Is Aubrey a girls or boys name?

I really like the name Aubrey but my husband and family keep saying it's a mans name, I think it's a beautiful girls name. What do others think?

Boys name. Audrey is a girls name.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 19/03/2018 14:56

The only Aubrey’s I’ve known are men.

BevBrook · 19/03/2018 14:56

Although googling it I see there are women called Aubrey. I didn’t know that, I would always assume it was a boy’s name.

ThatsNotMyUnicorn · 19/03/2018 14:56

I've only ever heard it used as a girls name

YerAuntFanny · 19/03/2018 14:57

Personally, I think it's better suited to females.

Strax · 19/03/2018 14:57

Boy’s name. Audrey would be the girls version

sirlee66 · 19/03/2018 14:58

Only know it as a girls name

ineedwine99 · 19/03/2018 14:59

Friend of mine has a daughter called Aubrey. Never heard of it as mans name before

Perfectly1mperfect · 19/03/2018 14:59

I know one the mums on teen mum used it for her daughter, spelt Aubree.

DramaAlpaca · 19/03/2018 14:59

It's traditionally a male name.

I know in recent years it's been used as a girls' name but to me it's an old fashioned boys' name. I think using it as a female name is a trend that started in the US & made its way over here.

Audrey is much nicer for a girl.

Snipples · 19/03/2018 14:59

Traditionally Aubrey is a boys name but has been used for girls also so is quite unisex at the moment. You could use Aubree to make it more obviously a female name. I think people will not know right away if your child is a boy or girl with this name, which might appeal to you or be annoying.

bridgetreilly · 19/03/2018 15:12

Boy's name. I would think it very odd to call a girl Aubrey.

HuskyMcClusky · 19/03/2018 15:13

Boys’ name.

Tryingtokeepfit · 19/03/2018 15:19

It's a unisex name.
I think traditionally it is a man's name ( my grandfathers name). But now it is possibly more common as a girl's name.

A mixture of responses above show its definitely unisex Smile

Alison100199 · 19/03/2018 15:20

Male

Synecdoche · 19/03/2018 15:26

Definitely a male name to me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/03/2018 15:27

From the sound of it in another ten years it will probably be exclusively a girls' name, but it was a boys' name (never a common one). If you use it for your daughter, she may have quite a lot of tiresome misunderstandings from people who only know it as a boys' name. Maybe she won't care, but personally that would put me right off and I'd go for something which is either unambiguously a girls' name or better established as unisex (e.g. Alex).

Please don't spell it Aubree. Firstly, it makes it look like you can't spell. Secondly, the stress on Aubrey is traditionally on the first syllable. If you spell it Aubree it will be pronounced either with equal stress on both syllables or with the stress on the -bree bit. Both will sound clunky.

SuperUnicorn · 19/03/2018 15:45

I know several. They are all male and over 40. I have heard it is now more popular as a name for a girl, although I haven't come across any.

TheVanguardSix · 19/03/2018 15:48

Aubrey Beardsley comes to mind immediately.
I have only ever known (very few) Aubreys and all have been male.

MammieBear · 19/03/2018 16:06

Boys originally...

LadyPug · 19/03/2018 16:10

Male name, traditional old school name. Only heard it for a few American girls so think it’s just a trend. Nice strong classic boys name imo

Heartofglass12345 · 19/03/2018 16:11

My grandfather was called Aubrey and he would be in his 80’s now, the only other person ive known with it was in his 60’s too. That being said, I think it quite suits a girl. I think its a popular girls name in America

FemaleDilbert · 19/03/2018 16:15

I know two Aubreys, both male

squoosh · 19/03/2018 16:16

It's a boys' name but it will go the way of Beverley and Shirley and be perceived as a girls' name.

SpringEquinox · 19/03/2018 16:20

Not frequently heard now, but a man's name in the UK. I have heard it used for girls in the US, though, and I think it is very pretty .
