I really like the name Aubrey but my husband and family keep saying it's a mans name, I think it's a beautiful girls name. What do others think?

I love it as a girls name! It's unisex

We have it on our list and we are having a baby girl! We think it’s a beautiful name for a girl and we have also read (and been told) that it’s a man’s name.

This wouldn’t put us off!

Why not call her John?

I think it is a strong, masculine male name, and I cringe a bit to hear that it is being used as a girls' name recently. As if the perfectly cool Audrey wasn't good enough. If I met a female baby Aubrey, I would either think that her parents just hadn't understood that they are different names, or that they were trying a bit hard. I can't believe I'm writing this, I'm never usually critical on baby name threads, but this had got to me somehow. Those of you who know or are planning female Aubreys, I am sure they are gorgeous and really suit their names.

It's a boy's name, as in Aubrey Beardsley, the artist.

I know one Aubrey - male. And yes, Aubrey Beardsley.

Boys. Love Audrey for a girl though, as others have said.

Male name. Of course.

A friend of mine recently named her son Aubrey. So it isn't just a male name, but one still being used as such today. I believe it's relatively frequently used as a girls name in the US, though.

nothing wrong with using it for a girl if you are determined enough.

But it's the daughter who would need the determination, to go through life with a name traditionally used for boys and deal with the endless confusion. Some names change very rapidly and completely from boys' to girls' (this seems to have happened decisively with Madison, Jordan, Courtney) but Aubrey is such a rare name anyway that I can't see this happening in the same way.

I read that in Gru's voice.

It's not a unisex name. It's masculine and your daughter is the one who will face the reality of the consequences...but as we are living in a new world of neutral gender she will be fine I guess.

Aubrey is a girls name in my opinion

Aubrey is a proper unisex name, however I'd say it's much more common on boys than girls.

It is so not a unisex name. It’s a boys’ name!

Aubrey is a very old traditional male name, i know 3 Aubreys, one being my eldest ds! I do believe that Aubrey is a more common girls name in America.

There is a lovely little boy called Aubrey at our local baby group. Have heard it on older men in the UK. When I lived in the states it seemed to be a fairly popular girls name, often with a variety of delightful spellings.

It’s not a ‘proper unisex name ‘, it is a boy’s name which has started to be used for girls in America.

It's a short form of Auberon/Oberon, so I'd never see it as unisex, but might think of fairies.
