I know these names won't be everyone's cup of teas but I have a 3 year old daughter named Heidi Rose and I really love how Dolly sounds with Heidi , 'Heidi and Dolly' but ever since I was a teenager I have had a huge love for the name Blossom.. what do you think? Smile

But you called your other child Heidi which is lovely. All names are personal choice so they'll always be those that like/loathe them whatever the name. It's not a case of can't win, it's just taste.

You've chosen two names that have livestock associations. People have pointed that out. It's only what people in real life would think (although possibly not say to your face) as well.

When naming our children we always asked ourselves if we could imagine a Prime Minister being called the name, of the answer was no we ruled it out!

daisypond · 22/05/2018 19:06

It doesn't matter how much though you put into the names and how much you might think they are pretty if your child doesn't think it's a nice name. I don't think either Blossom or Dolly are pretty names or very suitable for child or a woman. I don't think it's a good idea to pick a name that sounds cute. Dolly is just about OK if it's a short form for one of the longer options mentioned up thread, but not as a name itself. Blossom is probably better, in my opinion - it's a nice image, but the sound of it isn't particularly pleasant to my ears.

ellalouise90 · 22/05/2018 19:08

The thing is though just because of a name why can't you imagine a prime minister Dolly? Just because her name would be Blossom or Dolly does not mean she will be any less of a person because of this! She can't be ruled out due to a name! So your telling me if you went to see a doctor whose name was Blossom you wouldn't let her see you as her name is not the average name! This does not mean she is a 'bad' doctor and knows any less than what a doctor Danielle would know! This is disgraceful... why would you single out somebody due to there name , a Blossom / Dolly can do just as well in life as a Katie or Rebecca or Emma!

Blossom and Dolly both immediately made me think of sheep (I live in a farming community), sorry! I've just done a straw poll of 9 people in the room aged between 11 and 84 and all of them said the same thing, even my 11 yo DN.

Dorothea is a beautiful name, I immediately thought of the heroine of Middlemarch by George Eliot.

autumnkate · 22/05/2018 19:15

I would rather be Blossom than Dorothea any day.

robotcartrainhat · 22/05/2018 19:17

The consultant psychiatrist where my DH works is called Crystal.

Just thought this was a good place to mention that.

And there have only been two female prime ministers anyway... so whos to know if the next one will be named Blossom or not?

bugaboop · 22/05/2018 19:17

Dolly is so cute. Blossom sounds too try hard.

ellalouise90 · 22/05/2018 19:19

@robotcartrainhat thanks for this comment! Hopefully will open peoples eyes more 😄

I know an adult called Bloss, presumably short for Blossom. Never really thought about it, she's got a serious job so don't think it held her back.

I prefer Blossom to Dolly. Think I would go for a longer name that could be shortened possibly, as others have said. But it is up to you and your partner, no-one else. Choose the name you like best and don't tell other people until after the baby is here.

Emily7708 · 22/05/2018 19:23

My MIL was called Dolly, it wasn’t short for anything, just Dolly. I grew to really like it over the years. Heidi is really lovely so you need something as good. Really dislike Blossom for a person, sorry.

FartnissEverbeans · 22/05/2018 19:28

I quite like both tbh. I prefer Dolly as a nickname, maybe for Dinah (although that's not traditional, I think it works).

I work with children and unusual names are par for the course these days.

BackIntoTheSun · 22/05/2018 19:31

I like Blossom. Didn't occur to me that there was a cow connection at all. I think there are about three names you are allowed to like on mn, the rest are denounced as too popular, too out there or too dull (naming your child any of these is tantamount to child abuse obv)

TawandaT · 22/05/2018 19:42

Well....Dolly the sheep was the first cloned mammal and is fairly well known. If I had to choose I'd still go with Dolly. I just couldn't with Blossom. It sounds like a pet rabbit's name. People are biased. It is horrible but it's also true. Naming your child a rather strange name will disadvantage them and just why would you really when there are so many names to choose from that wouldn't?

QueenOfIce · 22/05/2018 20:24

Why don't you give her a more conventional middle name then when she's older if she doesn't like her first name she could be known as her middle instead.

I've never heard an adult say to another 'what a horrible name you have you must hate your mother' Congratulations op, whether she's Blossom or Dolly I'm sure she will be lovely Smile

Twelve8Ts · 22/05/2018 20:46

I never understand the bully comment...if the child getting bullied is called Blossom then what’s the bullies name? Surely that’s a worse association to have.
Daisy is a cows name but that doesn’t stop people naming their daughters it.
‘Dolly will be an adult one day’ - but it’s ok the other way around and for people to call their babies old lady names, like Mabel etc?
You should call your baby whatever you like, Blossom really isn’t that ‘out there’, names like Hunter and River probably would have the same reaction a few years back but people seem to like them now. I think it’s nice when people don’t follow trends, people have the cheek to say Blossom is a cow when a lot of these people are sheep. Rant over! Sorry!

LoveInTokyo · 22/05/2018 20:49

Blossom and Dolly are both utterly silly names. Don’t do this to your kid. Especially as Heidi is actually a perfectly fine name so your kids won’t even share in the misery together.

HappyStripper · 22/05/2018 20:54

Heidi’s great but Blossom and Dolly are names I’d consider for a goat. There are plenty of names that work for humans that still have a nice sound and age well.

Hope
Felicity
Isla
Mira
Lottie
Etc.

@Twelve8Ts thank you so much for this amazing comment , I appreciate it so much!

OP I know what u r saying and I agree that it’s disgraceful that people might discriminate because of a name but, as u can see from this thread, some people would. You can’t change them but if it bothers you you can use a slightly more conventional name (could still be unusual but one that wouldn’t raise so many eyebrows). There’s also a lot of people who wouldn’t discriminate too tho so it’s totally your choice.

Kokeshi123 · 23/05/2018 00:36

I think they're both pretty frightful, honestly, and please don't kid yourself that they will sound "normal" by the time your child is an adult. Very very few people give their children names like this and I would be fantastically resentful if my parents named me Blossom or Dolly.

Heidi is a lovely name--why not choose something similar in style?

Pressuredrip · 23/05/2018 00:38

Dolly. I quite like Blossom but it does sound more out there and not quite marching with Heidi which is a top 50 name. Dolly sounds quite retro. I do know two Dolly's. One is a baby and one is a 10 year old.

Pressuredrip · 23/05/2018 00:43

I think Dolores is totally awesome if a bit hipster alternative though and would hush the naysayers if you wanted a longer more official name, Dolly totally flows as a nickname. One of my daughters has a really unusual known as nickname and an even more unusual full name that she is never known as, not even in school, but I do like that she has the longer name to chose if she wishes when older for job applications and if she wants a different nickname.

AmazingPostVoices · 23/05/2018 00:52

I personally don't understand why people associate the name 'blossom' with a cow?

In 1796 Edward Jenner used a cow called Blossom in his famous smallpox research. This is the research that lead to the eventual eradication of smallpox btw.

His work was very famous and the name “Blossom the cow” entered the national consciousness. There have been other famous Blossom the cows since.

And of course I presume you are aware of Dolly the cloned sheep?

So there you have it Ella scientists got there first and ruined your name choices...

Thea is an absolutely gorgeous name though and would work very well with Heidi.

VerbenaBoriensis · 23/05/2018 00:52

Hi OP agree with pps-blossom sounds like a cow and dolly a sheep. Maybe u could use them as middle names?

melodybirds · 23/05/2018 01:07

Darla and blossom as a middle name.
