A sister for Eleri?

We are expecting dd2, and dd1 is called Eleri (it's a Welsh name).

Does anyone have any suggestions of what might go? I had a boys name picked out but I can't find a girls name I like, and we now know it's a girl so need to get my thinking cap on!

I think ideally we would like another Welsh name.

Annest/Anest if not Anwen?

Fflur is nice

Naberes · 12/03/2018 18:06

Cariad?

Buttercream36 · 12/03/2018 18:07

Ffion is a lovely Welsh name

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/03/2018 19:03

Olwen
Branwen
Bronwyn

Lleucu is unpronounceable if you don't speak Welsh. It's a lovely name but will cause problems.
Eira is quite close to Eyr-ra not Eye-ra,
Celyn is pronounced Kellin, and I don't see it as a girl's name.
Bronwyn is wrong. It's Bronwen.
Cariad - are you having a laugh. Would you want to call your DD Darling/Love/Charity?
Ceiridwen is wrong. It's Ceridwen.

The -wen ending is dated. Dilys (pron. Dillis) is also dated. Eirianwen is too much. Just use Eirian (or Anwen, which I'm not keen on).

Eleri is pronounced El-erry and rhymes with Kerry and Terry.

MikeUniformMike · 12/03/2018 19:42

Talar is welsh for the bit at the end of a furrow.
Seren IMO is a bit hmm as is Enfys. They are translated words now used as names.

Lowri is Welsh for Laura, and is often mispronounced as Lowry (him wot painted matchstick men).

Callwen is not good - Call is welsh for Sensible so will get jokes.

The LL will guarantee problems. Eu and Ei etc tend to cause problems and -ir names like Meinir and Einir will cause problems.

Alaw is pretty (pron AL-ow)

Blodwen is awful.

Naberes · 12/03/2018 21:21

I know a Charity actually! (and a Cariad)

MikeUniformMike · 12/03/2018 22:15

Is her surname Case?

Cariad is also sweetheart, lover boyfriend, girlfriend so it's a bit much as a name.

Izzy24 · 12/03/2018 22:31

Heledd
Arianwen
Eluned
Meredith
Llinos

MikeUniformMike · 12/03/2018 22:37

Avoid Meredith. The welsh version, Meredydd, is a boy's name, and it is pronounced Ma-RED-ith (soft th like in 'the' or 'with').

Izzy24 · 13/03/2018 00:41

No, Meredith is not a boy’s name.

And yes, of course it’s pronounced Me RED ith - that’s what makes it so lovely.Smile

MikeUniformMike · 13/03/2018 06:37

Meredydd is a boy's name. Pronounced Mer-ED-ith (soft 'th')
Meredith is a surname that has been appropriated as a girl's name.
MER-ed-ith (hard 'th').

Mrsknackered · 13/03/2018 08:21

Alys or Mali or Mabli.

Dilys is very dated!

jigsawpiece · 14/03/2018 05:19

If you like Eira how about Aneira? A bit shorter than Eirianwen

FizzyGreenWater · 15/03/2018 14:12

Mabli is good albeit a bit sheepdoggy.

I wish Milgi was a girl's name, it sounds as if it should be!

AuntLydia · 15/03/2018 14:19

Dilys is awful, isn't it the name of naughty Norman's mum in fireman Sam? It's like the kind of name people use when they want to take the mick out of Welsh people. Same with blodwen.

I've only ever heard the name Celyn used for girls. Isn't it Welsh for Holly?

I like Glain, Mirain, Siriol as more unusual girls names.

Fflur, Seren, Mali are all more mainstream and easier to say possibly.

AuntLydia · 15/03/2018 14:20

There's Eirys and Neiry too if you like the sound of Eira.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/03/2018 19:16

Hafren.

MikeUniformMike · 15/03/2018 20:40

Celyn was originally a boy's name. It is Welsh for Holly, but you can get a man called Holly too. Holly Johnson springs to mind.
Milgi would make a lovely name for a girl. Eirys is Iris but written a bit welsh. To get Iris you would write Airys phonetically but the welsh tend to soften it to Eirys. It's a bit crap.
Eirianwen makes me think of a stocky, rough, ruddy faced, not very feminine female farmer in a stripy jumper but I don't know why.
Aneira sounds like a made up feminine version of Aneirin.
God knows what Neiry is meant to be. Eiry is a name.

jigsawpiece · 15/03/2018 21:27

Isn't Milgi a greyhound?!

I don't think Aneira is made up (no more than any name is!) there are quite a few out there. It's not been made up recently in any case, it's been around a long time.

I don't actually mind Dilys, it feels like one of those old fashioned names that are coming round again (like Florence, Lily, Olive etc). Not Blodwen, though!

Blushingm · 15/03/2018 22:08

My sister is Meredith - she's def a girl! It's an acceptable girls name

In this area Eleri is pronounced El - air - ri rather than rhyming with celery

Enfys and Heulwen are both pretty - rainbow & sunshine. I know if a 93 year old Enfys so I wouldn't class it as a modern made up name!

MikeUniformMike · 15/03/2018 23:02

Meredith is acceptable as a girl's name but Meredydd/Maredydd wouldn't be.

Yes, somebody here knows somebody aged nearly 100 called Lexi-Mae and Jaxon so they are classic names.

Bouncingbelle · 15/03/2018 23:21

Ethni

appleschnapps · 15/03/2018 23:24

Cerys
