Girls name help?

Hi all,

DH and I are expecting (Grin) and we have a boys name picked out, but we're struggling for girls. DH is quite easygoing but I'm quite picky. So far we like the following:

  • Verity
  • Eden
  • Sylvie
  • Xanthe
  • Margot (DH's fav)
  • Aurelie/Aurelia (my fav)

Which do you like best?? Any other suggestions to throw in the mix? Any middle name suggestions...?

Floral names are ruled out as our surname is Rose.

Verity- hate it, dull.
Xanthe- pretentious.
Aurelie/Aurelia- also pretentious and difficult to pronouce. Doesn't sound nice.
Sylvie- okay, but sounds like it should be 'Sylvia'.
Eden- okay, but very popular.
Margot- my personal favourite, but would have to be pronounced with a silent t.

SnowyPolarBear · 03/12/2017 23:10

Just read your comment about how your DH likes Autumn.

I love Autumn and Margot.

I think your DH needs to come up with some more namesWink

happylantern · 03/12/2017 23:10

Wow there really isn't a consensus on this thread is there! Shock

I can't believe how easily we picked a boys name in comparison.

@SnowyPolarBear it's DM that likes Autumn. Autumn is lovely but just not with our surname!

DH came up with Steve for a boy (Hmm) so don't give him too much credit as chief baby namer Grin

Oops sorry OP. SteveGrin

Still love Margot.

chocdog · 03/12/2017 23:24

Love Verity.

LarkDescending · 03/12/2017 23:57

I love Sylvie from your list.

Otherwise - for some reason Lucinda popped into my head.

ClandestineAdulation · 04/12/2017 00:01

Love Aurelia and would choose that over Aurelie because of the connotations with incorrect pronunciation!

loobybear · 04/12/2017 00:12

Just saw snowybear's post and realised pretentious was the word I was looking for rather than poncy!

I think Autumn is lovely and really unusual, would be particularly beautiful if there was any chance of her having red or auburn hair.

MadameJosephine · 04/12/2017 07:26

@happylantern that’s how I would pronounce it An-tig-o-nee. I love it but wasn’t brave enough to use it, we don’t really live in the right postcode ifkwim. Absolutely love Tiggy as a nn too

ChocolateCrunch · 04/12/2017 07:35

From your list, I'd chose Margot, but I quite like all of the others apart from Verity, sorry.

happylantern · 04/12/2017 08:09

Can't believe how mixed the responses are! Thank you to everybody that has contributed.

As much as I like Autumn, I could not name a daughter Autumn Rose without always thinking it sounded like a candle!

Lily2007 · 04/12/2017 08:25

I like Aurelie and Sylvie best out of those, also don't like hard sounding names. I don't like them ending with a for that reason.

Margot always reminds me of maggot and the 70s sitcom.

I think the two I like are both French - do you have a connection to France or just like these names? I have a French DH so I would go for something like Aurelie Elise Rose. Out of the others I would probably go for Verity after these but does sound quite posh.

Trampire · 04/12/2017 08:32

I really like Verity and Margot.

I think Verity Rose sounds lovely. I might be swayed because I'm reading a Poldark at the moment Grin. The character of Verity though is kind, wise and loyal. It's a classic name very under-used.

happylantern · 04/12/2017 08:35

@Lily2007 no connection to France other than liking the sound of the names!

IVflytrap · 04/12/2017 08:36

I like Sylvie the best, and think it goes well with your surname. Xanthe isn't bad, either. Don't like Margot Rose together because of the repeating "Oh" sound in the last two syllables of the full name. It's a bit much when said aloud, in my opinion. But I am pretty nitpicky about how names sound together, for what it's worth. Most people wouldn't notice/care.

happylantern · 04/12/2017 08:45

@IVflytrap I thought the same about the "oh" sound but DH thought I was being daft. I just don't feel strongly about Margot, I like it, but I don't think I love it.

HuskyMcClusky · 04/12/2017 08:49

I don’t like Verity at all.

Also dislike Margot, and Margot Rose (two long ‘o’ sounds) is awful.

Eden Rose
Aurelie Rose

Both v pretty.

HuskyMcClusky · 04/12/2017 08:50

Margot always reminds me of maggot and the 70s sitcom.

Me too! I know it’s having a comeback, but I really dislike Margot.

SparkleMotion82 · 04/12/2017 14:58

I think Aurelie is lovely but I have always thought in English people might tease her because it sounds a bit like ‘orally’?! I may be overthinking it! For that reason I’d go for Aurelia...although I do prefer Aurora....

Lily2007 · 04/12/2017 15:05

Sparkle I dread to think what you are thinking about for Aurelie Rose then.

happylantern · 04/12/2017 18:18

@SparkleMotion82 I don't really think it sounds anything like orally, it's more like a "ray" sound in the middle in an English accent.

DH has been put off Margot quite a bit now that several people mentioned Maggot Grin I like Eden but I've gone off it a bit now I've heard that Eden Rose is a plant!

I think the front runners are Aurelie and Verity now. Middle name suggestions anyone??

OP posts:
happylantern · 04/12/2017 18:20

@SparkleMotion82 forgot to mention, I love Aurora but it's just too many R sounds with our surname Sad I saw on MN once that somebody had named her DD Aurora with Rory as a nickname and loved it, but I can't have Rory Rose! Sad

OP posts:
DueNov · 04/12/2017 18:23

I like verity the best.

I have a Rosanna 😊

JollyGiraffe · 04/12/2017 18:24

How are you pronouncing Aurelie OP?

Oh-rah-li? Or Oh-ray-lie? I believe it should be pronounced in the first way, ie. differently to Aurelia (Oh-ray-lee-ah)
