Blossom or Dolly

I know these names won't be everyone's cup of teas but I have a 3 year old daughter named Heidi Rose and I really love how Dolly sounds with Heidi , 'Heidi and Dolly' but ever since I was a teenager I have had a huge love for the name Blossom.. what do you think? Smile

Blossom for me but that's because my dogs called dolly!

MrsCD67 · 22/05/2018 12:39

I think of animals too- sorry!
However, if you used Dolly as a nickname, that would be very cute as she'd have the option for using a long name professionally/growing up

Eolian · 22/05/2018 12:48

It's not just about the fact that she will one day be an adult.
I have a nearly 13 yo, very ungirly dd. She would loathe to have the name Blossom or Dolly, and neither would suit her. I don't understand why people choose über-cutesy-girly names when there is a reasonable chance that their dd will not turn out to be a girly girl. A normal name with the option of a cutesy nickname would be much fairer on your child.

robotcartrainhat · 22/05/2018 12:51

I think Blossom is a lovely name!! Not too sure about Dolly... reminds me of the cloned sheep

FuckTheFuckingDailyFuckingMail · 22/05/2018 12:53

My friend's dog is called Blossom. It's perfect for a border terrier, not so much for a humanoid

robotcartrainhat · 22/05/2018 12:54

And plenty of grown, non girly, successful women have flower names. A name is what you make it.
And all kids go through phases of hating their names at some point whatever you name them! I did and I have a perfectly traditional name.
When you grow up though I think in most cases you learn to love your name. Its something your parents gave you as a symbol of love and they thought about it.... that means a lot as you get older. And I think with unique names that were meaningful or special to your parents, that is even more true.

Pompom42 · 22/05/2018 13:12

I love both equally. I do know a Dolly but safe to say no Blossom. Think there was an Eastenders character years ago called Blossom?
I like both, put the names in a hat and see which one you pull out

Nikephorus · 22/05/2018 13:21

Blossom is definitely a cow's name. And Dolly is a sheep. But if you want your child to be teased constantly and to grow up hating you....

MyTeapot · 22/05/2018 13:23

ellalouise90 I also have Heidi Rose! Smile

She is awesome not at all biased

GunpowderAndLead · 22/05/2018 13:31

They're both cute in their own way. I'd just make sure she had an option of a normal name if she didn't like being unusual.

So a normal middle name or you make the first name longer which then can be shortened to Dolly. I think i prefer Blossom but can't think of a normal nickname out of it if she hates it

Letloose · 22/05/2018 13:34

My child has a V unusual name because me and my husband loved it! Not everyone likes it but that’s up to them. No need for the nasty comments. Go with what you love OP

InkSnail · 22/05/2018 14:32

Would these be the sort of style? Pretty but perhaps less OTT?

Daisy
Belinda (Bella)
Polly
Mabel
Lucy

VileyRose · 22/05/2018 14:38

Blossom because I love James Taylor!

concretesieve · 22/05/2018 14:52

Have we had Blossom Willoughby from the Chalet School? Grin Seriously, I Iike Daria Blossom - goes very nicely with Heidi Rose.

corcaithecat · 22/05/2018 14:57

Of the 2, I prefer Dolly but both are lovely.
My son has a name more commonly associated with a pet dog, but I liked it and more importantly, DS likes it and loves being a bit different.
Just go with whichever name you like best.

autumnkate · 22/05/2018 17:21

OP I have a daughter called Theodora (classic bit unusual right?) still have people saying she’ll hate it when she’s older etc. She’s YOUR baby, go with what you love.

ellalouise90 · 22/05/2018 17:25

@autumnkate thank you for this comment! I always think that no matter what you call your child they will suit that name no matter what because they will grow into it🙈 some of these comments are so horrible though😔😔

@Nikephorus my child 'hate me' for picking a name that is pretty and that I have put a lot of thought into? If you think this is what will happen you must think I parent wrong as my child will grow to be a loving , caring , confident woman!! and her name will suit her no matter what .. absolutely disgraceful comment!!

Some would do hate their name when they're older. My brother has a very unusual name and was teased mercilessly as a child and especially a teenager. I would have hated an unusual name as I prefer to blend in!

As an adult my bother likes his name as it is useful in his line of work to be memorable! It is a name that is suited to an adult more than a child though.

TheMonkeyMummy · 22/05/2018 18:07

I feel sorry for the adult with these names.

Nikephorus · 22/05/2018 18:18

Yes your child could hate you if you give them a name that gets them bullied & that they detest because it's a cow's name! It's not whether you love it, it's whether it'll be appropriate for them as they grow up. You could love 'Tweedledee Dumpling' as a name but that doesn't make it a good name. It's like giving your child a name that has terrible initials - Felicity Una Catherine King might be lovely as individual parts but put together.....
Ask 20 strangers (not on Mumsnet) what they think of when they hear 'Blossom' and 'Dolly' and if at least half (if not 3/4+) don't mention cows and sheep I'll be gobsmacked. And no-one wants to have a name traditionally associated with a farm animal.

Candyflip · 22/05/2018 18:20

I have a niece called Dolly, absolutely love the name! Blossom is a fat-bottomed girl with big goofy teeth who still says mummy when she is 40. HTH.

ellalouise90 · 22/05/2018 18:46

@Nikephorus please tell me what your children are called then! You can't win in this world , a name is always 'too old fashioned! Or 'too out there' there is no definition of a 'normal name' not one name is normal it all went through a stage at one point of being a 'unusual name' !!!

They both sound like blow up sex dolls. Please please choose a name that doesn't sound like an inflatable sex toy

autumnkate · 22/05/2018 18:48

I love Blossom and would have used it if I were braver. Go for it. I’d rather be called Blossom than any of the alternatives suggested on here.
