So having decided on Tasmin, our dd hugged my tummy today and said "My Darla". Meant darling of course but after a quick Google I found it's a real old English name. DH and I jokingly said dd's named her sister but it's really grown on both of us and it's a cute story to tell her when she's older. We don't discuss names with others IRL so what do you think of Darla? DD is Nancy and I really like the way they sound together...I think!

Beautiful name

BeverlyHillsBillie · 28/02/2018 08:31

Darla is cute. It sounds very American 50's Retro to me and it goes great with Nancy.

There is a lovely, hilarious film called Little Rascals with a little girl character called Darla in it. You should watch it with Nancy. Smile

I prefer Tamsin a million times more than Tasmin, which I don't think is a proper name, more like someone's accidental mangling of Tamsin. Sorry. Blush

Joinourclub · 28/02/2018 08:31

Darla much nicer than Tasmin. I do like Tamsin though , or Jasmine.

SteelyPip · 28/02/2018 08:32

Yes! Darla is a lovely name and the story's brilliant.

Catinthebath · 28/02/2018 08:34

I like it. Tasmin/Tamsin I often misread, same with Kirsten/Kristen

Rhodes2015again · 28/02/2018 08:36

Lovely!

Loonoon · 28/02/2018 08:36

It's a lovely name and a lovely story. And the Buffy connection is good too. (We bought a new build house and the design was called the `Kendra, no idea why. I'm not saying that's why we chose it but it made our Buffy mad children very happy).

rothbury · 28/02/2018 08:36

OW was called Darla..................Grin

BeverlyHillsBillie · 28/02/2018 08:37

Darla and Alfalfa, one of the greatest love stories in cinematic history.

Darla is Buffy to me too. I don’t dislike it, and I think it’s cute with Nancy, but I really like a PP’s suggestion of Dahlia instead.

Fekko · 28/02/2018 08:41

Genius I think. It’s a very sweet name. Any middle names in mind?

BewareOfDragons · 28/02/2018 08:44

'Tamsin' is nicer than 'Tasmin' ... makes me think of the Tasmanian Devil.

Darla is lovely. I remember the little Darla from the Little Rascals.

Starryskiesinthesky · 28/02/2018 08:44

I think they sound together but most of their lives they won't be a twosome and Darla on its own is less good. Tamsin Darla?

whoatemytwix · 28/02/2018 08:48

Lovely! I much prefer it to Tasmin x

DaisyUnPhasey · 28/02/2018 08:49

One of the few on here that I am happy to say I like!

Clearly you did not read the thread; most people love it...

BalloonSlayer · 28/02/2018 08:52

I remember from childhood a comic strip (it might have been in Bunty! Grin ) called Little Stranger.

To cut a long story short, aliens had planted one of their own in a family and the only person who didn't think the kid had always been there was the older sister. The family just assumed she was jealous. Everyone adored the child, who had blonde curls and a syrupy sweet disposition, except when she looked at the heroine, when she resembled Chucky. I wonder if David Icke ever read it? Anyway, of course her name was Darla. Clearly chosen because it's a clunkingly obvious version of "darling" and to emphasise the fakeness of the con being attempted by the aliens.

So it's not that I would think your DD was an alien Grin but I would see the name Darla as someone trying VERY hard to make people think their child is a Darling, roll my eyes and expect her to be a nightmare.

blueskyinmarch · 28/02/2018 08:53

I usually hate the names suggested on MN but i love Darla. And it goes well with Nancy.

StarkintheSouth · 28/02/2018 08:54

Genius. The story is lovely but also Buffy had a character called Darla. Definitely go with that name and congrats x

SleepingStandingUp · 28/02/2018 08:56

They go well together, and its a cute name

BookHelpPlease · 28/02/2018 08:57

I would assume you are Buffy fans if i heard her name, but nowt wrong with that!

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 28/02/2018 08:58

Name genius.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 28/02/2018 08:59

I am usually SO conventional with names but I think Darla is really pretty. She would probably get called Darling for a nickname, which is nice and I think it’s always nice when names have a story to go with them.

CremeDeSudo · 28/02/2018 09:03

I love this Smile Wish DS came up with someting good for his sister instead of 'poo poo bum' Grin

KateAdiesEarrings · 28/02/2018 09:05

It's a very cute name but also works for an adult. Well done little Nancy Smile

cakecakecheese · 28/02/2018 09:07

I think it would be lovely for your daughter to have named her sister. My friend's daughter decided she didn't like the name her parents had picked out for her brother that they were expecting so she chose a new name which they ended up preferring and going with.

I misread at first and thought it was Daria which was an awesome programme in the late 90's, but Darla was in Buffy so that's cool too. As for it being too close to darling, how many kids are called Grace and turn out to have absolutely none? Grin
