Girls name help?

Hi all,

DH and I are expecting () and we have a boys name picked out, but we're struggling for girls. DH is quite easygoing but I'm quite picky. So far we like the following:

• Verity
• Eden
• Sylvie
• Xanthe
• Margot (DH's fav)
• Aurelie/Aurelia (my fav)

Which do you like best?? Any other suggestions to throw in the mix? Any middle name suggestions...?

Floral names are ruled out as our surname is Rose.

Only ones I'm not keen on from your list are Sylvie and Xanthe.

Verity is my favourite girl's name!

I like Verity too.

Verity is one of my favourites but DH thinks it's a bit "hard" sounding for a little girl? (I think he's on glue ) so is that a resounding no to his opinion? I thought that was one of the best ones we liked to suit from baby to adult but DH has put doubts in my mind.

Is Aurelia better than Aurelie? Would we have a complete nightmare explaining how pronounce it/spell it to our families?

Not at all hard sounding! I do think it is a strong name though (nothing wrong with that for a little girl), and I agree it transitions well from baby/child to adult. So yes your DH is wrong

Verity also goes well with your surname so that the whole name isn't so 'pretty', which I think Aurelia or Aurelie could be. I think I probably prefer Aurelie as it's a bit less frilly, especially with surname.

I love Sylvie and second Margot.

Really dislike Verity, the others are nice.

@JollyGiraffe I prefer Aurelie out of that and Aurelia too. I hadn't thought of it being a bit frilly with our surname but I see what you mean.

This whole naming a child thing is much harder than I'd ever anticipated! I know I shouldn't but I feel so conscious of our family and friends' opinions when we do eventually name him/her.

@Mrsknackered Thank you I do feel quite lucky to have married into a pretty surname, it sounds much nicer with baby names than my maiden name

From your list I love the sound of Clementine but can't get past the fruit connotation!

@missyB1 I quite like Laurel but one of my best friends is called Lauren!

I like Verity and Margot. sorry but I think Aurelia and Aurelie are a bit try-hard (for lack of a better description).

@loobybear try hard as in a bit poncey or like they're made up? Genuinely curious as this is why I wanted to do this thread, to gauge opinions from lots of people with different tastes.

I think I'm quite drawn to frilly (perhaps try hard) names. Before we got married and even thought of having a baby I liked Aurora, but Aurora Rose is far too many Rs

happy I was going to suggest Aurora as also one of my favourites! But not sure if ever use it as it is definitely frilly and a bit too fairytale maybe.

I also like Camilla and Violet. But unfortunately last one is floral!

@JollyGiraffe Violet is another one I love but can't use!

DM likes Autumn for a girl but Autumn Rose sounds like an air freshener

Sylvie is the one for me, especially with your surname.
I like Xanthe and Margot in their own right but not so much with the surname Rose. Sylvie Rose is sweet (but not too sweet) whereas I see Xanthe and Margot as having a more dramatic quality that, coupled with Rose, could sound almost like stage names.

I know it’s really popular on mn but I really can’t ever imagine naming a child Margot

How about Miranda, Antigone or Emmeline?

Eden is nice but Eden Rose is a type of climbing plant! Margot is lovely

My youngest is a Xanthe - I love it; haven't met any others and think it's both sweet but fairly sophisticated at the same time.

I agree that Xanthe Rose sounds like a stage name but, unlike a PP, I see that as a good thing!

Also really love Verity and Eden. Not keen on the others.

I think Xanthe Verity Rose or Verity Eden Rose would both be gorgeous.

@manicinsomniac I don't mind it sounding like a stage name either my name is very plain and if I have a DD I'd like her to have a name that stands out.

Now I may need to run off and suggest Ariadne and Calista to DH - thank you!

Eden and Slyvie are nice.

Don’t like Verity- sounds cold and hard

happylantern poncy although I don't really like describing it as that. I think the same about Aurora too. They are lovely names and if I met an Italian child called Aurelia or Aurora or a French child called Aurelie I would maybe think they were lovely names but I often think it sounds a bit try hard (as in trying to be fancy) when I hear names like that on children who aren't.
