I really like the name Aubrey but my husband and family keep saying it's a mans name, I think it's a beautiful girls name. What do others think?

It’s a boys name. No amount of saying it is a girls names or unisex will make it so. That doesn’t mean you can’t use it for a girl, but most people with assume a boy.

Another one who's always thought Aubrey a boys name and Audrey a girls name

Although I agree that Aubrey has a nicer softer sound than Audrey, it’s definitely a male name. It’s not unisex because you’ve decided it sounds more feminine. I’d just assume the parents were a bit stupid and hadn’t researched the name before giving it to their daughter. Sorry.

@grandplans Yes!!

And aren't there any Only Fools and Horses fans out there? I'd struggle to name a girl with Boycie's middle name!

Isn't there a female Aubrey on Parks and Recreation?

It's funny, I don't like it as a boy's name, but I like it as a girl's.

Maybe it will cross over to the other side, like Marion, Shirley, Lindsay and Tracey. They went male to female, didn't they?

Definitely a boys name.

I've only ever met one Aubrey and, in my mind, he was the archetypal Aubrey : he was in his mid to late 60s, wore a smoking jacket around his home and "used to be in theatre you know".

Only ever heard Aubrey used for a girl (Audrey too)

TossDaily - Aubrey Plaza - an amazing name! Until now I had thought she was called Audrey, which just goes to show I don't read credits properly.

A boys name but there's nothing wrong with using it for a girl but then you'll probably have this conversation every time you mention her name to some one new

Both, but more girly

It's traditionally a male name. The only Aubrey I've known is an elderly man. I've never come across it as a girls' name other than on here.

Well, according to a quick baby-name-site check, I'm wrong and it's been used for both boys and girls for centuries. Every day's a school day...

To me it's definitely a girls name but from reading the other responses it seems like it was originally male so I would say unisex but I would never name a little boy Aubrey personally!

Its considered more of a girls name nowadays but originally it was a unisex name. My grandpa’s name was “Aubury” which is a more masculine spelling.

It's a boy's name here, but is used for girls in America. Like Ashley but classier ;)

Boys name. I love it so much

Either, but instinctively picturing a girl. I think if you like it, it doesn’t matter. And those saying Audrey is the same/better... just no. I wonder if it is an “older” generation thing to think of it as exclusively male? In which case, the more people who call their daughters Aubrey, the less it will be considered a male name.

A boys name traditionally, but honestly I think I’d assume Aubrey was girl if I saw the name without a face. I know two female Aubreys in their 20s and one male Aubrey in his 30s, I think it’s become unisex.
