Xanthippe?

Ok so we are currently sifting through baby names and we are probably never going to name our child this (If it's a girl) as I just know that it will be mispronounced and misspelled but it's kind of a guilty pleasure name for us And my fiancee genuinely likes the name (I think we are settled on Cora though for a girl), we are not seriously considering the name but I would like to know your opinions on it.

By the way, it is pronounced Zan-thip-ee. Love the nn Xan too I have to say. What do you think? :)

Xanthe is nice, and you can get Xan out of that. Never heard of Xanthippe. Where does the stress go?

Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 18:58

I wouldn’t have had any problems pronouncing it.

I would suspect that she’d get called Hippo in primary and Xanax in high school.

BossWitch · 06/04/2018 19:00

I looked at it for 0.02 seconds before I saw "hippo". Nope.

How about just Xanthe?

leghairdontcare · 06/04/2018 19:00

Kimmy Schmidt. That's all I can think.

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 19:01

@daisypond I suppose it would be THIP. Xanthippe was actually the name of Socrates' wife :)

Wasn't that the obnoxious yet vulnerable daughter in Kimmy Schmidt?

MarthasGinYard · 06/04/2018 19:02

Sorry think it's awful

Xanthe fine though and Cora

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 19:02

I'm sorry but Xanthe is horrible lol.

We will probably be going with Cora or Hailey. Nice to see the Unbreakable Jimmy Schmidt fans!

Kimmy

Cora is so popular at the moment

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/04/2018 19:07

Xanthippe is a bit pretentious... And a horrible sounding name. I don't think any daughter would thank you for it! Cora is much better. Or Xanthe as above, similar but not as ridiculous.

Habanero · 06/04/2018 19:07

Is this a sister for Balonz?

Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 19:10

How on earth can you think Xanthe is horrible but think Xanthippe is nice?

No one would call her Xanthippe - it would be changed to Xanthe almost immediately- by the child!

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 19:10

Don't be ridiculous @Habanero, a sister for Denzel and Beaumont.

Blatant child abuse. What if the poor child has a lisp?

Fightthebear · 06/04/2018 19:14

Loved that Balonz name thread 😁

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 19:16

I've thought this through @KendalMintCakey, it would be unfortunate yes but that is what the nickname is for, Xan 😆.

HappyLollipop · 06/04/2018 19:29

Don't like the Xan nn as Xanax is a very popular drug right now thats very trendy with a lot of hip hop artists there's even a rapper called lil'xan because of his love of getting high of xanax!

Kidslovecucumber · 06/04/2018 19:49

Looks a little bit like you got the shit tiles in Scrabble😬
Zanthe is nice though and I used to teach a little girl whose nickname was Zanny and it really suited her!

I know someone called this! She's called Tippe (pronounced Tippi) for short. I think it's lovely

Greenandcabbagelooking · 06/04/2018 19:53

I know a Xantippe, which is shortened to Tippi. I really like it, and it really suits her.

I prefer it without the H in the middle.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 06/04/2018 19:55

Looks ugly and sounds ugly Confused

TheRealXan · 06/04/2018 19:58

Yeah I can't resist defending my own name Grin never had any issues being called anything other than Xan though.
It's a wonderful name, much better than Cora I'm totally not biased
