So having decided on Tasmin, our dd hugged my tummy today and said "My Darla". Meant darling of course but after a quick Google I found it's a real old English name. DH and I jokingly said dd's named her sister but it's really grown on both of us and it's a cute story to tell her when she's older. We don't discuss names with others IRL so what do you think of Darla? DD is Nancy and I really like the way they sound together...I think!

Hmmm. It will just get mistaken for Carla I think?

Buntysoven · 28/02/2018 22:38

Thank you everyone.... amazed at the huge support for Darla! We're going with it 😁 The Buffy and Nemo connections don't bother us...most names including mine have someone less than perfect also called that. Really excited now. 17 days to due date 🤗

I think of Darla in buffy (who is a mentally deranged vampire!) but I think that’s a cult/minority thing and if I met a real person with the name I’m sure it would quickly push that from my mind!

Drusilla is the mentally deranged vampire. Darla is perfectly compos mentis, pretty kick ass and achieves her redemption in the end. Not really any negative connotations there.

The name itself is Anglo Saxon in origin - it means 'Dear one' and first became popular in the 1700s (causing a bit of a rewrite for Joss Whedon as Darla would have been born in the late 1500s. Darla wasn't her real name -The Master gave it to her. )

I like it.

Another here who generally hates all the names on the baby name threads...

But I like Darla!

mathanxiety · 01/03/2018 00:34

It's very sweet. Goes well with Nancy.

I had a Haitian neighbour once named Darly - 'Darla' suddenly reminded me of her.

(Glad you dodged Tasmin too. Tamsin is much nicer imo).

My grandmother had a friend named Darla, and she was an absolutely lovely woman. She was so kind and sweet to me when I was a child. I LOVE the name! Congratulations!

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/03/2018 10:32

Really like Darla! What a clever DD Nancy is

harrietm87 · 01/03/2018 14:17

I think it's lovely and super cute story! Another little rascals fan here!

MikeUniformMike · 01/03/2018 18:22

Tasmin is better.

Junijuli · 01/03/2018 18:23

No disrespect, but I usually think wtf when people post names like the above PP on MN ^^

Hilarious. But you think a name like Darla is fine?GrinHmm

LiviaAD · 02/03/2018 14:16

Great name and such a wonderful origin story to tell!

Mummyontherun86 · 02/03/2018 19:32

Icantreachtheprezels - you’re right! Whoops. Ignore my comment then. Got completely the wrong character Blush

Dontrocktheboat · 02/03/2018 21:13

Balloonslayer - I remember the alien child called Darla story too. I think it was in Mandy comic. The older sister was awake and saw the light from the aliens' spaceship in the garden (eighties tastic) and in the morning there was a little sister that only she knew had not been there the day before (it was quite a good story actually). Not read entire thread so possibly others remember too.

I quite like the name Darla actually. And Tamsin but not so much Tasmin.

alphajuliet123 · 18/03/2018 01:46

I think we’re just past your due date @Buntysoven, has Darla arrived?

Octave777 · 18/03/2018 03:36

Glad you've decided on it op. I've never heard the name before and really like it.
