oma, the other a lady at my supermarket job who was too lovely for me to correct her as she would have taken it too much to heart.

RedPandaMama · 10/08/2018 14:28

@Birdy1978 I'm Rebecca and my sister is also a Rachael, hi! Great when post used to come to the house for Miss R Surname. Used to spend our lives opening each others letters!

AnotherRebecca · 10/08/2018 14:30

I used to get called Rachel a lot too! I've been Becky since primary school to all but my family who call me Reb. I prefer Rebecca now but wouldn't bother trying to re-train everyone I know! Seems a bit precious somehow! I don't mind Becky, can't stand Bex. It's the only nn I'll challenge!

MummyItsallaboutyou · 10/08/2018 14:36

I'm Rebecca, mostly known as Becky, sometimes Bex. I have a friend who is always Rebecca.

sohorrible · 10/08/2018 14:36

I've know a Bex, two Beccas and multiple Beckys.

I don't mind the first two but have a strong dislike of the name Becky for some reason.

tessilate · 10/08/2018 14:46

My name is Becky and I'm 38, I haven't liked it for about a decade because it just sounds like a little girls name. I'm actually a bit embarrassed to introduce myself sometimes. My actual name is Rebecca but nobody has ever called me that so it doesn't feel like 'my' name. Bex is godawful, I hate when I get called that.

On balance I wish I was called something else!

tessilate · 10/08/2018 14:49

God 'Reb'?!!! That's awful. I'm glad nobody has ever called me that!

cakesandphotos · 10/08/2018 14:50

I’m Rebecca and was Rebecca at school until I was in high school. Been Becky ever since though and I do prefer it. My mum and best friend sometimes call me Bex

WickerHippo · 10/08/2018 14:53

An adult Rebecca I know is Becky, Bec or Rebecca

IRememberSoIDo · 10/08/2018 14:55

I know a Rebecca and have a cousin Rebecca who uses the full name to all bar family who call her Becca, my aunt hated Becky but allowed Becca when she called herself that as a child. She just corrects people if they use a shortened version she doesn't like. Ditto for a friend Samantha who just says I don't like Sam please call me Samantha if anyone shortens it. She's in her late 40's so it's worked for her!
