Is Aubrey a girls or boys name?

I really like the name Aubrey but my husband and family keep saying it's a mans name, I think it's a beautiful girls name. What do others think?

I have a female friend, Aubrey
She is American though so not sure if it’s very popular for girls in uk

dun1urkin · 19/03/2018 19:59

I think if you’re from the US it’s a girls name (or unisex?), if you’re from the UK it’s a boys name.

Was on the list for my boy-cat. I think it’s a good cat name....

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/03/2018 20:03

Definitely male. If you're in the UK is assume you'd got it mixed up with Audrey.

2 year old DS has a lovely little girl at nursery called Aubrey, me and DM regularly have this debate though!

AuntieStella · 19/03/2018 20:07

Boy's name - only know males in RL

Winifredgoose10 · 19/03/2018 20:07

I had a great uncle Aubrey. Only one I've ever known.

Ruffian · 19/03/2018 20:08

Previously been a man's name in the UK but so rare now I think you'd be fine to use it for a girl, it would be lovely and unusual. According to Wikipedia it means 'Fair ruler of the little people'!

FUN FACT: The rapper Drake's real name is Aubrey. Ergo, it's male.

Elend · 19/03/2018 20:11

Traditionally male but becoming more unisex. For example I know Drake's real first name is Aubrey, but the first person who springs to mind for me is the actress Aubrey Plaza

MikeUniformMike · 19/03/2018 21:26

It's a boy's name. How about Aubretia? (pron. O-bree-sha)

madamedepoppadom · 19/03/2018 21:34

It is traditionally a boy's name but has been used a bit for girls in the last 20 years or so, mainly in America. Personally I don't like it very much for either sex but it still feels a bit wrong to give it to a girl somehow.

Audrey is not the female equivalent - they are completely unrelated. I do think Audrey is a much more attractive name though!

Sophronia · 19/03/2018 21:41

I know an American female Aubrie

LastNightsMakeUp · 19/03/2018 22:01

It is definitely a boys name. However if you look at the top names in 1900 (my preferred name era) you’ll see that Lynn, Cleo and Clair, Pearl and Jean were also popular boys names.
I know one of the ‘Teen mom 2’ mums named her daughter Aubree (I shouldn’t know that)

Playdohnut · 19/03/2018 22:04

Aubrey Beardsley is the only Aubrey I know of, male and famous illustrator (if you're into that sort of thing).

3boysandabump · 19/03/2018 22:11

Only aubrey I've ever heard of is the one from teen mom and that's a girl

whampiece · 19/03/2018 22:45

Boy’s name. Audrey would be the girls version

No. It really wouldn't.

Octave777 · 20/03/2018 01:55

Girls name

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/03/2018 02:01

Aubrey is a male name. I've never come across it used for a girl. I asociate it with older men (80+) but it might be coming back into fashion again.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 20/03/2018 02:02

I've only ever heard of male Aubreys, of all ages.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 20/03/2018 03:14

I first knew it as a girls’ name from the Bread song of the same name which starts:

“And Aubrey was her name.
A not so very ordinary girl or name.”

A beautiful song and I loved the name for a girl since I first heard it as a teenager.

Since then I only know of Aubrey Beardsley and a male character in a Georgette Heyer novel. For all 3 of the above reasons I would have been happy to call a boy or girl Aubrey, but DP did not like it.

lazydog · 20/03/2018 03:55

I only know of one, IRL, and that's a 14yr old (Canadian) boy.

123MothergotafleA · 20/03/2018 04:13

It is indeed a boys name, but there's nothing wrong with using it for a girl if you are determined enough.

BlackberryandNettle · 21/03/2018 21:46

I know a man in his sixties called Aubrey.

NataliaOsipova · 21/03/2018 21:47

Definitely, definitely a boys' name.

grandplans · 21/03/2018 21:49

Definitely a male name.

Isn't Timothy Spall's character in Life is Sweet called Aubrey? (Or am I getting my Mike Leigh films mixed up?)
